Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brief Remarks on the History, Authority, and Use of the Sabbath The reader who takes such a view of this deep] y interesting subject, Will peruse the follow ing sheets With'great satisfaction. The writer has evidently chosen for substance the same stand-point; and from it he has surveyed all parts of his subject, With a scrutinizing eye. I te gard With much approbation the course in gen eral which he has taken; and even in minute particulars, I scarcely see any good reason to dis sent from him, except in a very few cases, Where I have expressed my dissent either in a note or in the appendix. Mr Gurney Will be the last man to complain of this for a lover of truth, so sincere and enlightened as himself, Will rejoice at every effort to disclose any thing Which really pertains to the investigation of it.' This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brief Remarks on the History, Authority, and Use of the Sabbath The Sabbath was made for Man. So said the Son of Man, who is Lord of the Sabbath, and who knows its value and importance to those for whom it was made. But if this holy day is adapted by infinite wisdom and goodness, to promote the highest moral and spiritual interests of the human race, (and thus much seems to be involved in the Saviour's declaration), then does it plainly follow, that the keeping of the Sabbath is not to be dispensed with. That which serves in a peculiar manner to promote the eternal interests of man, which "was made for him," is important to him in all ages and in all circumstances. In this way do I satisfy my own mind, that the Sabbath is of perpetual obligation; and that it has been so, from the beginning of the world. When God rested from his work of creation, and sanctified the seventh day and blessed it, his design evidently was, to consecrate it as a day of rest and spiritual improvement for man, whom he had created in his own image. The fourth commandment appears to be only a republication of his original and immutable law, under peculiar circumstances, and with special additions which would secure its observance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Sabbath: Its History, Authority, Duties, Benefits, and Civil Relations; A Series of Discourses It may be added, as illustrating the position of things five years ago, that laws protecting the Sabbath had been, for a quarter of a century at least, practically oh solete that the police department was in a chaotic state - in the change from the Municipal to the Metropolitan regime; that the judicial and municipal officers were largely the candidates of the Sunday liquor interest; and that the commercial crisis of '57 came upon the city like a tempest the very month of the completed organi zation for this movement. And it will thus be seen that few enterprises could encounter more disheartening circumstances, or more demand faith, prudence and zeal on the part of their managers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Divine Authority for the Christian Sabbath Two years ago during my first year at Benton Avenue M. E. Church in this city, the Seventh Day Advent Soul-Sleepers, pitched their tent a few blocks east of my Church and for several weeks run a tent meeting, propagating their peculiar doctrines, and trying to proselyte others to their faith. Some of our people who attended their meetings and read their tracts, which they industriously circulated, begun to be disturbed in mind about their doctrines, and I felt that it was my duty to preach on those points, which I did, announcing beforehand that on the next Sabbath I would preach on "The Divine Authority for the Observance of the Christian Sabbath." I prepared my sermon with great care, writing it out in full. Some time after I preached the same sermon in our District Conference at Billings, Mo., and the Conference requested its publication. A multiplicity of labors and cares have prevented me from complying with that request until now. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book History of the Sabbath Or Day of Holy Rest Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the Sabbath Or Day of Holy Rest Classic Reprint written by John T. Baylee and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-18 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Sabbath, or Day of Holy Rest The Object Of the Author in this little Work has been to put the reader in possession of information, in a condensed form, on the subject of the Sabbath. The word Sabbath has been deliberately chosen, in the title of the Book, as representing an idea which belongs to the Christian dispensation equally as to. The Patri archal or Jewish. The quotations from the Fathers have been extracted from the original writers by the Author himself; a course which, although it involved much labour, he felt would be more satisfactory to his readers than if he had limited himself to references or extracts from other writers, however great their accuracy. The same remark applies to all the other quotations, with one or two unimportant exceptions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Ethics of the Sabbath Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Ethics of the Sabbath Classic Reprint written by David Pirret and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ethics of the Sabbath The critical remarks introduced in the first chap ter seemed necessary to justify the present attempt and they may be useful in calling attention to what I cannot help regarding as serious defects in most of the treatises on this subject hitherto published. The different steps of the main argument are considered in the five following chapters. In the two concluding ones, various questions are discussed which occupy at present a considerable share of public attention. On some of the points, more especially on some of those noticed in the last chapter, it would be unrea sonable to expect entire unanimity, even among the friends of the Sabbath. I have freely stated what appears to me to be truth, without seeking to make my statements harmonize with any particular theory, or please any particular party. In so far as they are true, let them be received in so far as they are not true, let them be rejected. The position, that Government has no right to open on the Sabbath such places of recreation as the Crystal Palace, I hold to be conclusively established. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sabbath and the Sunday: Part 1, Argument; Part II, History Many leaders in the Church know the truth, but are unwilling to Obey it - He that knoweth his master's will and doeth it not shall be beaten If the people catch sight Of the truth, these leaders quiet them by stig matizing the Jewish Saturday and boasting of the majority who favor Sunday.
