The question is how far the Brexit can influence the british economy positively or negatively. Another question is what models the british population can use after the potential Brexit to prevent a negative outcome. The aim of this work will therefore be to identify the potential impact of the Brexit on the UK economy, as well as on the EU. On 26 June 2016 for the first time in the history of European politics, direct democracy was applied. The British population decided directly and not through a parliamentary representation in a referendum, to withdraw from the European Union. The British EU cepticism rose with the debt crisis in the euro zone that had existed in the years prior to the referendum. At the end of the referendum, a majority of 51.9% of the British population was against remaining in the EU. The referendum had a turnout of 72%, with Scotland and Northern Ireland showing a majority rejection of the resignation, while Wales and England spoke in favour. Never before in the history of the EU, a country has left the Confederation of States which makes the economic consequences of the so-called Brexit for the British or European economy uncertain, because it is unclear what the relations of the United Kingdom and the European Union will be like after the withdrawal. The British government had until March 2017 after the referendum to announce an official exit notice, and Theresa May submitted her country's official resignation to the EU on 29 March. Future economic and political rules between the EU and Britain will be negotiated under Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty. It is important that if the EU and Britain cannot agree on the different points within two years, the EU treaties will beco-me invalid for the United Kingdom. Article 50 has never been applied because no EU member state has ever wanted to leave the alliance. For this reason, the outcome of the negotiations is currently uncertain.

Book excerpt: This paper summarises the economic analyses of the potential impact of Brexit on the United Kingdom, European Union (EU) and euro area performed by members of and contributors to the Brexit Task Force, a group reporting to the International Relations Committee of the European System of Central Banks. The studies were carried out between 2017 and the initial months of 2019 and have been independently published by the authors. The aim of this Occasional Paper is to present the studies in an organic manner, highlighting common features and results. The different pieces of analysis employ a wide range of methods to (i) investigate the impact of Brexit on the economy and trade, (ii) assess possible scenarios for the bilateral relationship between the EU and the United Kingdom after Brexit and (iii) investigate the role of the main macroeconomic channels of transmission of the Brexit shock: trade (including the role of European value chains), migration and foreign direct investment. Other transmission channels such as financial linkages or uncertainty, and the financial stability implications of Brexit were not covered in the studies reviewed here. The results of these studies provide additional quantitative and qualitative foundations for some widely shared conclusions on the consequences of Brexit. The cost of Brexit in terms of gross domestic product loss is estimated to be significantly greater for the United Kingdom than for the euro area and the EU as a whole. This result is consistent across models, methodologies and scenarios and applies to both the trade and migration channels. Nevertheless, the results differ across individual Member States. Ireland would be particularly affected because of its close ties with the UK economy. Given the estimated costs of withdrawal, the closer the final relationship is to the United Kingdom's EU membership, the lower the macroeconomic costs of Brexit will be. The barriers to trade and investment between the EU and the United Kingdom that are expected to arise after Brexit will increase the costs of bilateral trade, as well as damaging inter-European production value chains and the allocation of capital across Member States.

Finding the right answer to these questions is incredibly difficult, since it is still unclear how Britain and the EU will regulate their relations when Brexit takes place; hence, all critical evaluations of the consequences can only be based on assumptions. By answering these questions, I will show that Brexit is most likely to harm the English and European economies. This is independent of whether a soft or a hard Brexit occur. However, it should be mentioned that at the time of writing this master thesis, the shape of the future EU-UK relations is unclear. The United Kingdom (UK) joined the European Community in 1973. Only two years later, there was a first referendum in which the British voted on the membership in the Community. Sixty-four percent of voters used their voting rights, and 67 percent of these voters spoke in favour of remaining in the European Community. Since then the British have seen the European cooperation only as having added value in the single market, but the goal of a political union has remained foreign to them. Due to the pressure of the UK Independence Party (UKIP), England's right-wing political party led by Nigel Farage, on British Prime Minister David Cameron to hold a referendum on the membership of the EU, Cameron criticized in his speech at Bloomberg in 2013, among other things, the high level of debt or declining trust in Europe's institutions. Despite well-developed models of economic integration within economic theory, there still lacks an analytical explanation of the mechanics of disintegration. For many years, integration was commonly perceived as a beneficial process, and while disintegration is not desirable, this led to normative bias in the research on regional integration. This book, therefore, makes an important contribution to theoretical and empirical developments of regional economic disintegration.
