Over the summer, a cacophony of proposals emanated from the UK government on what the country's exit from the European Union and the future relationship might look like. Some Brexiteers, including Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, David Davis, now seem to accept the idea that, although the United Kingdom is due to leave the EU on 29 March 2019, some sort of a transitional phase will be necessary. This has already been explicitly acknowledged by the European Council and the European Parliament and now appears to be on the cards on the EU side of the Channel. While as a matter of principle the idea of a transitional regime is pragmatic and sound, it will be very difficult to accomplish. With this in mind, Article 50 already sets out a withdrawal phase that can, and should, be considered 'transitional.' We argue that the only workable way forward now is an extension of the two-year negotiation period. The political and procedural complexities of possible bespoke transitional arrangements are a minefield and would necessitate a feat of legal acrobatics. This game may not be worth the candle.

What economic and political impacts will the Brexit have on the United Kingdom and on the European Union? Finding the right answer to these questions is incredibly difficult, since it is still unclear how Britain and the EU will regulate their relations when Brexit takes place; hence, all critical evaluations of the consequences can only be based on assumptions. By answering these questions, I will show that Brexit is most likely to harm the English and European economies. This is independent of whether a soft or a hard Brexit occur. However, it should be mentioned that at the time of writing this master thesis, the shape of the future EU-UK relations is unclear. The United Kingdom (UK) joined the European Community in 1973. Only two years later, there was a first referendum in which the British voted on the membership in the Community. Sixty-four percent of voters used their voting rights, and 67 percent of these voters spoke in favour of remaining in the European Community. Since then the British have seen the European cooperation only as having added value in the single market, but the goal of a political union has remained foreign to them. Due to the pressure of the UK Independence Party (UKIP), England’s right-wing political party led by Nigel Farage, on British Prime Minister David Cameron to hold a referendum on the membership of the EU, Cameron criticized in his speech at Bloomberg in 2013, among other things, the high level of debt or declining trust in Europe’s institutions. The British feel deceived by the European Union, as it draws more and more power and concludes new contracts without responding to the interests of the United Kingdom. Many residents of Britain wonder, as Cameron reports, why they cannot have their only reason for entering the EU, namely, a common market. The main purpose of the European Union is to ensure wealth. The EU is only a means to achieve affluence, democracy and stability. Britain is characterized by independence and openness, as well as by the passion of its people to defend their sovereignty. Cameron announced that there will be another referendum on the disposition of the UK in the EU.

To withdraw from the EU, the UK triggered Article 50 of Lisbon Treaty, which marked the beginning of a two-year negotiations' period between with the EU to agree on various issues related to terms of withdrawal and the UK-EU future relationship after Brexit. The British government has been facing serious challenges in the negotiations' process as first, The UK's and EU's objectives and interests have been different, and second, the British political parties and Members of Parliament have different positions and visions on the terms of withdrawal and their country's future relationship with Brussels. After 20 months of negotiations that were concluded with an agreement between the UK and the EU on terms of withdrawal and a general framework on their future relations. The future of this agreement and probably, the whole UK-EU future relationship is still unclear due to the persistent divisions among the British parties on one side, and the unwillingness of the EU to make further concessions in the negotiations with the UK on the other side. Relying on a qualitative methodology, mainly document analysis, this research studies the Brexit negotiations in light of these different interests and objectives and the parties' different positions on Brexit. The study's main conclusion is that this complex situation may lead the UK leaving the bloc without a deal that regulates the two parties' future relationship, which is a scenario that none of the parties wants due to its potential negative implications.
