Book Brice Marden Paintings and Drawings

Download or read book Brice Marden Paintings and Drawings written by Klaus Kertess and published by Abrams. This book was released on 1992 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brice Marden's art is deceptively austere. Within the seemingly narrow color range of his paintings and drawings, he orchestrates remarkable thematic variations of color, light, scale and mood. His monochromatic gray palette of the 1960s, expressing a "vocabulary of ambiguities,'' gave way to limpid motions and a neoclassical exploration of color-and-light relationships. Kertess, a curator at New York City's Whitney Museum, links the elemental grace of Marden's more recent works to this American artist's summer sojourns on Hydra, a Greek island in the Aegean Sea. In Marden's organic, cellular structures, Kertess sees the influence of Chinese calligraphy and Marden's trips to the Far East. Illustrated with 158 plates (133 in color), this handsome monograph follows Marden's metamorphosis from a pure abstractionist to an artist seeking to objectify the spiritual, as he does in his Annunciation series and in the Elements, which are symbolic paintings rooted in medieval alchemy.

Book Brice Marden These paintings are of themselves

Download or read book Brice Marden These paintings are of themselves written by Eliot Weinberger and published by Rizzoli Publications. This book was released on 2022-09-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lavishly illustrated volume features new paintings and works on paper by Brice Marden, with an essay by Eliot Weinberger. Published to coincide with a 2021 exhibition of new paintings and works on paper by Brice Marden, this catalogue includes full-color illustrations of each work, as well as details of works and installation views documenting the exhibition. Portraits of the artist in his studio were taken by the artist’s daughter, Mirabelle Marden, and are accompanied by images of works in progress. Marden’s paintings evoke the daily and seasonal shifts in natural light and color that the artist observes when working in his studio in Tivoli in upstate New York. He begins with drawing, filling some canvases with gestural glyphs that occupy a realm between writing and painting. Over these, he applies sinuous, multihued networks of linear brushstrokes, establishing interrelationships between the compositions’ straight and curving lines, and between their contours—whether defined or implied—and perimeters. Related works on paper made on the Caribbean island of Nevis reveal the immediacy and range of Marden’s drawing practice and exemplify the artist’s sustained engagement with the traditions of Chinese poetry and calligraphy, which he initiated in the 1980s and has continuously developed ever since. A new text by Eliot Weinberger takes this particular interest as its point of departure, connecting Marden’s work to the origin of Chinese writing and early modernist philosophies about the content of abstract art.

Book excerpt: This book is the first to catalogue in one volume all of abstract artist Brice Marden's work From the 1990s, and includes, unlike other publications on the artist, marvelous large details of the pieces, which give the reader a better perspective of what the works are like in actual size. Book Gregory Crewdson Alone Street

Download or read book Gregory Crewdson Alone Street written by and published by Aperture. This book was released on 2021-09-14 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alone Street brings together two major bodies of work by Gregory Crewdson, Cathedral of the Pines (Aperture, 2016) and An Eclipse of Moths (Aperture, 2020), in a single, elegant, and affordable monograph. Both series expand on the artist's obsessive exploration of the psychogeography of small-town, post-industrial New England and underscore the precision and depth of Crewdson's unique mode of photographic storytelling. In each image, light, color, and carefully crafted scenography evoke the feeling that, as art historian Alexander Nemerov has astutely described, "all that ever happened in these places seems crystallized in his tableaux, as if the quiet melancholy of Crewdson's scenes gathered the unruly sorrows and other little-guessed feelings of people long-gone who once stood on those spots." In addition to the full set of images from each series, Alone Street, presents a selection of behind-the-scenes images and storyboards, revealing the extensive preparation and planning that went into the making of each work.

Book Al Taylor Early Paintings

Download or read book Al Taylor Early Paintings written by Al Taylor and published by David Zwirner Books. This book was released on 2017-05-23 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Al Taylor began his studio practice as a painter and although he is more widely known for the three-dimensional works he started making in 1985, the artist maintained that his constructions weren’t “at all about sculptural concerns; [they come] from a flatter set of traditions.” Throughout his career, whether he worked on canvas, drawings and prints, or sculpture, the creative process of Taylor’s oeuvre was fundamentally grounded in the formal concerns of painting. Published on the occasion of an exhibition at David Zwirner, New York, in spring 2017, Al Taylor: Early Paintings is the first book to focus exclusively on the artist’s works on canvas, featuring a selection of rarely seen paintings created between 1971 and 1980. New scholarship by poet and art critic John Yau examines the visual relationships that connect Taylor’s paintings, drawings, and sculptural objects, while also reflecting on the art world in New York City during the 1970s. In addition, a conversation conducted by Mimi Thompson between renowned painters Stanley Whitney and Billy Sullivan—all of whom knew Taylor well during his lifetime—provides insight into his reputation as an “artist’s artist.” Twenty-six paintings are at the heart of this catalogue—embodying the subtleties of reduction and restraint, they nonetheless have hints of the idiosyncratic playfulness that would come to characterize Taylor’s later works. In some canvases, the artist delineates spatial perspectives by incorporating the wall in shaped compositions where a single color often dominates; elsewhere, it is the interaction of his color juxtapositions and fluid paint application that energize the canvas. Both painterly and sculptural in their address, these works deviate from the usual tropes of abstraction to uniquely engage space, perception, and possess a lyrical rhythm. This new publication reveals and validates the importance of Al Taylor’s paintings both within his own practice and in the context of twentieth-century abstraction.

Book excerpt: Throughout an ever-shifting body of work, David Maljkovi? returns to ?the question of form,? asking how considerations of form itself might illuminate the ebb and flow of ideologies, for example, or the overlaying of past, present, and future. While embracing a wide range of media?including photography, painting, video, sculpture, and various hybrids?the Croatian artist has developed distinctive methods of incorporating, and refiguring, his own earlier works in new installations.0Along with every exhibition, Maljkovicc translates his work into the form of a book, which becomes another lively medium for the artist. For 'Also on View', he collaborated with designer Toni Uroda to channel the queries of his solo exhibition at the Renaissance Society, which brought together elements from different projects to create a new presentation tailored to the architectural space. The publication features a dynamic array of images, a rendition of the artist talk Maljkovic? delivered on opening night, and an essay by curator Karsten Lund.00Exhibition: The Renaissance Society, Chicago, USA (09.02-07.04.2019).

Download or read book Looking East written by John Stomberg and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western artists have incorporated Asian styles and techniques into their work at different periods since the 1860s, says Stomberg, but the Looking East artists draw on that legacy in entirely new ways. All three painters, East Coast natives who were born at roughly the same time and studied with some of the same teachers, became fascinated with the art of China in the 1980s after pursuing very different paths. Marden made his reputation as a minimalist in the 1960s and 1970s, Mazur turned to realism, and Steir became a leader in the postmodernist movement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of Brice Marden's draftsmanship and the catalytic role the medium of drawing plays in his larger oeuvre In 1979, Brice Marden (b. 1938) asked that his drawings be thought of "as spaces," reflecting the idea that drawing is a medium that is much more than its two physical dimensions. Looking closely at six series of drawings that span nearly the entirety of Marden's ongoing career, this luxuriously illustrated presentation features works spanning from 1975 to 2019, including the never-before-published Letters from Borobudur of 2010. In addition to rarely seen early monochrome works, three groups of 1979-80s drawings--Mirabelle Addenda, Shell, and Cold Mountain Studies--foreshadow the artist's mature linear work and highlight the process of invention and permutation that occurs as Marden thinks and draws on paper. A concise overview of Marden's drawing practice investigates the geographies and methods that inform his work, while an artist interview offers insight into how Marden uses the medium as a means of exploring the creation of spaces on drawing surfaces. Distributed for the Menil Collection Exhibition Schedule: Menil Drawing Institute, the Menil Collection, Houston (February 21-October 11, 2020)

Book excerpt: This book celebrates a number of artistic endeavours: music, painting and the skill of making in general with particular reflection upon Japanese aesthetics. Composer, Monty Adkins and visual artist, Pip Dickens (through a Leverhulme Trust Award collaboration) investigate commonality and difference between the visual arts and music exploring aspects of rhythm, pattern, colour and vibration as well as outlining processes utilised to evolve new works within these practices. The hand-cut paper Katagami stencil: a beautiful utilitarian object once used to apply decoration on to Japanese kimonos, is used as a poignant symbol the hand-made machine - by Adkins and Dickens both within the production of paintings and sound compositions and as a thematic link throughout the book. The book reviews examples of a number of contemporary artists and craftspeople and their individual approaches to making things well. It explores the balance between hand skills and technology within a works production with particular reference to Richard Sennetts review of material culture in The Craftsman. Shibusa includes contributing essays by arts writer, Roy Exley, who examines convergence and crossover within the arts and an in-depth history, and review, of the kimono making industry by Kyoto designer, Makoto Mori.
