Book Legendary Sports Writers of the Golden Age

Download or read book Legendary Sports Writers of the Golden Age written by Lee Congdon and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-05-05 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1920s—the Golden Age of sports—sports writers gained their own recognition while covering such athletes as Babe Ruth, Bobby Jones, Jack Dempsey, and Red Grange. The top journalists of the era were the primary means by which fans learned about their favorite teams and athletes, and their popularity and importance in the sports world continued for decades. Legendary Sports Writers of the Golden Age: Grantland Rice, Red Smith, Shirley Povich, and W. C. Heinz details the lives and careers of four sports-writing greats and the iconic athletes and events they covered. Although these writers established themselves during the 1920s, their careers extended well into the decades that followed. They reported on Jesse Owens, Joe Louis, Sandy Koufax, Arnold Palmer, and many other stars from the 1920s and beyond. Lee Congdon examines not only the lives and careers of Rice, Smith, Povich, and Heinz, but the distinctive writing style that each of them developed. Taken together, these four writers lifted sports reporting to heights that it is unlikely to reach again. This book brings to life the greatest era in sports history, as seen through the eyes of four legendary sports writers. Sports fans, historians, and those interested in sports journalism will all find this a fascinating and informative look at a time when the sports world was at its peak.

Book An East Tennessee Nightmare Lying in Wait

Download or read book An East Tennessee Nightmare Lying in Wait written by Babette Anton and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-11 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The men and women of Appalachia are strong and self-sufficient. In Roane County, Tennessee they most often have lived on and between the foothills of the Great Smokey Mountains. Times changed and as they did in this story, those who had become clearly isolated in their long-standing culture took change personally. They didn't like it. Leon and Rocky Houston are two such men, along with a large group of sympathetic followers. In the end that sympathy portrayed years of self-styled, anti-government lawsuits as well as the death of a sheriff's deputy and his retired, disabled ride-along officer. To believe the fifteen to twenty years of this rising storm ended in death for two men patrolling the public road "reserved" for the Houston clan came only as somewhat of a surprise. To believe that the storm clouds descended due to a school zone traffic violation five years before the killin's was at first a mystery. But a deep look at Rocky's 2001 courtroom "ticket tantrum" unveiled much more: Then and there he reportedly threw himself on the floor while yelling, "if you remember Waco you haven't seen anything yet." The comment's starkness unwinds within the book to explore the "sovereign citizens and militia mania" of the 90's and where that might have taken the brothers Houstons' thinking and need to kill "a few cops."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together in a unique perspective aspects of natural history dioramas, their history, construction and rationale, interpretation and educational importance, from a number of different countries, from the west coast of the USA, across Europe to China. It describes the journey of dioramas from their inception through development to visions of their future. A complementary journey is that of visitors and their individual sense making and construction of their understanding from their own starting points, often interacting with others (e.g. teachers, peers, parents) as well as media (e.g. labels). Dioramas have been, hitherto, a rather neglected area of museum exhibits but a renaissance is beginning for them and their educational importance in contributing to people’s understanding of the natural world. This volume showcases how dioramas can reach a wide audience and increase access to biological knowledge.
