Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discrete mathematics and theoretical computer science are closely linked research areas with strong impacts on applications and various other scientific disciplines. Both fields deeply cross fertilize each other. One of the persons who particularly contributed to building bridges between these and many other areas is László Lovász, a scholar whose outstanding scientific work has defined and shaped many research directions in the last 40 years. A number of friends and colleagues, all top authorities in their fields of expertise and all invited plenary speakers at one of two conferences in August 2008 in Hungary, both celebrating Lovász’s 60th birthday, have contributed their latest research papers to this volume. This collection of articles offers an excellent view on the state of combinatorics and related topics and will be of interest for experienced specialists as well as young researchers.

Book A Mathematical Bridge

    Book Details:

  • Release : 2009
  • ISBN : 9812834079
  • Pages : 672 pages

Download or read book A Mathematical Bridge written by Stephen Fletcher Hewson and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2009 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although higher mathematics is beautiful, natural and interconnected, to the uninitiated it can feel like an arbitrary mass of disconnected technical definitions, symbols, theorems and methods. An intellectual gulf needs to be crossed before a true, deep appreciation of mathematics can develop. This book bridges this mathematical gap. It focuses on the process of discovery as much as the content, leading the reader to a clear, intuitive understanding of how and why mathematics exists in the way it does. The narrative does not evolve along traditional subject lines: each topic develops from its simplest, intuitive starting point; complexity develops naturally via questions and extensions. Throughout, the book includes levels of explanation, discussion and passion rarely seen in traditional textbooks. The choice of material is similarly rich, ranging from number theory and the nature of mathematical thought to quantum mechanics and the history of mathematics. It rounds off with a selection of thought-provoking and stimulating exercises for the reader.

Book Mathematical Models for Suspension Bridges

Download or read book Mathematical Models for Suspension Bridges written by Filippo Gazzola and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-05-29 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work provides a detailed and up-to-the-minute survey of the various stability problems that can affect suspension bridges. In order to deduce some experimental data and rules on the behavior of suspension bridges, a number of historical events are first described, in the course of which several questions concerning their stability naturally arise. The book then surveys conventional mathematical models for suspension bridges and suggests new nonlinear alternatives, which can potentially supply answers to some stability questions. New explanations are also provided, based on the nonlinear structural behavior of bridges. All the models and responses presented in the book employ the theory of differential equations and dynamical systems in the broader sense, demonstrating that methods from nonlinear analysis can allow us to determine the thresholds of instability.

Download or read book Building Bridges II written by Imre Bárány and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-04 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume collects together research and survey papers written by invited speakers of the conference celebrating the 70th birthday of László Lovász. The topics covered include classical subjects such as extremal graph theory, coding theory, design theory, applications of linear algebra and combinatorial optimization, as well as recent trends such as extensions of graph limits, online or statistical versions of classical combinatorial problems, and new methods of derandomization. László Lovász is one of the pioneers in the interplay between discrete and continuous mathematics, and is a master at establishing unexpected connections, “building bridges” between seemingly distant fields. His invariably elegant and powerful ideas have produced new subfields in many areas, and his outstanding scientific work has defined and shaped many research directions in the last 50 years. The 14 contributions presented in this volume, all of which are connected to László Lovász's areas of research, offer an excellent overview of the state of the art of combinatorics and related topics and will be of interest to experienced specialists as well as young researchers.

Download or read book Constructive Analysis written by E. Bishop and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work grew out of Errett Bishop's fundamental treatise 'Founda tions of Constructive Analysis' (FCA), which appeared in 1967 and which contained the bountiful harvest of a remarkably short period of research by its author. Truly, FCA was an exceptional book, not only because of the quantity of original material it contained, but also as a demonstration of the practicability of a program which most ma thematicians believed impossible to carry out. Errett's book went out of print shortly after its publication, and no second edition was produced by its publishers. Some years later, 'by a set of curious chances', it was agreed that a new edition of FCA would be published by Springer Verlag, the revision being carried out by me under Errett's supervision; at the same time, Errett gener ously insisted that I become a joint author. The revision turned out to be much more substantial than we had anticipated, and took longer than we would have wished. Indeed, tragically, Errett died before the work was completed. The present book is the result of our efforts. Although substantially based on FCA, it contains so much new material, and such full revision and expansion of the old, that it is essentially a new book. For this reason, and also to preserve the integrity of the original, I decided to give our joint work a title of its own. Most of the new material outside Chapter 5 originated with Errett.

Book excerpt: Aimed at mathematicians and computer scientists who will only be exposed to one course in this area, Computability: A Mathematical Sketchbook provides a brief but rigorous introduction to the abstract theory of computation, sometimes also referred to as recursion theory. It develops major themes in computability theory, such as Rice's theorem and the recursion theorem, and provides a systematic account of Blum's complexity theory as well as an introduction to the theory of computable real numbers and functions. The book is intended as a university text, but it may also be used for self-study; appropriate exercises and solutions are included.

Download or read book Discrete Mathematics written by Oscar Levin and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-08-16 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This gentle introduction to discrete mathematics is written for first and second year math majors, especially those who intend to teach. The text began as a set of lecture notes for the discrete mathematics course at the University of Northern Colorado. This course serves both as an introduction to topics in discrete math and as the "introduction to proof" course for math majors. The course is usually taught with a large amount of student inquiry, and this text is written to help facilitate this. Four main topics are covered: counting, sequences, logic, and graph theory. Along the way proofs are introduced, including proofs by contradiction, proofs by induction, and combinatorial proofs. The book contains over 360 exercises, including 230 with solutions and 130 more involved problems suitable for homework. There are also Investigate! activities throughout the text to support active, inquiry based learning. While there are many fine discrete math textbooks available, this text has the following advantages: It is written to be used in an inquiry rich course. It is written to be used in a course for future math teachers. It is open source, with low cost print editions and free electronic editions.
