Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brief History of the Hawaiian People At the request of the Board of Education, I have endeavored to write a simple and concise history of the Hawaiian people, which, it is hoped, may be useful to the teachers and higher classes in our schools. As there is, however, no book in existence that covers the whole ground, and as the earlier histories are entirely out of print, it has been deemed best to prepare not merely a school-book, but a history for the benefit of the general public. This book has been written in the intervals of a laborious occupation, from the stand-point of a patriotic Hawaiian, for the young people of this country rather than for foreign readers. This fact will account for its local coloring, and for the prominence given to certain topics of local interest. Especial pains have been taken to supply the want of a correct account of the ancient civil polity and religion of the Hawaiian race. This history is not merely a compilation. It is based upon a careful study of the original authorities, the writer having had the use of the principal existing collections of Hawaiian manuscripts, and having examined the early archives of the government, as well as nearly all the existing materials in print. Book History of the Hawaiian Islands Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the Hawaiian Islands Classic Reprint written by James Jackson Jarves and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-24 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Hawaiian Islands It was designed to interweave with the civil and political account of the nation, a series of sketches illustrative of their present life and condition, and other interesting points which would have enlivened a bare narrative of facts; also to have pictured the wondrous natural phenomena of that prolific portion of the Pacific; the great volcanic eruption of 1840, and a full account of the mightiest of craters, the gigantic Lua Pele, or Kilauea, in Hawaii. But it would have swelled the volume to an unwieldly size, and the author preferred, by giving the political his tory of the group by itself, to test the perhaps too partial opinion of his friends, who opined that the value of the subject would of itself insure the work a fair circulation. Should this be verified, at an early period will be presented an additional volume, which, without being connected with the present, will give in detail all that is necessary to form a cor rect view of the Hawaiian Islands, their condition, prospects, the every-day concerns of the people, and missionary life as it now exists; the two to form a succinct whole, illustrating each other. Book An Account of the Polynesian Race Vol 2

Download or read book An Account of the Polynesian Race Vol 2 written by Abraham Fornander and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-16 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Account of the Polynesian Race, Vol. 2: Its Origins and Migrations and the Ancient History of the Hawahan People to the Times of Kamehameha I In issuing this, the second volume of "An Account of the Polynesian Race," &c., and the "Ancient History of the Hawaiian People," the author gratefully acknowledges the kind reception which the first volume received. It was a hazardous undertaking to publish a work of that kind ten thousand miles away from the author's residence, with no opportunity of revising the sheets as they came from the press, or preparing an index when the volume was finished. The well-known ability and care of his publishers, the world-known Messrs. Trubner & Co., grappled bravely and successfully with the difficulties of a MS. which, owing to peculiar circumstances, had not been clean copied for the press before it was sent away. To Stephen Spencer, Esq., formerly Chief Clerk to the Interior Department of the Hawaiian Government, and now residing in London, the author is under great obligations for the kind and vicarious supervision that he gave to the proof-reading, and for the thoroughly faultless rendition of the Polynesian words, phrases, and entire chants occurring in the work.
