Book Field Inspection Guide for Bridge Deck Cathodic Protection

Download or read book Field Inspection Guide for Bridge Deck Cathodic Protection written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report is intended as a guide for inspectors who are unfamiliar with the construction procedures used when installing cathodic protection systems on reinforced concrete bridge decks. The text has been divided into sections in an effort to simplify the report and make it easier to locate desired information. The first four sections provide some basic background information about cathodic protection. Section V discusses a general system installation; each of the major components are discussed to provide a basic understanding and act as a checklist during the installation process. Section VI discusses the various types of systems that have been installed, to date. This is not intended to be an all-inclusive manual. Rather, it is to be used as a guide to help overcome some of the most common problems associated with the installation of cathodic protection systems. It is meant to support and supplement good specifications, not replace them"--Page 1

Book Iowa System of Bridge Deck Rehabilitation with Cathodic Protection

Download or read book Iowa System of Bridge Deck Rehabilitation with Cathodic Protection written by Champak L. Narotam and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridge deck and substructure deterioration due to the corrosive effects of deicing chemicals on reinforcing steel is a problem facing many transportation agencies. The main concern is protection of older bridges with uncoated reinforcing steel. Many different methods have been tried over the past years to repair bridge decks. The Iowa system of bridge deck rehabilitation has proven to be very effective. It consists of scarifying the deck surface, removing any deteriorated concrete, and overlaying with low slump dense concrete. Another rehabilitation method that has emerged is cathodic protection. It has been used for many years in the protection of underground pipelines and in 1973 was first installed on a bridge deck. Cathodic protection works by applying an external source of direct current to the embedded reinforcing steel, thereby changing the electrochemical process of corrosion. The corroding steel, which is anodic, is protected by changing it to a cathodic state. The technology involved in cathodic protection as applied to bridge decks has improved over the last 12 years. One company marketing new technology in cathodic protection systems is Raychem Corporation of Menlo Park, California. Their system utilizes a Ferex anode mesh that distributes the impressed direct current over the deck surface. Ferex mesh was selected because it seemed readily adaptable to the Iowa system of bridge deck rehabilitation. The bridge deck would be scarified, deteriorated concrete removed, Ferex anode mesh installed, and overlaid with low slump dense concrete. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) promotes cathodic protection under Demonstration Project No. 34, "Cathodic Protection for Reinforced Concrete Bridge Decks."

Book Installation and Operational Comparison of Five Bridge Deck Cathodic Protection Systems

Download or read book Installation and Operational Comparison of Five Bridge Deck Cathodic Protection Systems written by Richard A. Carello and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report compares the application and testing of the following five independent cathodic protection (CP) systems installed on three reinforced concrete bridge decks: 1) Coke Breeze; 2) Metallized Zinc; 3) Raychem "Ferex 100"; 4) Eltech "Elgard 210"; 5) Conductive Polymer. All five CP systems were installed under a single contract and work was performed by the same contractor during the summer of 1988. Construction methods, materials, and the difficulties encountered in installing each type of system are included. During the six year study period (November 1988 to November 1994), all five systems were monitored regularly. Parameters monitored were driving voltage, current density, and polarization decay. The efficiency of providing corrosion protection for each system based on these parameters is compared.

Book A Slotted Cathodic Protection System for Bridge Decks

Download or read book A Slotted Cathodic Protection System for Bridge Decks written by Gerardo G. Clemeña and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A non-overlay, slotted cathodic protection system was installed two years ago on a concrete bridge deck in Virginia. The design, installation, and operation of this system are fairly straightforward. A protective current density of 1.6 mA/ft2 (17 mA/m2) as determined by E-log I curves has been applied constantly on the deck. Various tests have shown that polarization of the structure has been achieved. After more than 18 months in service, the various components of this system appeared to be in good condition.

Download or read book Cathodic Protection for a Continuous Box Girder Bridge Deck written by Champak L. Narotam and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridge deck deterioration due to corrosive effect of deicers on reinforcing steel is a major problem facing many agencies. Cathodic protection is one method used to prevent reinforcing steel corrosion. The application of a direct current to the embedded reinforcing steel and a sacrificial anode protects the steel from corrosion. This 1992 project involved placing an Elgard Titanium Anode Mesh Cathodic Protection System on a bridge deck. The anode was fastened to the deck after the Class A repair-work and the overlay was placed using the Iowa Low Slump Dense Concrete System. The system was set up initially at 1 mA/sq ft.
