Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bridewell Royal Hospital, Past and Present: A Short Account of It as Palace, Hospital, Prison, and School, With a Collection of Enteresting Memoranda Hitherto Unpublished The present volume is the outcome of an attempt to put into interesting shape and form, some of the old records and facts, respecting one of our ancient Royal Foundations. After the lapse of three hundred years, notwithstanding their somewhat altered conditions, the three institutions termed the "Royal Hospitals" of Christ's, Bridewell, and St. Thomas's still remain no mean portion of the inheritance bequeathed to the citizens of London; and it is matter of congratulation, that great good is still being done by them to the community at large. Whether for the sick and needy, or for the education of the middle classes, and the poor and necessitous, our Royal Hospitals are noble monuments in these times of the thought, care, and unselfishness of our forefathers for the benefit of others. Book The Spaces of the Hospital

Download or read book The Spaces of the Hospital written by Dana Arnold and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-24 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spaces of the Hospital examines how hospitals operated as a complex category of social, urban and architectural space in London from 1680 to 1820. This period witnessed the transformation of the city into a modern metropolis. The hospital was very much part of this process and its spaces, both interior and exterior, help us to understand these changes in terms of spatiality and spatial practices. Exploring the hospital through a series of thematic case studies, Dana Arnold presents a theoretically refined reading of how these institutions both functioned as internal discrete locations and interacted with the metropolis. Examples range from the grand royal military hospital, those concerned with the destitute and the insane and the new cultural phenomenon of the voluntary hospital. This engaging book makes an important contribution to our understanding of urban space and of London, uniquely examining how different theoretical paradigms reveal parallel readings of these remarkable hospital buildings.

Book Borders and Travellers in Early Modern Europe

Download or read book Borders and Travellers in Early Modern Europe written by Thomas Betteridge and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early modern Europe was obsessed with borders and travel. It found, imagined and manufactured new borders for its travellers to cross. It celebrated and feared borders as places or states where meanings were charged and changed. In early modern Europe crossing a border could take many forms; sailing to the Americas, visiting a hospital or taking a trip through London's sewage system. Borders were places that people lived on, through and against. Some were temporary, like illness, while others claimed to be absolute, like that between the civilized world and the savage, but, as the chapters in this volume show, to cross any of them was an exciting, anxious and often a potentially dangerous act. Providing a trans-European interdisciplinary approach, the collection focuses on three particular aspects of travel and borders: change, status and function. To travel was to change, not only humans but texts, words, goods and money were all in motion at this time, having a profound influence on cultures, societies and individuals within Europe and beyond. Likewise, status was not a fixed commodity and the meaning and appearance of borders varied and could simultaneously be regarded as hostile and welcoming, restrictive and opportunistic, according to one's personal viewpoint. The volume also emphasizes the fact that borders always serve multiple functions, empowering and oppressing, protecting and threatening in equal measure. By using these three concepts as measures by which to explore a variety of subjects, Borders and Travellers in Early Modern Europe provides a fascinating new perspective from which to re-assess the way in which early modern Europeans viewed themselves, their neighbours and the wider world with which they were increasingly interacting.
