Book The Soundscape of Modernity

Download or read book The Soundscape of Modernity written by Emily Thompson and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2004-09-17 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vibrant history of acoustical technology and aural culture in early-twentieth-century America. In this history of aural culture in early-twentieth-century America, Emily Thompson charts dramatic transformations in what people heard and how they listened. What they heard was a new kind of sound that was the product of modern technology. They listened as newly critical consumers of aural commodities. By examining the technologies that produced this sound, as well as the culture that enthusiastically consumed it, Thompson recovers a lost dimension of the Machine Age and deepens our understanding of the experience of change that characterized the era. Reverberation equations, sound meters, microphones, and acoustical tiles were deployed in places as varied as Boston's Symphony Hall, New York's office skyscrapers, and the soundstages of Hollywood. The control provided by these technologies, however, was applied in ways that denied the particularity of place, and the diverse spaces of modern America began to sound alike as a universal new sound predominated. Although this sound—clear, direct, efficient, and nonreverberant—had little to say about the physical spaces in which it was produced, it speaks volumes about the culture that created it. By listening to it, Thompson constructs a compelling new account of the experience of modernity in America.

This important and beautiful publication brings together for the first time nearly all of the sixty drawings attributed to this leading draftsman of the 16th century. Each drawing is illustrated in color, discussed in detail, and shown with many comparative photographs. Bronzino's technical virtuosity as a draftsman and his mastery of anatomy and perspective are vividly apparent in each stroke of the chalk, pen, or brush. The younger generations of Florentine artists particularly admired Bronzino for his technical virtuosity as a painter, and Giorgio Vasari praised him for his powers as a disegnatore (designer and draftsman).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the French 'causer', to talk informally, Causeries details a series of encounters between British artist Alexandre Singh and various writers, scientists and philosophers on such wide-ranging topics as Hindu cosmogony, South Park, and scatology.Causeries presents a selection of 29 public conversations conducted by Singh during his residency at Witte de With, Rotterdam in preparation for his play, The Humans. This young, New York-based Englishman's slippery yarns seem the perfect medium for the Wiki age, weaving fact and fiction, textbook lore, mythologies and flights of fantasy. But Singh doesn't want us to forget that stories have always been shifty. His long talks, done from memory, hark back to the ancient Homeric tradition where poets would recount epics, passing the tales - which would be reshaped by each new teller's elisions and embellishments - from generation to generation. -- Skye Sherwin (The Guardian)Singh has exhibited in museums around the world including: Palais de Tokyo, Paris; Art Basel; Sculpture Centre, New York; Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, Berlin; Guggenheim Museum, New York; Hayward Gallery, London; and 12th Biennale de Lyon.Publication in conjunction with the past program, The Humans at Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam, June 2012 - January 2013 and Causeries, Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art, April 2012 - March 2013.
