Book Evaluation of Bridge scour Data at Selected Sites in Ohio

Download or read book Evaluation of Bridge scour Data at Selected Sites in Ohio written by K. S. Jackson and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scour data collected during 1989-1994 were evaluated to determine whether pier scour and contraction scour occurred at 22 bridge sites in Ohio. Pier-scour depths computed from selected pier-scour prediction equations were compared with measured pier-scour depths, and the accuracy of the prediction equations were evaluated. Observed pier-scour relations were compared to similar relations developed through laboratory research. Mean streambed elevations were evaluated to determine the depth of contraction scour. Channel stability was assessed by use of mean streambed elevations at the approach section. Ground-penetrating radar was used at all sites to investigate the presence of historical scour.

Book HEC RAS 2 2 for Backwater and Scour Analysis

Download or read book HEC RAS 2 2 for Backwater and Scour Analysis written by A. David Parr and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) and most bridge consultants in Kansas have been using the DOS-WSPRO program and the KDOT scour spreadsheets to perform bridge hydraulics and scour analysis for the past several years. Unfortunately, DOS-WSPRO is a DOS program that is no longer supported and there is no metric version. Consequently, the newer Windows-based hydraulics program HEC-RAS (Hydrologic Engineering Center River Analysis System) developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers appears to be a logical choice to succeed DOS-WSPRO as the basic flow model in KDOT's bridge design and scour analysis program. HEC-RAS has gained considerable popularity in the engineering community and offers many options not previously available to hydraulic modelers. It also has a scour module and has an option, the WSPRO bridge analysis routine (henceforth called HR-WSPRO). This study compared the HEC-RAS program with the DOS-WSPRO program and examined the HEC-RAS program with regard to scour analysis. The possibility of using the existing KDOT scour spreadsheets with output from the HR-WSPRO bridge routine was also considered. Finally, a literature review was performed to determine if any updates in the scour methods and new approaches to special conditions, such as the effect of debris or pressure flow affecting pier scour, were available.

Book Evaluating Scour at Bridges

Download or read book Evaluating Scour at Bridges written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document is the third of HEC 18, i.e., presents the state of knowledge and practice for the design, evaluation, and inspection of bridges for scour. It contains updated material not included in the second edition dated April 1993. This document is a revision to HEC 18 dated April 1993 which, in turn, was an update of HEC 18 dated Feburary 1991 and of the publication, "Interim Procedures for Evaluating Scour at Bridges," issued in September 1988 as part of the FHWA Technical Advisory T 5140.20, "Scour at Bridges." T 5140.20 has since been superseded by T 5410.23, "Evaluating Scour at Bridges" dated October 28,1991. This document contains revisions obtained from further scour-related developments and use of the 1993 edition of HEC 18 by the highway community

Book A Study of Angle of Attack at Bridges and the PREFES Program

Download or read book A Study of Angle of Attack at Bridges and the PREFES Program written by A. David Parr and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report includes descriptions of three computer programs developed to enable practicing engineers to make use of the two-dimensional finite element model FESWMS-2DH for the analysis of scour at single opening bridges. Multiple opening bridges could be analyzed one opening at a time after using WSPRO to determine the division of flow for each opening. The executable versions of the programs are available. The program descriptions are as follows: PREFES is a preprocessor for FESWMS-2DH which is described in detail in the report. The program PREFES creates the finite element grid input file and various other files required to run FESWMS-2DH. It is designed to create close to the maximum allowable number of finite element nodes with the greatest node density through the bridge opening. This results in very precise flow modeling by FESWMS-2DH. Reliable estimates of angle of attack, velocity magnitude and approach depth can be obtained for scour calculations.

Book Enhanced Abutment Scour Studies for Compound Channels

Download or read book Enhanced Abutment Scour Studies for Compound Channels written by Terry W. Sturm and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental results and analyses are given in this report on bridge abutment scour in compound channels. Experiments were conducted in a laboratory flume with a cross section consisting of a wide floodplain adjacent to a main channel. The embankment length, discharge, sediment size, and abutment shape were varied, and the resulting equilibrium scour depths were measured. Water-surface profiles, velocities, and scour-hole contours were also measured. In the report, a methodology is developed for estimating abutment scour that takes into account the redistribution of discharge in the bridge contraction, abutment shape, sediment size, and tailwater depth. The independant variables in the proposed scour formula are evaluated at the approach-channel cross section and can be obtained froma one-dimensional water-surface profile computer program such as the Water-Surface Profile Program (WSPRO). The proposed scour evaluation procedure is outlined and illustrated, including consideration of the time required to reach equilibrium scour. The proposed methodology is applied to two cases of measured scour in the field.
