Book The Practical Brick and Tile Book Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Practical Brick and Tile Book Classic Reprint written by Edward Dobson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practical Brick and Tile Book The preparation of this little work has necessarily es. tended over a considerable period of time, and, although our limits preclude anything like an attempt at a complete view of the principles and practice of Brickmaking, it will be found to contain much practical information which has never yet been published, and descriptions of processes which are little known beyond the localities where they are practised. The whole of the illustrations have been drawn expressly for the work, and the descriptions of tools and processes have been written from personal observation, no dependence having been placed on verbal description, even by experienced workmen. Working brickmakers are mostly illiterate men, unable to describe correctly their own operations, and still less to explain their meaning. I have therefore considered it necessary to have every process here described carefully watched throughout, either by myself or by some one on whose accuracy of observation I could place dependence. In the course of last autumn I drew up several papers of questions, embracing a variety of points on which it was found difficult to obtain correct information, but which were distributed amongst those of my friends who were likely to have opportunities of ascertaining what was required. Book Practical Masonry Bricklaying and Plastering Both Plain and Ornamental

Download or read book Practical Masonry Bricklaying and Plastering Both Plain and Ornamental written by Peter Nicholson and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Masonry, Bricklaying and Plastering, Both Plain and Ornamental: Containing a New and Complete System of Lines for Stone-Cutting In submitting the present Volume to the Public, we have to offer our grateful acknowledgments for the very favourable reception which the previous work on Carpentry and Joinery has met with, and we feel much gratified in having been, in an eminent degree, successful in our endeavours to unfold and elucidate the scientific Principles and Practical Application of those Arts which have the object of employing Wood in the construction of Buildings: we now proceed to develope, in a similar manner, the scientific Frinciples and Practice of the Arts of Construction, using other materials, and particularly the important Arts of Masonry and Bricklaying, and also the Ornamental Art of Plastering. Our plan consists in separately treating the Arts of Construction, and elucidating them by grouping together those principal branches which have a natural relation to each other, and which require similar operations, and in which a workman in the one always has an advantage in knowing the principles of the others; and we are the more powerfully encouraged to proceed in it, by the knowledge that this plan is as new as it will be found useful, and we trust the Work itself will bear the palm, as well for originality and beauty, as for its practical utility. The nature of our Work will be more fully understood from the following short sketch of its plan. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Stonemason and the Bricklayer Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Stonemason and the Bricklayer Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Stonemason and the Bricklayer Ike the companion volumes in the present series of works, designed for Home Study or self-instruction in the various departments of Industrial Work, the matter forming the major portion of the present volume appeared originally in the well-known serial entitled The Industrial self-instructor, under the two heads of The Stonemason and The Bricklayer. The leading departments of the two constructive arts were fully described and largely illustrated by a wide and extended range of diagrams in the text, supplemented with a series of full-page plates; but while of necessity many of the textual illustrations were only dia gramatic in character, these amply meeting the requirements of description of various points and principles of work - the illustrations for the most part were working drawings reduced and arranged from drawings and designs used in actual construction. These gave, therefore, an amount of practical information calculated to be of great value to the student. These have nearly all been reproduced in the present volume. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the INTRODUCTION. The art of bricklaying is unique in that the fundamental principles of brick work today are not unlike those exemplified by the oldest ruins of thousands of years ago. The bricklayer also stands almost alone, as one who has not been obliged to compete in his trade with women, with machinery, or with foreign manufacturers. Each old country has had its local methods of bricklaying; but not until the last score of years have bricklayers, coming to America from all countries, bringing their best local methods with them, learned from each other and adopted the best of each others, methods. The purposes of this book are as follows: (a) To put in writing that knowledge which has been handed down by word of mouth from journeyman to apprentice for generations. (b) To record methods of handling labor, materials and plant on brick work that will reduce costs and at the same time enable the first-class workman to receive higher pay. (c) To enable an apprentice to work intelligently from his first day. and to become a proficient workman in the shortest possible time.

Book Brick Scale Tables

Download or read book Brick Scale Tables written by Hydraulic Press Brick Company and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brick-Scale Tables: With Explanatory Notes for the Designer in Brickwork The Scales are printed on thin card, so that they maybe used not only in the usual manner, but also in the more convenient method of slipping them under the tracing paper or cloth, thus permitting the draughtsman to trace directly the divisions - by far the easiest method in securing accurate and rapid work. To select the proper Scales for the vertical and horizontal dimensions of any given wall to be erected, two factors must be carefully taken into consideration: first, the size of the brick to be used; and, secondly, the proposed size of joint in which the brick is to be laid. The brick size should always be obtained from actual measurements by averaging the size of a number of the bricks to be used, as they slightly differ in dimensions even when of the same variety.
