Book Analysis Design Cost Comparisons of Simply Supported and Continuous Bridges

Download or read book Analysis Design Cost Comparisons of Simply Supported and Continuous Bridges written by Ardal Hasan Esmail and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was undertaken to compare the design and cost of simply supported and continuous bridges. Type of bridge selected is deck girder bridge where the girders are precast, prestressed of pretension system. All the spans in a given bridge were of equal length. Three different spans namely 20, 30 & 40m were considered. Different load cases were considered and analyzed using Finite Element Method to identify both, the critical load cases, in which the maximum forces occur, and the maximum design forces on which the design is based. Design of pretensioned SY- beams, slabs and diaphragms were carried out either using ready-made packages or manually. The cost of the bridges was estimated manually. The' effect of temperature differences & non-uniform support settlements on the design and cost of these bridges were examined at seven levels of temperature differences and six settlement conditions. It was observed that for a given span, moments in both simply supported and continuous bridges were maximum at similar loaded spans. If the bridges are designed for the primary force effects induced due to dead and live loads only, the continuous types are of lower cost compared to the simply supported types. The cost difference between the two types decreases as bridge span increases. In a continuous beam deck, non-linear temperature distribution across the deck depth and differential settlement of supports, cause additional sagging & hogging moments as well as shear forces, resulting in higher costs, and the economical superiority of continuous types vanishes at a certain temperature change or support settlement level. The effect of differential settlement is more pronounced than that of temperature changes.

Book Fourth International Conference on Current and Future Trends in Bridge Design Construction and Maintenance

This book was released on 2006 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a state-of-the-art reference, an exchange of innovative experience, creative thinking and industry forecasts. This volume presents the proceedings of the fourth international conference in this series based in the Asia Pacific region, in Kuala Lumpur in October 2005 and is applicable to all sectors of the bridge engineering community. BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE AND FUTURE PERFORMANCE The Institution of Civil Engineers has collaborated with internationally renowned bridge engineers to organise three successful conferences to celebrate the enormous achievements made in the field of bridge engineering in recent years. As a discipline, bridge engineering not only requires knowledge and experience of bridge design and construction techniques but must also deal with increasing challenges posed by the need to maintain the long-term performance of structures throughout an extended service life. In many parts of the world natural phenomena such as seismic events can cause significant damage to force major repairs or reconstruction. Therefore, it is appropriate that the first plenary session of this conference is entitled Engineering for Seismic Performance. READERSHIP This compilation of papers will benefit practising civil and structural engineers in consulting firms and government agencies, bridge contractors, research institutes, universities and colleges. In short, it is of importance to all engineers involved in any aspect of the design, construction and repair, maintenance and refurbishment of bridges.

Book Guidance for Good Bridge Design

Download or read book Guidance for Good Bridge Design written by fib Fédération internationale du béton and published by fib Fédération internationale du béton. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addressed to designers and even more so to owners and project managers, this part is meant as a guide to an efficient selection of designers and contractors, and to the preparation of fair contracts providing high quality at reasonable cost. Clearly, a good design must be paid for at its real cost; economising on the design cost can be extremely counterproductive for the owner when considering the final whole-life cost of the project. In addition, it was considered very important to address the designer’s responsibilities and relations with other participants in large projects, and finally design philosophy itself. Part 2 – Design and construction aspects This more technical part is mainly addressed to bridge designers and devoted to a systematic analysis of structural and constructional bridge concepts. Considering the importance of erection techniques in the development of bridge design, this second part of the guide starts by a description of the different construction methods, their advantages and draw-backs, their particularities and, of course, by defining the domain of their most efficient applications. Another main chapter is devoted to the proper design of cross-sections. And finally, a third main chapter deals in detail with the influence of construction techniques on design.

Book Survey of Costs Economic Analysis and Design Guidelines for Corrosion Protection Methods for Post tensioned Concrete Bridges

Download or read book Survey of Costs Economic Analysis and Design Guidelines for Corrosion Protection Methods for Post tensioned Concrete Bridges written by Kimberly Grau Talley and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the design stage, engineers and owners have the most influence on the future durability of post-tensioned concrete bridges. Yet design guidelines are not clear on what corrosion protection methods are appropriate for a given exposure environment. Current specifications do not ignore corrosion protection. However, many simply instruct the designer to protect the anchorage and prestressing steel from corrosion, leaving the selection of the appropriate method to the engineer’s experience. As well, many decision-makers do not have a good understanding of how post-tensioning works, how it can be protected from corrosion, or how much it will cost to increase the durability of the posttensioning system. This thesis includes a description of post-tensioning systems and corrosion protection methods as a reference for those not intimately familiar with the mechanisms and protection approaches. It gives the results of an industry cost survey that shows the expected cost increases, as a percentage of total initial construction cost, from including corrosion protection in the design. As well, life cycle analyses for several methods show their potential to save the owner money over the bridge’s expected life. Additionally, this thesis examines several current or proposed design specifications for their corrosion protection guidance. A new combination of these guidelines is proposed to give a more logical and designer-friendly option

Book Model Code for Service Life Design

Download or read book Model Code for Service Life Design written by fib Fédération internationale du béton and published by fib Fédération internationale du béton. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: fib Bulletin 34 addresses Service Life Design (SLD) for plain concrete, reinforced concrete and pre-stressed concrete structures, with a special focus on design provisions for managing the adverse effects of degradation. Its objective is to identify agreed durability related models and to prepare the framework for standardization of performance based design approaches. Four different options for SLD are given: - a full probabilistic approach, - a semi probabilistic approach (partial factor design), - deemed to satisfy rules, - avoidance of deterioration. The service life design approaches described in this document may be applied for the design of new structures, for updating the service life design if the structure exists and real material properties and/or the interaction of environment and structure can be measured (real concrete covers, carbonation depths), and for calculating residual service life. The bulletin is divided into five chapters: 1. General 2. Basis of design 3. Verification of Service Life Design 4. Execution and its quality management 5. Maintenance and condition control It also includes four informative annexes, which give background information and examples of procedures and deterioration models for the application in SLD. The format of Bulletin 34 follows the CEB-FIP tradition for Model Codes: the main provisions are given on the right-hand side of the page, and on the left-hand side, the comments. Note: An Italian translation of Bulletin 34 is also available; contact us for further details.

Download or read book Life Cycle Cost Analysis of Bridges written by Marco Ditrani and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-02 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scope of this project is to study and apply Life- Cycle Cost Analysis to standard bridges with a length of ca. 20 m by collecting information about the previous and futures initial investments, planning&design, MR&R, user and demolition costs, in order to understand which is the most cost-efficient type of bridge. A second scope is to study the impact of the different cost items on the LCC, to be able to plan accurate investment strategies and, finally, improve the method itself. Eleven bridges of reinforced concrete (with different structural characteristic) and two alternative designs with timber and soil-steel have been studied. The cost of the time the users lose by rerouting or delays during operations on the bridge have been estimated by an application available in BatMan, the National Database of Swedish Road Administration. To make the analysis more reliable, this tool has been improved by creating, for each bridge, a function of the traffic volumes by collecting historical data, and by using the Swedish national traffic model SAMPERS and a linear extrapolation for the forecasting.
