Download or read book A Critical Survey of Studies on Malay and Bahasa Indonesia written by A. Teeuw and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book I have aimed at completeness in the sense that all publications known to me, which are wholly or partly devoted to Malay and Bahasa Indonesia (B.I.), or are important for the study of these languages, have been included. Popular publications in non-professional periodicals have been included only exceptionally. All the publications mentioned in the text are incorporated in the Bibliography (p. 91-157). The countless articles in four post-war, semi-professional periodicals in :'1alaya and Indonesia, Dewan Bahasa, Pembina Bahasa Indonesia. 11:1 edan Bahasa, Bahasa dan Budaja, are not mentioned separately in the Bibliography, but sections 33 to 36 contain a survey, as complete and systematic as possible, of the contents of these periodicals in so far as they pertain to the Malay language; nor have I discussed in the text or incorporated in the Bibliography several hundreds of titles of practical textbooks or school-books of Malay or B.I. which are of no importance to the scientific study of these language. These titles have been entered in a separate Appendix (p. 158--171). The fact that completeness was aimed at certainly does not mean that it has been achieved. Especially various recent writings from Indonesia and Malaya may have escaped my attention. Experience has also proved that publications on Malay sometimes appear in the most unexpected places. The qualification above: "publications ... devoted to ... , or impor tant for the study of" Malay and B.I. has been taken in a wide sense.

Download or read book Population Trends in Indonesia written by Widjojo Nitisastro and published by Equinox Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive demographic study of Indonesia, this book makes an important contribution to the understanding of the political and economic problems - both past and present - of the world's fourth most populous country. It demonstrates that the period 1970 to 1980 will be particularly crucial for Indonesia and will require careful social and economic planning. The author, who is acknowledged to be Indonesia's foremost economist demographer, amasses and corrects population estimates made during the era of Dutch rule, including material from as early as 1775. He discusses the census of 1930 and the impact of events of the 1940's - World War II, the Japanese occupation, and the Indonesian revolution - on population trends. He points out, for example, that low birth and high mortality rates during the subsequent period, suggest that the mean age of Indonesia's working age population is undergoing a radical rejuvenation. Using the census of 1961 as a base, Mr. Widjojo projects Indonesia's population to 1991, forecasting the probable growth rates of the total population and of its various components. He shows how the population breaks down into extremely uneven age groups and suggests the serious consequences of this situation. He emphasizes that the dramatic increases in the number of 15-to-24-year-olds that occurred in the population during the second half of the 1960's and that are projected for the 1970's make careful preparation for the future imperative if crises in the labor market and in the field of education are to be dealt with successfully. Population Trends in Indonesia, now brought back to life as a member of Equinox Publishing's Classic Indonesia series, serves as a model for future research and proves invaluable to economic and social planners working throughout the developing world. Widjojo Nitisastro, former Dean of the Faculty of Economics at the University of Indonesia, was Chairman of President Suharto's Economic Team and of the National Development Planning Agency. A graduate of the University of Indonesia, Professor Widjojo received a Ph.D. degree in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley.

Download or read book Incunabula in Transit written by Lotte Hellinga and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost half a million books printed in the fifteenth century survive in collections worldwide. In Incunabula in Transit Lotte Hellinga explores how and where they were first disseminated. Propelled by the novel need to market hundreds of books, early printers formed networks with colleagues, engaged agents and traded Latin books over long distances. They adapted presentation to suit the taste of distinct readerships, local and remote. Publishing in vernacular languages required typographical innovations, as the chapter on William Caxton’s Flanders enterprise demonstrates. Eighteenth-century collectors dislodged books from institutions where they had rested since the sales drives of early printers. Erudite and entertaining, Hellinga’s evidence-based approach, linked to historical context, deepens understanding of the trade in early printed books.
Download or read book Margins for Manoeuvre in Cold War Europe written by Laurien Crump and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-28 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cold War is conventionally regarded as a superpower conflict that dominated the shape of international relations between World War II and the fall of the Berlin Wall. Smaller powers had to adapt to a role as pawns in a strategic game of the superpowers, its course beyond their control. This edited volume offers a fresh interpretation of twentieth-century smaller European powers – East–West, neutral and non-aligned – and argues that their position vis-à-vis the superpowers often provided them with an opportunity rather than merely representing a constraint. Analysing the margins for manoeuvre of these smaller powers, the volume covers a wide array of themes, ranging from cultural to economic issues, energy to diplomacy and Bulgaria to Belgium. Given its holistic and nuanced intervention in studies of the Cold War, this book will be instrumental for students of history, international relations and political science.

Download or read book Bangka Tin and Mentok Pepper written by Mary F. Somers Heidhues and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study deals with the history of Chinese settlement on Bangka, Indonesia's "tin island", from its beginnings in the early 18th century to the present. The distinctively Chinese organization of raw-material production, the importation of labourers, and the gradual formation of a Chinese community are central themes, but also of concern is the impact of these developments on the local population. Technological change and government policies, both colonial and Indonesian, add to the picture. On the one hand, the book is a contribution to Indonesian local history; on the other, it presents much material for comparison with Chinese settlements elsewhere in Southeast Asia.

Download or read book Dutch Foreign Policy written by Duco Hellema and published by Republic of Letters. This book was released on 2009 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Relations Studies Series, 6 (International Studies Library, 14) Since the publication in 1995 of the first Dutch language edition of Dutch Foreign Policy, the book has become a standard work about Dutch foreign policy. Both the first and later editions of the book have been commended for their ordered clarity. The work describes the fortunes of a power that, in spite of its limited size, was able to maintain its role as a centre of trade and colonial power up to the Second World War by exercising a policy of caution and free trade. After the war and a difficult process of de-colonialism, the Netherlands joined NATO. It became one of the founding fathers of European integration. To this day, the Netherlands is a state which plays an important role on the world's stage, actively participates in peace missions and relatively speaking, spends a great deal on foreign aid.
