Book The Thousand Generation Covenant Dutch Reformed Covenant Theology and Group Identity in Colonial South Africa 1652 1814

Download or read book The Thousand Generation Covenant Dutch Reformed Covenant Theology and Group Identity in Colonial South Africa 1652 1814 written by Gerstner and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-12-06 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents the religious factor in the development of a separatistic group identity among the forebears of the Afrikaners during the Dutch colonial period of South African history. Dutch Reformed covenant theology and baptism practice rooted in the thousand generation covenant theory helped to shape this self-understanding. It traces the basic developments of covenant theology in the Netherlands during the period and demonstrates how these concepts were conveyed to colonial South Africa. The dominant strain of covenantal thought treated the entire community as redeemed and called to be separate. It was presented through a variety of means through which virtually every colonist was exposed. This study offers a balanced historical approach to the role of theological concepts in the colonial roots of Afrikaner group identity. It answers traditional scholarship in the field which either directly identify the concepts behind the development of apartheid with Calvinist theology or, more recently, deny that the Reformed faith had any role in the development of apartheid ideology until the twentieth century.

Book Comparative Anatomy of the Gastrointestinal Tract in Eutheria II

Download or read book Comparative Anatomy of the Gastrointestinal Tract in Eutheria II written by Peter Langer and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 804 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of the series Handbook of Zoology deals with the anatomy of the gastrointestinal digestive tract – stomach, small intestine, caecum and colon – in all eutherian orders and suborders. It presents compilations of anatomical studies, as well as an extensive list of references, which makes widely dispersed literature accessible. Introductory sections to orders and suborders give notice to biology, taxonomy, biogeography and food of the respective taxon. It is a characteristic of this book that different sections of the post-oesophageal tract are discussed separately from each other. Informations on form and function of organs of digestion in eutherians are discussed under comparative-anatomical aspects. The variability and diversity of anatomical structures represents the basis of functional differentiations.

Book Preaching in the Last Days

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rodney L. Petersen
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 1993-06-24
  • ISBN : 0195360834
  • Pages : 333 pages

Download or read book Preaching in the Last Days written by Rodney L. Petersen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1993-06-24 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visionary strength was given to the piety, polity, and political activity of Protestantism in its formative periods through the way in which the Apocalypse was read. By identifying with the text depicting two witnesses, or prophets, who preach at the end of history, are slain by the beast from the abyss (understood to be Antichrist), and rise again victoriously, representatives of the Protestant movement found a measure of self-identity. This text, Revelation 11:3-13, became the lens through which many envisioned the movement of history from the first advent of Christ to his promised return. It was used by earlier reform movements, but it lent special definition to the work of Protestant ministers through the nineteenth century, suggesting different approaches to social organization. Preaching in the Last Days is a study in the history of how the Apocalypse was read. It is also an examination of how social groups are formed through ideas occasioned by texts. It offers an account of the interplay between religious and social history during the time of the development of Protestantism. Petersen's study provides a fascinating look at the theological significance of how we read biblical texts and the insights this offers on the development of culture, the Christian movement, and its churches. The book is especially important for understanding the assumptions behind the ways in which the book of Revelation is being read and used in our own day.
