The two friends resolve to find the cause of this crisis—but just as the polar bear and penguin are about to begin their mission, they are confronted by an imposing looking husky, named Hershel, who, unexpectedly, offers the welcome assistance of his dog sled team. And so, the unlikeliest of companions—a polar bear, a penguin, and a team of Siberian huskies—set off on an incredible adventure together. During the course of their travels, they will face a life-threatening disaster on the ice-shelf, and encounter unscrupulous criminals, operating in the nearby sea channel. But, will these courageous comrades be just too late to save the penguin colony; or can they overcome those perilous challenges, and prevail against all the odds?

But during the first half century of motion pictures very few Americans would have thought to call an American movie "art." Up through the 1950s, American movies were regarded as a form of popular, even lower-class, entertainment. By the 1960s and 1970s, however, viewers were regularly judging Hollywood films by artistic criteria previously applied only to high art forms. In Hollywood Highbrow, Shyon Baumann for the first time tells how social and cultural forces radically changed the public's perceptions of American movies just as those forces were radically changing the movies themselves. The development in the United States of an appreciation of film as an art was, Baumann shows, the product of large changes in Hollywood and American society as a whole. With the postwar rise of television, American movie audiences shrank dramatically and Hollywood responded by appealing to richer and more educated viewers. Around the same time, European ideas about the director as artist, an easing of censorship, and the development of art-house cinemas, film festivals, and the academic field of film studies encouraged the idea that some American movies--and not just European ones--deserved to be considered art.

She maps how these actors—though regularly cast in stereotyped and marginalized roles—employed various strategies of cinematic and extracinematic performance to negotiate their complex positions in Hollywood and to ultimately “steal the show.” Drawing on a variety of source materials, Petty explores these stars’ reception among Black audiences and theorizes African American viewership in the early twentieth century. Her book is an important and welcome contribution to the literature on the movies.

This study focuses on popular and lesser-known works of German literature that played an important role in the socio-political life of the Weimar Republic: Storm of Steel by Ernst Jünger (1920), Advance from Mons 1914 by Walter Bloem (1916), The Case of Sergeant Grischa by Arnold Zweig (1927), and All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque (1929). The author shows that these works often share surprisingly similar narrative strategies in describing humorous experiences and soldier laughter to justify direct violence and oppressive power structures, regardless of the works’ ideological assignment and their popular and critical reception. This book also examines the parodic imitations of All Quiet on the Western Front, the German text All Quiet on the Trojan Front by Emil Marius Requark (1930) and the American film So Quiet on the Canine Front by Zion Myers and Jules White (1931) as significant polemical contributions that use humoristic strategies to stress or undermine elements of the original text.

In its current form, the ANI database provides a checklist of about 95,000 names and synonyms, plus details of the position of each species within the hierarchy of arthropod classification. To generate this volume, information for the major Lepidoptera on common names, geographical distribution, host range and status of the recorded pest or beneficial species, has been added. It includes records of about 6,000 species (plus another 6,000 synonyms) of harmful and beneficial Lepidoptera that have been recorded in scientific publications over the past 80 years and abstracted for inclusion in Review of Agricultural Entomology and its predecessors. Most species listed are pests as a result of their larvae feeding on plants, but beneficial species such as the silk moths and species of current or potential use in biological control as predators of mealybugs, scale insects and other pests and weeds, are also included. The host plants listed and information on geographical distribution nevertheless emphasise the insects' importance in crop production. The book is thus an essential reference for agricultural entomologists.
