This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Engineering Student's Notes, Technical, Philosophical and Otherwise The subject matter that makes up most of the present book was written between the years 1890 and 1897, and published in the Magazine "Industry," of which publication the writer was the editor during that period. The title assumed at that time was "Extracts from a Note Book-by Techno," began and for some time continued as a means of instructing students and apprentices in the processes of engineering work by a half-humorous treatment that would divest the subject of its usual formal and dry presentment in technical books. The articles met with much commendation, but it was found after five or six chapters had been prepared that the field was too circumscribed, and that the "Extracts" must extend into the outer world and change their form, or cease. A new scheme was adopted in the sixth article, where the present revision begins, omitting, with a few exceptions, so much as would fail to have interest for non-technical readers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Engineering Notes Originality in Engineering notes is out of the question moreover, the best works extant on the subject appear to have borrowed so largely from the same source, or from each other, that it is next to impossible mention ing authorities. The object of this work is to supply an exhaustive digest of all that is known on each subject so far as is necessary and sufficient for an Engineer in practice; the Alphabetical Index will enable him at once to arrive at what he wants without wading through irrelevant matter. The detached form of unconnected paragraphs has been adopted to combine succinctness with perspicuity unattainable by a more discursive style. Book Standard Forms of Field Notes for Civil Engineers Classic Reprint

Download or read book Standard Forms of Field Notes for Civil Engineers Classic Reprint written by Chas; C. Anthony and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Standard Forms of Field Notes for Civil Engineers The object of this book is to present forms for notetaking, and such necessary instructions in the use of them, that an engineer can take a complete set of notes and record the results of a survey in neat and workman-like manner. In all the books dealing with Surveying.and Railroad Location very little space has been given to the art of recording notes. An engineer who has worked long in the field will gradually develop a system of note-keeping which he will follow in a general way time after time; yet he will sometimes vary from his form in a few minor instances just enough to confuse a draftsman. As for the younger members of the profession, it is often hard for them to record the results of their surveys in such a manner that they can translate the notes themselves, unless they are plotted while the survey is still fresh in their minds. It is a very common thing to see an engineer called into the office to explain his notes to the draftsman; or a party returned to the field to get information which should have been taken in the original survey. An engineering party can be placed in the field and maintained only at a very large expense; and speed and accuracy is demanded by every employer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lecture Notes on Some of the Business Features of Engineering Practice The commencement address to the Class of 1904, delivered by Walter C. Kerr, Esq, would have been included more appro priately in the Reprints Of Lectures and Papers, but as this was not feasible I have reprinted it here that Mr. Kerr's sound advice, so admirably presented, may be preserved for future classes. I hope that I may be able to develop from these and supple mentary notes a text book on the business features of engineering practice, based upon my experiences in the fields Of Engineering and Business as to the matter, and upon my experiences in the classroom as to the most efficient methods to be employed in presenting this matter to engineer-students already pressed for time in which to perform their assigned tasks. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Addresses to Engineering Students Just here it is pertinent to mention that the compilation has not by any means been undertaken as a money-making venture - far from it - because the Editors have not only done gratis all the work involved in its preparation, but also have themselves paid the cost of typesetting and providing the plates, in order that the book may be sold to engineering students at the actual cost of paper, press - work, binding, and distribution, the latter being reduced to an absolute minimum by cutting out all possible profit thereon. This has permitted of the book being sold to students of engineering, when ordered in large quantities, at seventy-five cents per copy and to the general public in single copies at one dollar. The Editors were guided in this action by the following reasons: First. They want the book not only to be widely read but also to remain permanently for reference in the libraries of those who read it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes in Mechanical Engineering: Compiled Principally for the Use of Students Attending the Lectures in This Subject at the City of London College If students would give the matter a little consideration, it would be apparent to them that the teacher's work must of necessity be supplemented by a large amount of home work on their part. If they could only be sufficiently impressed with the fact that science cannot be absorbed, but must be learnt, the labour of 'teaching would be considerably lightened. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems in the Use and Adjustment of Engineering Instruments: Forms for Field-Notes; General Instructions for Extended Students' Surveys These problems, which have had the benefit of revision after two years' use, are designed to keep each student busy at some definite work, for which he has definite instructions, and to utilize so thor oughly the limited time usually available for this work, that he will have a working knowledge of all the more common engineering instruments by the time he is ready for more advanced work. The student's attention is called to the degree of precision that is required in instrumental work in order to obtain any required precision in the final results - a feature often neglected. Systematic note-keep ing, for which forms are given, is required of the students. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book An Introduction to the Infinitesimal Calculus

Download or read book An Introduction to the Infinitesimal Calculus written by H. S. Carslaw and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Infinitesimal Calculus: Notes for the Use of Science and Engineering Students The principal change 111 this edition will be found in the treatment of the exponential and logarithm. Six years ago few students began the study of the Calculus without having already completed a course in Algebra, including the Theory of Infinite Series. It is now realised that in making this demand the mathematical teacher was asking more than was necessary. The principles underlying the Calculus, in so far as they can be examined in such a course as this, offer little difficulty. N 0 more than an elementary knowledge of Algebra and Trigonometry is required for their discussion; and a real grasp of the meaning of differentiation and integration can be obtained by very many to whom the subject of Infinite Series would appear extremely obscure. Book Notes on Technical Sketching and Free Hand Lettering for Engineering Students Classic Reprint

Download or read book Notes on Technical Sketching and Free Hand Lettering for Engineering Students Classic Reprint written by Alton Lincoln Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-05 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Technical Sketching and Free Hand Lettering for Engineering Students The modern engineer must know how to make drawings in order to know how to read them. However, very little of his time is spent at the drafting board. His drawings consist mainly of sketches showing his ideas in more or less detail and which are turned over to subordinates to be worked out and put in the conventional form. In the solution of his construction problems, he is obliged to keep in mind all three dimensions of materials and a preliminary sketch stands in the place of a model which he can work over and examine in order to clarify and fix his ideas. Such sketches must often be made in great profusion and dexterity with the pencil is fre quently an inspiration to the brain. One of the primary functions of a course in drawing is to cultivate and extend the faculty of thinking in space. In acquiring this faculty, the draftsman must be able to express his ideas quickly and accurately through the medium of drawings. He must also learn to read correctly the ideas of other engineers as expressed in drawings. The actual construction of an object from the drawing representing it is a crucial test of ability to read that drawing. There are many disadvantages of such a test applied for that purpose alone and it is believed that the translation from a projection drawing of the object to an axometric or isometric representation meets all the requirements of the case with far less expenditure of time. The reverse process also gives a most valuable training and the author believes, after long experience in this work, that the methods herein presented secure the best results with the least effort. Though devoted primarily to the teaching of drawing, the illustrations and problems have been selected so as to give the student familiarity with a wide, range of mo manufacturing and engineering practice. A considerable amount 'of material has been added for this sec edition and the author wishes to thank the many friends who have provided material or given suggestions. The author wishes to thank Prof. A. W. French especially for assistance with the chapter on Structural Drawing. Book Supplement No 1 to Lecture Notes on Some of the Business Features of Engineering Practice Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-02-18 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Supplement No; 1 to Lecture Notes on Some of the Business Features of Engineering Practice In notes previously prepared, the general subject of con tracts has been considered, and an attempt made to give in a not too technical form the general principles which underlie all agree ments. If these have been mastered it is now possible to proceed to a consideration of some special forms of contracts which the business or professional man is most frequently called upon to make. The general principles are common to all, but, in addition, each variety of contract gives rise to special rules, which must be considered. One of the most common acts of everyday life is to delegate authority to another, for some more or less general purpose. A moment's consideration will disclose to anyone how frequent this act is. It is often done so casually as to escape notice, but from the act of sending a street urchin to buy a morning paper to the broad power of attorney which the multi-millionaire gives to his confidential secretary the principle is the same, and the two opera tions stand side by side before the law as the establishment of an agency. Let the terms which we are about to use be clearly defined. A Principal is one who delegates to another the authority to represent and act for him.
