Book Politics and Cultures of Liberation

Download or read book Politics and Cultures of Liberation written by Frank Mehring and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-05-29 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Politics and Cultures of Liberation: Media, Memory, and Projections of Democracy focuses on mapping, analyzing, and evaluating memories, rituals, and artistic responses to the theme of “liberation.” How is the national framed within a dynamic system of intercultural contact zones highlighting often competing agendas of remembrance? How does the production, (re)mediation, and framing of narratives within different social, territorial, and political environments determine the cultural memory of liberation? The articles compiled in this volume seek to provide new interdisciplinary and intercultural perspectives on the politics and cultures of liberation by examining commemorative practices, artistic responses, and audio-visual media that lend themselves for transnational exploration. They offer a wide range of diverse intercultural perspectives on media, memory, liberation, (self)Americanization, and conceptualizations of democracy from the war years, through the Cold War era to the 21st century.

Book Imagining Global Amsterdam

Download or read book Imagining Global Amsterdam written by Marco de Waard and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Shaping the Netherlandish Canon

Download or read book Shaping the Netherlandish Canon written by Walter S. Melion and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A treatise on Dutch art on par with Vasari's critical history of Italian art, Karel van Mander's Schilder-Boeck (or Book on Picturing) has long been recognized for its critical and historical influence--and yet, until now, no comprehensive account of the book's conception, aims, and impact has been available. In this in-depth analysis of the content and context of Van Mander's work, Walter S. Melion reveals the Schilder-Boeck's central importance to an understanding of northern Renaissance and Baroque art. By interpreting the terminology employed in the Schilder-Boeck, Melion establishes the text's relationship to past and contemporary art theory. Van Mander is seen here developing his critical categories and then applying them to Ancient, Italian, and Netherlandish artists in order to mark changes within a culture and to characterize excellence for each region. Thus Melion demonstrates how Van Mander revised both the structure and critical language of Vasari's Lives to refute the Italian's claims for the superiority of the Tuscan style, and to clarify northern artistic traditions and the concerns of Netherlandish artists. A much needed corrective to the view that Dutch art of the period was lacking in theory, Melion's work offers a compelling account of a sixteenth- and seventeenth-century theoretical and critical perspective and shows how this perspective suggests a rereading of northern art.

Download or read book Going Dutch written by Joyce Diane Goodfriend and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume investigates the place of Dutch history and Dutch-derived culture in America over the last four centuries. It considers how the Dutch have fared in America, and it explores how American conceptions of Dutchness have developed, from Henry Hudson's historic voyage to Manhattan in 1609 through the rise of Dutch design at the turn of the twenty-first century. Essays probe a rich array of topics: Dutch themes in American arts and letters; the place of Dutch paintings in American collections; shifting American interests in Dutch art, literature, and architecture; the experience of Dutch immigrants in America; and the Dutch Reformed Church in America. "Going Dutch" presents a much needed overview of the Dutch-American experience from its beginnings to the present. Contributors include: Julie Berger Hochstrasser, Willem Frijhoff, Joyce D. Goodfriend, Hans Krabbendam, Joseph Manca, Nancy T. Minty, Mark A. Peterson, Christopher Pierce, Judith Richardson, Louisa Wood Ruby, Benjamin Schmidt, Robert Schoone-Jongen, Annette Stott, Tity de Vries, and Dennis P. Weller.

Book excerpt: "In recent years, the Marshall Plan has been invoked on numerous occasions as a solution for problems domestic and foreign. This study aims to establish the relevance for contemporary postwar reconstruction projects of an experimental foreign policy conceived and executed back in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The monograph clarifies why and how the Marshall Plan was adopted, what its essential features were, and why it succeeded in western Europe, concluding that it had important and mutually reinforcing aspects-- political, psychological, and economics"--Page vii.

Book Dutch Classicism in Seventeenth century Painting

Download or read book Dutch Classicism in Seventeenth century Painting written by Albert Blankert (kunsthistoricus.) and published by Nai010 Publishers. This book was released on 1999 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this illustrated catalogue, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and the Städelsch Kunstistitut present the other face of the Golden Age - the painters of Dutch classicism. Inspired by the art of classical Antiquity and that of the Italian High Renaissance, they developed an austere and refined style. Their paintings depicting biblical and mythological scenes presented the court, the regents and the intelligentsia in the seventeenth century with an alternative to so-called Dutch Realism. In this publication, Dutch classicism is viewed from all sides.
