Book excerpt: Identification of problems with socioemotional functioning is an important task in early childhood, especially for young children with developmental delays (DD) who are at increased risk of problems (e.g. Carter, 2010; Baker, Blacher, Crnic, & Edelbrock, 2002). Although there are guidelines in place for screening of developmental delays and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), there are no guidelines in place for the screening of socioemotional problems (AAP, 2006; Johnson & Myers, 2007). One of the first steps towards establishing guidelines is to determine which measures should be recommended for screening. There are a variety of parent-report questionnaires that screen for problems with socioemotional functioning. Some of the most common socioemotional screening tools include, the Ages and Stages Questionnaires: Social-Emotional (ASQ:SE; Squires, Bricker, & Twombly, 2002), the Brief Infant-Toddler Social Emotional Assessment (BITSEA; Briggs-Gowan, Carter, Irwin, Wachtel, & Cicchetti, 2004), and the Child Behavior Checklist for ages 1.5 to 5 (CBCL/1.5-5; Achenbach & Rescorla, 2000). In order to determine which of these measures should be recommended, it is first worthwhile to know if these measures agree with each other. The present study sought to build upon past research by examining agreement between the ASQ:SE, BITSEA, and CBCL in a sample of children with DD. Participants were young children between the ages of 18-36 months (N=38), and their parents, enrolled in early intervention services in Ohio. Full abstract can be viewed within the document.

Children were exposed to either multiple caregivers who performed routine duties in a perfunctory manner with minimal interaction or fewer caregivers who were trained to engage in warm, responsive, and developmentally appropriate interactions during routine care. Engaged and responsive caregivers were associated with substantial improvements in child development and these findings provide a rationale for making similar improvements in other institutions, programs, and organizations.

From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting.
