His courtly romances fathered the Arthurian tradition and influenced countless other poets in England as well as on the continent. This journal, which still exists today, greatly influenced the development of scientific geography and cartography in Germany in the nineteenth century. Numerous articles have been published by recognized experts in this field, along with a multitude of illustrations, including maps, prints and photographs. The journal developed into an important publication, setting the standard in the history of the great expeditions and discoveries, and European colonial matters. Petermann's Maps contains a bibliography of over 3400 maps, the complete series of maps published in Petermanns Geographische Mitteilungen between the year of its foundation, 1855, to the end of the Second World War. Besides the bibliography 160 of the most attractive geographical and thematic colored maps are included in Petermann's Maps. These maps can also be viewed on the CD-ROM accompanying the book. An extensive introduction precedes the cartobibliography proper, placing Petermanns Geographische Mitteilungen in its historical context. The introduction describes the history of geography from the eighteenth century onwards, outlining the development of the study of the science of cartography in Germany. The major role the founder of the journal, Augustus Petermann (1822-1878), and the publishing house Justus Perthes in Gotha played in these developments is discussed at length. The author, Jan Smits, has been in charge of the map collection of the Royal Library at The Hague since 1979. The series The Utrecht Studies in the History of Cartography in which Petermann's Maps appears as volume III, has been prepared under the direction of the Research Program Explokart of the University of Utrecht and is aimed at both researchers and laymen with an interest in these matters.

Extracts of the 'groot-journalen' of the 'Kamer Amsterdam' are also included, providing a unique view of the total expenses of the VOC on navigation. Sailing for the East is part ten of the Utrecht Studies of the History of Cartography. Includes 600 full color images, CD-ROM with appendices.Gunter Schilder graduated from Vienna University and has worked in the Netherlands at the Utrecht University on the history of cartography since 1971. In 1981 he was appointed professor of the history of cartography, a position he continued until his retirement in 2005. Schilder has written numerous publications on the history of Dutch cartography and discoveries, and as a result has agumented the knowledge of and appreciation for Dutch cartography in its Golden AgeHans D. Kok attended the Dutch Government Civil Aviation Flying Training School and later joined KLM- Royal Dutch Airlines. His interest in navigation and maps stems from his early days of navigating across oceans and polar areas, practising the old techniques, using sextants and other specific navigational instruments. His map collection comprises maps and charts from 1560 till 1800, focusing on the sea-routes from Amsterdam to Jakarta, formerly Batavia, in the Dutch East Indies. He is currently on the Board of Editors of Caert-Thresoor in Holland, and is the Chairman of IMCoS, the International Map Collectors' Society in London.

Hollar's oeuvre includes cities and fortifications, portraits, religious subjects, politics, mythology, architecture, heraldry and numismatics, antiquarian relics, costume, maps, sports, classical literature, landscape views, 'Old Master' drawings and paintings, and natural history. His work invokes his close observation of, and engagement with, the natural world, as much as the society of his times. Unfortunately, Hollar has received less attention than many of his contemporaries. He has all too often been undervalued as being primarily a 'reproductive printmaker' - one who reproduces in print the designs of others, or simply copies paintings into print. This volume seeks to revise how Hollar has formerly been characterized, through an exploration of hitherto unexamined drawings, as well as the more innovative qualities of his printmaking. It includes new research on Hollar's biography and his patrons, fresh perspectives on Hollar's portraits and urban scenes, and insights into Hollar's forays into the natural world. Partly the outcome of a 2010 symposium held at the Thomas Fisher Rare Books Library at the University of Toronto (repository of third largest collection of Hollar prints), this book comprises contributions from nine international print scholars, from Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, Germany, England, and The Netherlands. Their work on Hollar reaffirms his importance not only to the history of printmaking, but also to the art, science and culture of his times.
