Book excerpt: Alcohol misuse by students is a prevalent public health problem on college campuses across the nation. Underage drinking and binge drinking are two distinct forms of alcohol misuse that are common among college students and often result in negative consequences for the students, the universities, and the surrounding communities. As a result, there is an increasing need for universities to provide targeted intervention programs for students who misuse alcohol. Furthermore, it is important that the selected interventions are capable of successful implementation on campus. The University of Mississippi currently utilizes the Brief Alcohol Screening Intervention for College Students (BASICS) program for students who violate university alcohol policies. The purpose of this study was to conduct a process evaluation of the BASICS program at the University of Mississippi and determine the extent to which this program is being implemented in its intended manner. The evaluation was conducted by attending the BASICS training session for providers, interviewing the Assistant Director for Student Health and the former program director, analyzing BASICS records, and observing individual and group counseling sessions. Findings indicate that BASICS at the University of Mississippi is not being implemented as intended, due to less individual counseling sessions and the lack of motivational interviewing (MI) utilized during individual counseling sessions. Two recommendations include the addition of individual counseling sessions and the use of a MI trainer to instruct providers on proper implementation.

Book excerpt: Developed in 1993 at the University of Washington, Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS) is a preventive intervention program to reduce drinking and enhance awareness about alcohol-related issues. BASICS targets college students who are considered at risk because of heavy drinking behaviors. The brief intervention relies primarily on a motivational interview to provide students with the skills, knowledge, and insight into the consequences of drinking. As originally designed, the student meets with a counselor for two 45-minute sessions, usually a week apart. The first session is feedback and the interview style is acceptance-based and nonjudgmental. The goal is to help students examine their drinking objectively and provide them with feedback and healthy recommendations. This paper presents evidence on the effects of BASICS and similar theory-based interventions for college students. A list of resources is included.

Book excerpt: There is too much high-risk alcohol use among high-risk groups such as student athletes and first-year students. The objectives of the evaluation of the development and implementation of BASICS include: (a) to aid in the development of program goals and objectives, (b) to review the literature pertaining to BASICS implementation at other colleges and universities, (c) to create program documents and disseminate program information to program members, (d) to collaborate with Drexel staff on program development, planning and advertisement, and (e) to provide recommendations for future programs, research, evaluation and policies relating to alcohol education for students. The methods of this project included literature reviews, research, creation of program documents, disseminating information to project members, and participation in developmental meetings with program members. BASICS was developed and implemented for first-year student-athletes. BASICS was unsuccessful in gaining an appropriate number of student-counselors to conduct more than 2 sessions per week. BASICS was also unsuccessful in gaining participation among Drexel first-year student-athletes. However, BASICS was successful in gaining approval by key members of the University including: Dr. Eric Zillmer, Athletic Director, Kathleen O rien, Assistant Director of Academic Services in the Athletic Department, and Dr. Robert Chapman, Clinical Associate Professor and Associate Director of the Behavioral Health Counseling program at Drexel University. BASICS has been identified as a potentially effective program when students who have identified problems or concerns with alcohol are required or highly recommended to participate. More support among potentially influential individuals on campus and new pathways for recruitment should occur before future implementation of BASICS. BASICS has the potential to be an effective alcohol prevention, screening and education program at Drexel. Drexel student-athletes experience unique time constraints due to the 10 week quarter system; therefore, BASICS may not be the most efficient program for student-athletes. There are other factors to take into consideration for implementing BASICS in the future. Currently Drexel is preparing to implement a Medical Amnesty Policy (MAP). MAP has the potential to open opportunities for alcohol education and prevention programs, due to the requirement of the policy for students to be entered into an alcohol education program.

According to The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), roughly four out of five traditional age college students drink alcohol, and about half of those who drink, also consume alcohol through binge drinking (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, n.d.). There are multiple interventions available for college age drinkers. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP) list 27 evidence based interventions that produce positive outcomes in the college student population (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration, 2013a). Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS) is a brief intervention with strong empirical support designed to decrease heavy drinking and alcohol problems in college students (Larimer & Cronce, 2007). The BASICS intervention aims to reduce harmful consumption and associated problems in students who drink alcohol (Dimef et al., 1999). The effectiveness of the BASICS intervention on a faith-based university campus was evaluated and explored using a mixed method study. Overall effectiveness of the BASICS intervention was evaluated using a quantitative approach. The results of the study confirm the effectiveness of the BASICS intervention on a faith-based campus.

Book excerpt: The Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS: Dimeff et al., 1999) is a program used in higher education institutions to reduce drinking outcomes. Level of dependence on alcohol is a global and multidisciplinary concern. The connections between mental health (anxiety and depression) have been well established in the literature. Other connections such as family history and personality dimensions are being further explored. This study reviewed the prevalence and consequences of alcohol use as well as the connections to the specific population of college students. Theoretical frameworks from Chickering and Baxter Magolda are discussed. Quantitative analysis including regression was used to examine the connections between level of dependence on alcohol with the mental health, familial history, and personality dimensions of college students. Results indicated that participants were predominately, male, white, 18-19 years-old, freshman or sophomore, domestic students, and resided in campus residence halls. Research question one results showed that gender is a moderator and that participants anxiety, other drug use, and number of consequences significantly predicted their level of dependence. In research question two, gender was again a moderator and self-efficacy was statistically significant and negative. Research question three showed that gender is a moderator and that anxiety, impulsivity, hopelessness, and self-efficacy were statistically significant. For this third model self-efficacy and hopelessness had negative beta scores.

While research with volunteer participants generally supports the use of cognitive behavioral and motivational interventions in reducing drinking quantities and consequences, research with mandated students (students referred for an intervention following violation of a campus alcohol policy) continues to produce mixed results. The current study evaluated the effectiveness of three interventions: Alcohol Skills Training Program (ASTP) groups, Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS) feedback sessions, and Alcohol Diversion Program (ADP) treatment-as-usual education groups in a sample (N = 61) of mandated students. Pre-intervention behavior change and intervention techniques were also evaluated. Attitudes toward campus policies, readiness to change, intervention satisfaction, and reactions to the sanctioning incident were examined as moderators of intervention efficacy. Finally, defensiveness, norms perceptions, protective behavioral strategies, and alcohol expectancies were examined as mediators of behavioral change. Results revealed a significant pre-intervention decrease in monthly drinks and drinking days. There was a significant effect of time for reductions in blood alcohol content (BAC) and weekly drinks but not consequences. While ASTP and BASICS participants reported decreases in BAC, ADP participants experienced increases over time. Reductions in consequences were related to ASTP participation and lower policy support at baseline. Low external responsibility for the incident predicted greater reductions in BAC, and greater incident aversiveness predicted lower BAC and weekly drinks. Increases in pre-intervention defensiveness were more pronounced among ADP participants as well as male, older, and Greek students. Finally, decreases in overall defensiveness were associated with ASTP participants and more in-session complex reflections. Results from this study suggest a complex relationship between mandated student characteristics and interventions, highlighting potential iatrogenic effects from education-only mandated group interventions, the importance of incident reactions on behavior change, and factors associated with pre- and post-intervention defensiveness.
