Book Secular Sacred More Sacred

Download or read book Secular Sacred More Sacred written by Stuart Brooking and published by Langham Global Library. This book was released on 2021-10-06 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sacred-secular divide continues to threaten the health of the global church, disempowering lay Christians and undermining the call to integrate all aspects of life under the lordship of Christ. Theological educators seeking a path out of this dichotomy will find themselves both challenged and encouraged by this collection of essays drawn from the 2018 ICETE conference in Panama City. Within its four sections, contributors explore biblical frameworks for integration, urge seminaries to value identity formation as much as skill acquirement, call for a robust theology of work, and challenge theologians to consider their responsibility to the world beyond the church’s borders. Filled with thought-provoking questions and practical suggestions, this book is an excellent resource for all those pursuing a holistic approach to theological education.

Download or read book God Spoke written by Erik Strandness MD MATh and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies consistently show that 90 percent of all people believe in a god of some sort or another. Spirituality, therefore, is not a demographic outlier but rather the statistically significant air we breathe. It is not a hobby for the scientifically illiterate but one of the basic elements in the periodic table of human experience. The real question before us then is not whether god exists, but rather, Who is this god in whom most people believe? We, therefore, need to begin our apologetic project by helping the majority identify their god rather than arguing with the minority about whether or not such a being exists. Most people prefer to live with a hazy notion of spirituality because they dont want a world where God is in control, yet they also dont want to be forced to robotically dance to the tune of their selfish genes. A vague understanding of spirituality gives them a culturally acceptable opt-out clause from a dreary world ruled by chemicals while simultaneously allowing them to define the terms of divine engagement. We are united by the fact that we all have a spiritual hole in our lives, but it is the odd ways in which we fill it that divides us. All paths do not lead to the same God, but they do begin with the same spiritual void. It is here that our journey must begin. In God Spoke, Dr. Strandness makes the case that our spiritual nature is the result of our hardwired human longing to rethink the thoughts of a God who has already spoken his mind. The divine discourse that fills the universe inspires us to bend our ears to hear his creational words, open our eyes to his written Word, and have our hearts transformed by his incarnate Word.

Book Whole Life Mission for the Whole Church

Download or read book Whole Life Mission for the Whole Church written by Mark Greene and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sacred-secular divide permeates our churches, our seminaries, and our lives. By perpetuating the false belief that there are some areas of life that are not important to God, some callings that are second-class, and some spheres of society that are not worth engaging, the sacred-secular divide diminishes our understanding of God, discipleship, missiology, and the gospel itself. Seeking to liberate the global church from the power of this dichotomy, Whole-Life Mission for the Whole Church provides theological educators with the tools they need to combat the sacred-secular divide in the very realm where it is so often generated: the classroom. Filled with contributions from practitioners around the world, this book contains a wealth of insight into both the nature of the problem and the possibilities for its solution. The approaches suggested here are biblically rooted, contextually appropriate, and experientially tested, offering an excellent resource for educators desiring to transform their institutional cultures, curriculums, and classrooms into environments that envision, empower, and liberate the whole church for its role in the mission of God.

Book SacredSecular

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lata Mani
  • Publisher : Taylor & Francis
  • Release : 2018-10-24

  • Pages : 176 pages

Download or read book SacredSecular written by Lata Mani and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What would it mean to conceive of the sacred as a source of knowledge that is as vital as the secular? What insights does a contemplative approach yield in analysing neoliberal globalisation or Hindu fundamentalism? Is a dew drop sacred, or is it secular? In today’s charged atmosphere many believe that the sacred is best kept firmly apart from the realm of the secular. SacredSecular: Contemplative Cultural Critique offers a contrasting view. It argues that the two are indivisible and can productively interweave in illuminating key contemporary issues. Essays investigate the quotidian (trash, cut flowers), the philosophical (advaita, karma), the economic (work, globalisation) and the political (war, violence). Mani invites us to rethink the prevailing view that secularism is the only progressive response to religious authoritarianism. SacredSecular proposes a conceptual approach in which body, mind, heart, nature, matter and spirit are not merely equals, but equally crucial to crafting an inclusive vision and practice. This book addresses several audiences: scholars of contemporary Indian society and culture, spiritual practitioners striving to integrate their practice with their politics, and all those interested in contemplating the present and what it portends for our collective future.

Book Mission and Evangelism in a Secularizing World

Download or read book Mission and Evangelism in a Secularizing World written by Narry F. Santos and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-02-14 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secularization, as a movement away from a religious orientation to life, is strong in Canada and has influence worldwide. In this volume, missiologists and practitioners across Canada consider how an agenda of Christian mission and evangelism can be advanced in a secularizing environment. How can believers be “curious and engaged rather than defensive and fearful”? What changes are required from the evangelical community so that there is productive dialogue and action in ways that maintain faithfulness to the cause of Christ? What should the approach of mission be to a new generation steeped in secular narratives? How do we answer negative caricatures of Christian mission in light of the history of Residential Schools? What examples from the past teach us about developing an irenic approach? What positive trends are currently evident in Canada and around the world that counter the secularizing narrative? These questions and more are considered in this volume by Canadian scholars who recognize the importance of being relevant to society while maintaining integrity with the Gospel message. The essays address secularism in Canadian and worldwide contexts with seriousness, insight, and an underlying theme of hope, recognizing that “God’s mission has been accomplished, is being accomplished, and will be accomplished.”

Book excerpt: In the modern era, solutions to many environmental problems appear to be beyond the reach of a dialogue based solely on argumentation, dialectics, and the presentation of 'evidence.' The purpose of this study is to construct a bridge between incommensurable ways of perceiving reality, a bridge that can facilitate dialogue across worldview boundaries on environmental issues. This book attempts to link ecology, philosophy, and theology through an exploration of a new model of intercultural dialogue. Case studies provide practical and theoretical applications, which lead to a deeper understanding of not only environmental guardianships but also the fundamental relationship between human beings and nature's being. Book New Monasticism and the Transformation of American Evangelicalism

Download or read book New Monasticism and the Transformation of American Evangelicalism written by Wes Markofski and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most of the last century, popular and scholarly common sense has equated American evangelicalism with across-the-board social, economic, and political conservatism. However, if a growing chorus of evangelical leaders, media pundits, and religious scholars is to be believed, the era of uncontested evangelical conservatism is on the brink of collapse-if it hasn't collapsed already. Combining vivid ethnographic storytelling and incisive theoretical analysis, New Monasticism and the Transformation of American Evangelicalism introduces readers to the fascinating and unexplored terrain of neo-monastic evangelicalism. Often located in disadvantaged urban neighborhoods, new monastic communities pursue religiously inspired visions of racial, social, and economic justice-alongside personal spiritual transformation-through diverse and creative expressions of radical community. In this account, Wes Markofski has immersed himself in the paradoxical world of evangelical neo-monasticism, focusing on the Urban Monastery-an influential neo-monastic community located in a gritty, racially diverse neighborhood in a major Midwestern American city. The resulting account of the way in which this movement reflects and is contributing to the transformation of American evangelicalism challenges entrenched stereotypes and calls attention to the dynamic diversity of religious and political points of view which vie for supremacy in the American evangelical subculture. New Monasticism and the Transformation of American Evangelicalism is the first sociological analysis of new monastic evangelicalism and the first major work to theorize the growing theological and political diversity within twenty-first-century American evangelicalism.
