Download or read book I Lay This Body Down written by Lonneke Geerlings and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2022-07-15 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rosey E. Pool (1905–71) did not live an ordinary life. She witnessed the rise of the Nazis in Berlin firsthand, tutored Anne Frank, operated in a Jewish resistance group, escaped from a Nazi transit camp, published African American poets in Europe, operated a London “salon” with her partner, witnessed independence movements in Nigeria and Senegal, and took part in the American civil rights movement. I Lay This Body Down is the first study of Pool and her remarkable transatlantic life. A translator, educator, and anthologist of African American poetry, Pool corresponded, after World War II, with Langston Hughes, W. E. B. Du Bois, Naomi Long Madgett, Owen Dodson, Gordon Heath, and others who fostered her involvement in the Black Arts Movement, both in Britain and the United States. Though Pool was often cast as an outsider—one poet was amazed that “one so removed” was interested in the Black cause—she saw herself as part of a transatlantic struggle against oppression. For Pool, the “yellow Jew stars” the Nazis forced her to wear “were our darker skins.” Rosey E. Pool’s life allows Lonneke Geerlings to explore intersections of European and American history. As a Holocaust survivor and activist fighting against segregation in the Deep South, Pool connects stories that are often studied and told in isolation. Her life helps us understand the intersecting histories of Jewish Europe and Black America, but it also allows us to see how Pool dealt with tragedy, trauma, and loss. At its core, this book is about resilience and hope. Indeed, Pool’s life illuminates the power of reinvention for dealing with both challenging personal circumstances and the traumas of global history.

Download or read book Revival Type written by Paul Shaw and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-18 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illuminating account of the design inspirations and technical transformations that have shaped the digital typefaces of the 21st century In this fascinating tour through typographic history, Paul Shaw provides a visually rich exploration of digital type revival. Many typefaces from the pre-digital past have been reinvented for use on computers and mobile devices, while other new font designs are revivals of letterforms, drawn from inscriptions, calligraphic manuals, posters, and book jackets. Revival Type deftly introduces these fonts, many of which are widely used, and engagingly tells their stories. Examples include translations of letterforms not previously used as type, direct revivals of metal and wood typefaces, and looser interpretations of older fonts. Among these are variations on classic designs by John Baskerville, Giambattista Bodoni, William Caslon, Firmin Didot, Claude Garamont, Robert Granjon, and Nicolas Jenson, as well as typefaces inspired by less familiar designers, including Richard Austin, Philippe Grandjean, and Eudald Pradell. Updates and revisions of 20th-century classics such as Palatino, Meridien, DIN, Metro, and Neue Haas Grotesk (Helvetica) are also discussed. Handsomely illustrated with annotated examples, archival material depicting classic designs, and full character sets of modern typefaces, Revival Type is an essential introduction for designers and design enthusiasts into the process of reinterpreting historical type.

Download or read book Sagitta s Books of the Nameless Love written by John Henry MacKay and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2005-07 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first complete translation of the volume of six “books” that John Henry Mackay published pseudonymously as Die Bücher der namenlosen Liebe von Sagitta in 1913. The project was begun in 1905 and soon had its own problems, as described by Mackay in his introduction, “The History of a Fight for the Nameless Love.” This—and the collection all together—is an important historical document of the beginning of the homosexual emancipation movement in Germany a century ago and of the role that boy-lovers played in it. At the same time it gives an insight into the heart and mind of an accomplished writer who knew personally the joys and pains of “the nameless love”—which Oscar Wilde called “the Love that dare not speak its name.”

Download or read book The Twilight of the Gods written by Élémir Bourges and published by . This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long out of print in English, and here offered for the first time in a restored format, The Twilight of the Gods, Élémir Bourges' acknowledged masterpiece, was originally published in March, 1884, just two months before J.-K. Huysmans' groundbreaking À rebours. Both novels at once laid the groundwork for the Decadent Movement, and presented a striking challenge to Naturalism by, instead of depicting common existence, offering case studies of exceptional, extravagant beings. In Bourges' highly aesthetic work, we follow Charles d'Este, Duke of Blankenburg, who, along with his eccentric family, is exiled to Paris, where his excessive, luxurious lifestyle and the Wagnerian fate that follows him are like a chandelier falling from the sky.
