Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brief Account of Family of Robert and Susan Everett Massey, of Gorey, Ireland In 1798, Ireland, encouraged by the success of the American colonies in their struggle with Fingland, and aroused by the hVcnch Revolution, rose in rebellion against England. During the early part of this rebellion, Wexford County was the most peaceful district of all Ireland. However, after the men of Wexford had seen their property plundered, their homes fired and their families outraged by the kings troops, they rose in a desperate guerrilla war; and in this most peaceful of all the counties the crudest of deeds were committed. So much suspicion and hatred were awakened that neighbors doubted friends, Orangemen opposed the United Irishmen, and Protestants slaughtered Catholics. During these troublesome times there lived in Gorey, a town of Wexford, Thomas Masseys son, Robert, and his wie, Susan Everett, with their seven children. In June or July of 1798, while sick in bed, Robert Iassey was taken from his home by a party of enraged Catholics, tied to a tree and shot, because he refused to accept their creed. Thus Susan Everett Massey was left to be both father and mother for her children. Nehemiah, the oldest son of Robert and Susan E. Massey, was born in Wexford County, Ireland, and died here, young and unmarried. Hannah, the only daughter, was also born in Wexford County, and when a young woman married William Darlington, who was a dairyman in Ireland. About 1815, in company with her brothers, Henry, Matthew and Richard, and her husband, she came from Ireland to iMorgan County, Ohio, where her hu.?band engaged in farming. One child, Sarah, was born to the Darlingtons; and when she was four years old her father was drowned while attempting to ford a swollen creek on his way home from mill. After her husbands death, Hannah Darlington continued to reside on the farm. After reaching the age of ninety, she suffered an attack of dropsy, from which she died, and was buried at Givisonville, Ohio. She possessed a strong memory and no little business ability. William, the second son of Robert and Susan E. Massey, may have some descendants scattered over this world, but of him we have no further account. Robert, the third son, died when a small child. Henry, the fourth son, was born in Wexford County, on March 14, 1793.Before coming to America with his sister and brothers, he was a sailor. On February 2, 1815, he married a Scotch lady, Miss Margaret Hedgers. They were the parents of Phineas, Matthew. Elsie, Robert and Henry. Henry Massey, Sr., and his brother Matthew died Sept.3, 1827, and are buried in the same grave at Deavertown. Ohio.
