Book excerpt: Nathan Bedford Forrest has to be considered one of the most remarkable men of the War Between the States. Although completely untutored in the art and science of war, his aggressive use of rapid movement and concentration of force during his raids have become legendary. The campaigns he led into Union occupied territory anticipated the mobile operations that have become the hallmark of modern land warfare. He achieved these feats of arms through his use of horse soldiers as mounted infantry, thus combining the mobility of cavalry with the hitting power of the foot soldier. This amalgamation of force and rapidity of movement was the key to his great victory on the 10th of June, 1864 at the Battle of Brice's Cross-Roads. This action in north-east Mississippi, also known as Tishomingo Creek by Southerners and Guntown by Yankees, resulted in Forrest's defeating in detail an 8,500 man Union column of cavalry, infantry and artillery, in effect destroyed a force nearly twice the size of his own command. In the following pages is found the testimony of the men who were there, those who fought, and survived that hot day in Mississippi. These are the words, thoughts and stories of the victors and the vanquished, attesting to their pride in triumph, along with excuses and recriminations from the defeated. As editor, I have recorded their testimonies without any alteration and only inserted a few footnotes to clarify some of the more obscure references made by the writers.

Frisby concludes his excellent study with a narrative of the pivotal Battles of Franklin and Nashville."

Book Mississippi s Civil War Battlefields

Download or read book Mississippi s Civil War Battlefields written by Randy Bishop and published by . This book was released on 2024-07-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1862 and 1864, Mississippi was the site of significant conflicts such as the Battle of Corinth and the Siege of Vicksburg. This history book covers the fourteen major skirmishes that took place within the Magnolia State during the Civil War and offers a detailed description of each location's current state of preservation. The maintenance of these sites is necessary to memorialize the more than 80,000 forgotten men who fought in these battles. In chronological order, sixteen chapters discuss each skirmish in detail and include firsthand accounts from those embroiled in the fighting, depicting the conditions faced throughout the series of conflicts. Photographs taken during the Civil War, along with images of the sites today, offer a past and present perspective of the battles that occurred within Mississippi's boundaries. "Crisp and concise . . .The current state of preservation that Bishop provides for each of these sites is timely and helps underscore the significance of Mississippi's rich Civil War heritage." -Terrence J. Winschel, historian, Vicksburg National Military Park, and author, Triumph and Defeat: The Vicksburg Campaign "A valuable guide for tourists and students of the American Civil War. Mr. Bishop has compiled a valuable collection of narratives, maps, and photos that will aid the visitor in appreciating and enjoying these hallowed grounds and the need for their preservation." -Edwina Carpenter, director, Brice's Crossroads Visitor and Interpretive Center The Magnolia State was the site of such famous Civil War conflicts as the raid on Holly Springs and the siege of Vicksburg. This chronological study details the fourteen major battles that took place in Mississippi between 1862 and 1864, noting the level of preservation for each location. Diary entries offer firsthand accounts of life during the war, on and off the battlefield, and maps provide the reader with a deeper understanding of the combat that occurred in the state. In addition to images from the past, present-day photographs depict the current state of the battle sites, which memorialize the brave men who fought for Mississippi.

Book excerpt: Few students of the Civil War know that legendary historian Edwin C. Bearss produced a classic study on the little-known but significant Tupelo Campaign. The fighting in Mississippi was overshadowed by Nathan Bedford Forrest’s more spectacular victory at Brice’s Crossroads a month earlier. Bearss performed the research and writing for the Department of the Interior in 1969, and only a handful of softcover copies were circulated. It is published here for the first time, with the assistance of award-winning author David A. Powell, as Outwitting Forrest: The Tupelo Campaign in Mississippi, June 22–July 23, 1864. The engagement came about when Maj. Gen. A. J. Smith marched a Federal expeditionary force (his XVI Army Corps) into northern Mississippi in early July 1864. The thrust forced a response, the largest of which was delivered by the combined Confederate cavalry of Stephen D. Lee (who was in general command) and Forrest. The tactical result was a Union defensive success. The larger Confederate strategic play, however—one that might have impacted the course of the war in the Western Theater—would have been to unleash Forrest on a raid into Middle Tennessee to destroy the single line of railroad track feeding and supplying the Union armies of William T. Sherman in his ongoing operations around Atlanta. Instead, his troopers were contained within the Magnolia State, where his combat effectiveness was severely curtailed. Editor Powell has left Bearss’s prose and notes intact, while adding additional sources and commentary of his own. The result is an exceptional study that has finally been made available to the general reading public as part of the Savas Beatie Battles & Leaders Series.

Book Work for Giants

Download or read book Work for Giants written by Thomas E. Parson and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the summer of 1864 a Union column, commanded by Maj. Gen. Andrew Jackson Smith, set out from Tennessee with a goal that had proven impossible in all prior attempts - to find and defeat the cavalry under the command of Confederate major general Nathan Bedford Forrest. Forrest's cavalry was the greatest threat to the long supply line feeding Sherman's armies as they advanced on Atlanta. Smith marched at the head of his "gorillas," veteran soldiers who were fresh from the Red River Campaign. Aside from diverting Confederate attention away from Sherman, Smith's orders were to destroy Southern railroads and confront Forrest in Mississippi. Just weeks earlier, a similar Union expedition had met with disaster at the Battle of Brice's Crossroads, perhaps the greatest victory of Forrest's military career. Joined by reinforcements led by Lt. Gen. Stephen Dill Lee, Forrest and his men were confident and their morale had never been higher. However, for two weeks, Smith outmarched, outfought, and outmaneuvered the team of Lee and Forrest. In three days of bitter fighting, culminating in the battle at Harrisburg, the Confederates suffered a staggering defeat. Forrest's corps was devastated. He and his men would recover but would never regain their earlier strength, nor would they ever again prove a serious threat to veteran Union infantry. Work for Giants focuses on the details of this overlooked campaign and the efforts, postbattle and postwar, to minimize the outcome and consequences of an important Union victory. Parson draws heavily from previously untapped diaries, letters and journals, and eyewitness accounts, bringing to life the oppressive heat, cruel depredations, and brutal combat the soldiers encountered, and the stoic humor they used to endure them.
