Book Guidelines for Repair and Maintenance of Bridge Coatings

Download or read book Guidelines for Repair and Maintenance of Bridge Coatings written by Christopher L. Farschon and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject program investigated the applicability of various materials and methods for repair and overcoating of existing steel bridge paint systems. The program included information review, material selection, laboratory screening testing, and extended field exposure testing phases. Sixteen commercially available industrial maintenance coating systems were applied in parallel test patches to four separate structures. These structures are located in Chicago, Illinois; New York, New York; Manchac, Louisiana; and Hookset, New Hampshire. Typical surface preparation procedures used on overcoating jobs were used to clean test patch areas. This included low pressure water washing and mechanical removal of loose paint and rust using power tools. Results indicate varying performance between the coatings tested.

Book Bridge Inspection Practices

Download or read book Bridge Inspection Practices written by George Hearn and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2007 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis reports bridge inspection practices in the United States and selected foreign countries. The synthesis is a collection of information on formal inspection practices of departments of transportation (DOTs). These are primarily visual inspections and they provide data to bridge registries and databases. For U.S. inspection practices, this synthesis reports on inspection personnel, inspection types, and inspection quality control and quality assurance. Staff titles and functions in inspection programs are reported, together with qualifications and training of personnel, formation of inspection teams, and assignment of teams to bridges. Inspection types are described in terms of their scope, methods, and intervals. Quality control and quality assurance programs are reviewed in terms of the procedures employed, staff involved, quality measurements obtained, and the use of quality findings in DOT inspection programs. Foreign practices are presented in the same organization of inspection personnel, types, and quality programs. Comparisons of U.S. and foreign inspection practices are included. Information was obtained from a questionnaire sent to U.S. state transportation departments, similar questionnaires modified individually for transportation agencies in selected foreign countries, and formal documents used by transportation departments and agencies. These documents primarily included bridge inspection manuals, inspection training manuals, and technical memoranda, but also included blank forms for inspections, DOTs job descriptions for inspectors, and descriptions of inspection training courses. Overall, this synthesis includes information from forty U.S. state transportation departments and from roads agencies in eight foreign nations (Denmark, France, Finland, Germany, Norway, South Africa, Sweden, and the United Kingdom). The synthesis also includes, in an appendix, information from a few provincial and municipal transport agencies in Canada.

Book Maintenance Issues and Alternate Corrosion Protection Methods for Exposed Bridge Steel

Download or read book Maintenance Issues and Alternate Corrosion Protection Methods for Exposed Bridge Steel written by Tom W. Neal and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1998 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to state department of transportation (DOT) bridge maintenance engineers, coating specialists, chemists, and researchers. Manufacturers and suppliers of corrosion protection products and systems for exposed structural steel on existing bridges will also find it of interest. This synthesis describes current practice regarding maintenance and protection strategies for exposed structural steel on existing bridges. NCHRP Synthesis 251, Lead-Based Paint Removal for Steel Highway Bridges ( 1997), provides a complementary and more in-depth treatment of maintenance issues involving lead-based paint removal. This report of the Transportation Research Board defines the maintenance management systems and decision making criteria used by transportation agencies for maintaining exposed bridge steel. Material selection criteria, surface preparation and application practices, quality control and quality assurance programs, and funding mechanisms are discussed in detail. The impact of recent and proposed environmental and worker protection regulations on current practice is reported. Information for the synthesis was collected by surveying state transportation agencies and by conducting a literature search. Responses to the survey, Appendix C to this document, are published on the Internet as NCHRP Web Document 11.

Book Protective Coatings for Concrete Bridge Decks

Download or read book Protective Coatings for Concrete Bridge Decks written by Richard J. Irwin and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance of protective coatings for bridge decks is evaluated. Applications to bridges on the New York State highway system from 1961 through 1967 included 1) surface overlays, 2) membranes between the structural slab and bituminous wearing course, and 3) surface sealants. Overlays and membranes consisted of epoxies, polyesters, polyurethanes, latexes, neoprenes, silicone rubbers, and asphalt cutbacks. Surface sealants included silicones, distillate oils, and linseed oil. None of the surface overlays lasted more than 2 to 3 yr. However, a flexible polyester resin with fiber glass has provided satisfactory service for 1-1/2 yr and will remain under observation. Leakage of box-girder bridges with a membrane was primarily due to shear-key construction (since modified), while the same materials applied to composite bridges were associated with leakage that could not be explained. A more comprehensive survey of membranes is planned. Silicone and distillate oil sealants on non-air-entrained concrete did not improve long-term durability. Air-entrained concrete, both with and without linseed oil treatment, showed no evidence of deterioration after 4 yr of exposure.

Book Coatings for Harsh Environments

Download or read book Coatings for Harsh Environments written by Shiladitya Paul and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-11-13 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The operation of numerous components that are critical to safety in industries around the world relies on protective coatings. These coatings often allow process equipment to serve a purpose in environments well beyond the operational limit of the uncoated components. Durability, ease of application, repairability, reliability and long-term performance of such coatings are all key to their application. Therefore, this book, Coatings for Harsh Environments, is devoted to research and review articles on the metallic, non-metallic and composite coatings used in aggressive environments. In particular, the topics of interest include, but are not limited to: coatings for high temperature and molten salt applications; thermal spray and cold spray coatings for aggressive environments; corrosion, wear and cavitation resistant coatings; coatings for mitigating marine corrosion; coatings for chemical and petrochemical plants; thermal barrier coatings.

Book Protective Coatings for Highway Structural Steel

Download or read book Protective Coatings for Highway Structural Steel written by John D. Keane and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A current state-of-the-art survey is presented with regard to painting of highway structural steel. A thorough literature review was conducted and an inspection and evaluation made of more than 4,000 paint exposure tests. Paint film thickness measurement studies were made. Specific recommendations are given for selecting typical paint systems on the basis of six environmental zones, which represent the range of severity of environment in which highway steel structures are located in the United States. Model specifications are suggested for surface preparation, application, material procurement, and paint system.
