Book Healers on the Colonial Market

Download or read book Healers on the Colonial Market written by Liesbeth Hesselink and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Healers on the Colonial Market is one of the few studies on the Dutch East Indies from a postcolonial perspective. It provides an enthralling addition to research on both the history of the Dutch East Indies and the history of colonial medicine. This book will be of interest to historians, historians of science and medicine, and anthropologists. How successful were the two medical training programmes established in Jakarta by the colonial government in 1851? One was a medical school for Javanese boys, and the other a school for midwives for Javanese girls, and the graduates were supposed to replace native healers, the dukun. However, the indigenous population was not prepared to use the services of these doctors and midwives. Native doctors did in fact prove useful as vaccinators and assistant doctors, but the school for midwives was closed in 1875. Even though there were many horror stories of mistakes made during dukun-assisted deliveries, the school was not reopened, and instead a handful of girls received practical training from European physicians. Under the Ethical Policy there was more attention for the welfare of the indigenous population and the need for doctors increased. More native boys received medical training and went to work as general practitioners. Nevertheless, not everybody accepted these native doctors as the colleagues of European physicians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study compares the policies and attitudes toward the health consequences of World War II in eleven European countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, East Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, and West Germany. It shows the remarkably asynchronous development in these countries of health care financing and treatment for war survivors, and of the patients’ perception of their own health. Using an innovative and multidisciplinary approach, Withuis and Mooij analyze postwar health care in the context of the European political climate at that time.

Book The Entolomataceae of Tasmania

    Book Details:
  • Author : machiel noordeloos
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-08-27
  • ISBN : 9400746792

Download or read book The Entolomataceae of Tasmania written by machiel noordeloos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-27 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of 14 years of collecting Entolomataceae in the native forests of Tasmania, Australia. Although initially involving only the Tasmanian residents Genevieve Gates and David Ratkowsky, who made twice- or thrice-weekly forays into the forests throughout the year, the project was subsequently joined by agaric specialist Machiel Noordeloos from the Netherlands, and by fungi photographer Michael Pilkington from the United Kingdom. The international character of the project is further evidenced by the earlier contributions of American mycologist Tim Baroni to the Tasmanian Rhodocybe species which form the basis of the chapter on the now-expanded concept of Clitopilus, and a visit of several months in 2010 by Brazilian Ph.D. candidate Fernanda Karstedt, who tested the keys to the Entoloma species. Consequently, several thousand well-annotated collections were found during this inventory and form the basis of this monographic treatment of the Entoloma and Clitopilus of Tasmania. The resulting 90 Entoloma species and 10 Clitopilus species are well documented with standardized descriptions, line drawings of fruit bodies and diagnostic microscopic characters, and, when available, with colour photographs. Thanks to the intensive search, it was possible to illustrate most species in colour. Dichotomous keys facilitate identification of the species. The species concept used is morphologically based; in several cases, however, identification to species level is supported by molecular data.

Book Divided Dreamworlds

Download or read book Divided Dreamworlds written by Peter Romijn and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its unique focus on how culture contributed to the blurring of ideological boundaries between the East and the West, this important volume offers fascinating insights into the tensions, rivalries and occasional cooperation between the two blocs. Encompassing developments in both the arts and sciences, the authors analyze focal points, aesthetic preferences and cultural phenomena through topics as wide-ranging as the East- and West German interior design; the Soviet stance on genetics; US cultural diplomacy during and after the Cold War; and the role of popular music as a universal cultural ambassador. Well positioned at the cutting edge of Cold War studies, this important work illuminates some of the striking paradoxes involved in the production and reception of culture in East and West.

Book In the Name of Science

Download or read book In the Name of Science written by Martijn Eickhoff and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume describes and analyses the highly successful career of the Dutch physicist and Nobel prize winner P.J.W. Debye (1884- 1966) in the Third Reich. The book sketches the life of a man who lived for science, but at the same time maintained close contacts with influential officials, industrialists and sometimes even politicians. In this context Debye declined to respond in public to the treatment of Jews in society in general and in science in particular, even after his migration to the United States in 1940. By combining a biographical perspective with network analysis and research on contemporary moral assessments, this book sheds new and disturbing light on Debyes socio-political worldview and his involvement in the Aryanization of German science.
