This work presents a crucial overview of the first fledgling century of newspaper publishing and reading in one of the most advanced political cultures of early modern Europe. Seventy years after Folke Dahl’s Dutch Corantos first documented early Dutch newspapers, Der Weduwen offers a brand-new approach to the bibliography of the early modern periodical press. This includes, amongst others, a description of places of correspondence listed in each surviving newspaper. The bibliography is accompanied by an extensive introduction of the Dutch and Flemish press in the seventeenth century. Wilson launched a missionary emphasis still seen today in Oxford churches. What this book helps us understand is that the situation that prevailed when these men influenced their society is similar to that of today. William Grimshaw (1708-1763) Christ's College, was a friend of John Wesley who was one of the first leaders of the 18th century revival. He frequently had 1200 worshippers at his church in Haworth (most outside the building!). Even the modern day Poet Laureate, Ted Hughes, felt his influence. John Berridge (1716-1793) Clare College was influenced by Grimshaw and became known as the ?Pedlar of the Gospel' after refusing to obey his Bishop who said he should NOT be preaching to the people in the fields. Henry Venn (1725-1797) Queen's College was also a leader in the Evangelical Revival and the ?spiritual father' of the Clapham Sect of Social reformers, which included William Wilberforce's campaign against slavery. He was also the mentor to Charles Simeon* (1759-1836) Kings College, a founder of the Church Missionary Society and a key consultant for the East India Company on their choice of chaplains, one of whom was his curate. Conversely, images helped to spread indulgences, such as those attached to the Virgin in sole and the Mass of St Gregory. Images also began depicting the effects of indulgences: souls escaping Purgatory. Drawing on numerous unpublished sources, Kathryn M. Rudy demonstrates how rubrics modified behaviour and expectations around image-centred devotion. Her work is the first to analyse systematically the way that indulgences and images interacted – indeed, shaped each other – prior to the Reformation.
