Book Governance in Northern Ontario Economic Development and Policy Making

Download or read book Governance in Northern Ontario Economic Development and Policy Making written by Charles Conteh and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes economic development policy governance in northern Ontario over the past thirty years, with the goal of making practical policy recommendations for present and future government engagement with the region. It brings together scholars from several disciplines to address the policy and management challenges in various sectors of northern Ontario's economy, including the mining, pulp and paper, and tourism industries, and both small- and medium-sized businesses. Governance in Northern Ontario assesses the role of the provincial government and its economic policy intervention in the region's economic development. The contributors evaluate the relationship between the provincial and local governments and the business sector, and also looser structures of policy networks, such as those of First Nations and other interested community groups. Focusing on the nature of partnerships between governments and societal interests, Governance in Northern Ontario makes a significant contribution to the theories and practice of public policy governance in socioeconomically disadvantaged regions.

Book Rethinking the Politics of Labour in Canada 2nd ed

Download or read book Rethinking the Politics of Labour in Canada 2nd ed written by Stephanie Ross and published by Fernwood Publishing. This book was released on 2021-10-21T00:00:00Z with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the need to re-establish the labour movement’s political capacity to exert collective power in ways that foster greater opportunity and equality for working-class people has taken on a greater sense of urgency. Understanding the strategic political possibilities and challenges facing the Canadian labour movement at this important moment in history is the central concern of this second edition of Rethinking the Politics of Labour in Canada. With new and revised essays by established and emerging scholars from a wide range of disciplines, this edited collection assesses the past, present and uncertain future of Canadian labour politics in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Bringing together the traditional electoral-based aspects of labour politics with analyses of newer and rediscovered forms of working-class organization and social movement-influenced strategies, which have become increasingly important in the Canadian labour movement, this book seeks to take stock of these new forms of labour politics, understand their emergence and assess their potential impact on the future of labour in Canada.

Book The Politics of Industrial Restructuring

Download or read book The Politics of Industrial Restructuring written by Rianne Mahon and published by . This book was released on 1984-12 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1960s the Waffle raised the spectre of the 'deindustrialization' of the Canadian economy -- a prospect which was linked to the power of foreign-controlled subsidiaries. Professor Mahon argues here that the threat of deindustrialization actually first appeared in a sector then dominated by Canadian capital -- textiles. Moreover, Mahon suggests that the Canadian state cannot act in the narrow interests of dominant capitals. Rather, in order to secure their political interests, it will have to take measures to restore Canada's industrial base. Its choice from among the main alternative industrial strategies -- continental rationalization, technological sovereignty, and full employment -- will be determined by the outcome of a series of political conflicts. This important book analyses the first industrial policy to emerge from these recent debates on industrial strategy. It goes beyond earlier studies in its treatment of 'new protectionism' by arguing that import regulation is but one component of a broader policy promoting technological modernization and continental rationalization. It also makes a contribution to the ongoing debate in political economy about the role and nature of the Canadian state, emphasizing its organization of an unequal but positive-sum relationship within and between classes. Such an organization cannot allow deindustrialization to occur and so must find a new basis for compromise. An industrial strategy is that basis. Students of politics and public policy formation will find of interest the descriptions on how problems become issues that the state cannot ignore, on the structuring of unequal representation in making policy, and others. The theoretical perspectives can illuminate far more than the recent history of national policy in regard to textiles.

Book Democratic Dilemma

Download or read book Democratic Dilemma written by Nadia Verrelli and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2013-05-31 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The process used to select judges of the Supreme Court of Canada has provoked criticism from the start. Some observers argue the process - where the prime minister has unfettered discretion - suffers from a democratic deficit, but there is also disagreement regarding alternative methods of selection. The Democratic Dilemma: Reforming Canada's Supreme Court explores the institutional features of the Court, whether the existing process used to select judges ought to be reformed, the overall legitimacy of the Court, as well as the selection and appointment processes of Supreme Court justices in other liberal democracies. This book will be of special interest to students and scholars of Canadian federalism, the judiciary, and comparative supreme courts. The Democratic Dilemma: Reforming Canada's Supreme Court is the second volume in the Institute of Intergovernmental Relations' Democratic Dilemma series. The first, The Democratic Dilemma: Reforming the Canadian Senate is edited by Jennifer Smith. Contributors include Arthur Benz (Technische Universität Darmstadt, Germany), Jorge O.
