When she was young, Lisa’s father was a mythical figure who was rarely present in her life. As she grew older, her father took an interest in her, ushering her into a new world of mansions, vacations, and private schools. Lisa found her father’s attention thrilling, but he could also be cold, critical and unpredictable. When her relationship with her mother grew strained in high school, Lisa decided to move in with her father, hoping he’d become the parent she’d always wanted him to be. Small Fry is Lisa Brennan-Jobs’s poignant story of childhood and growing up. Scrappy, wise, and funny, Lisa offers an intimate window into the peculiar world of this family, and the strange magic of Silicon Valley in the seventies and eighties.

Book Whisperers

Download or read book Whisperers written by J.H. Brennan and published by ABRAMS. This book was released on 2013-06-13 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “From the hair-raising to the eyebrow-raising, this is a scintillating account of meetings with spirits through history” (Mark Booth, New York Times–bestselling author). It may seem incredible, but as bestselling novelist and occult expert J.H. Brennan reveals in this eye-opening new history, there is a wealth of evidence to suggest that the disembodied voices of spirits may have subtly directed the course of human events. In Whisperers, Brennan explores how the “spirit world”—whether we believe in it or not—has influenced our own since the dawn of civilization. With a novelist’s flair and a scholar’s keen eye, Brennan details the supernatural affinities of world leaders from King Nebuchadnezzar to Adolf Hitler, showing how the decisions and policies of each have been shaped by their supernatural beliefs and encounters. Brennan also examines the impact of visions, from shamanism in native cultures to prophets such as Joan of Arc. Chronicling millennia of contact between the spirit world and our own, Whisperers presents an entirely new and different way to look at history. “Prolific Irish author and lecturer Brennan’s lifelong fascination with psychic phenomena fuels this comprehensive analysis of potential supernatural influences on history. . . . Certain hokum for skeptics, but the more open-minded will savor this chillingly convincing testimonial.” —Kirkus Reviews “J.H. Brennan is an expert storyteller who paints an often terrifying picture of how human destiny has regularly been changed forever by individuals convinced they were in communication with intelligences from beyond. In Whisperers, Brennan has created a unique and timely history of spirit voices that is both brilliant and utterly chilling.” —Andrew Donkin, coauthor of Illegal

Book The Routledge Research Companion to Popular Music Education

Download or read book The Routledge Research Companion to Popular Music Education written by Gareth Dylan Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-01-20 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular music is a growing presence in education, formal and otherwise, from primary school to postgraduate study. Programmes, courses and modules in popular music studies, popular music performance, songwriting and areas of music technology are becoming commonplace across higher education. Additionally, specialist pop/rock/jazz graded exam syllabi, such as RockSchool and Trinity Rock and Pop, have emerged in recent years, meaning that it is now possible for school leavers in some countries to meet university entry requirements having studied only popular music. In the context of teacher education, classroom teachers and music-specialists alike are becoming increasingly empowered to introduce popular music into their classrooms. At present, research in Popular Music Education lies at the fringes of the fields of music education, ethnomusicology, community music, cultural studies and popular music studies. The Routledge Research Companion to Popular Music Education is the first book-length publication that brings together a diverse range of scholarship in this emerging field. Perspectives include the historical, sociological, pedagogical, musicological, axiological, reflexive, critical, philosophical and ideological.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following on from the success of 'The Non-League Groundhopper's Diary' keen amateur photographer and Cambridge United fan Alan Burge has delved into his personal archives to produce another volume of his memoirs. For many years Alan has combined his two passions by visiting non-league grounds up and down the country and taking photographs whilst watching football and collecting badges, programmes and other bits of nostalgia. As with his first collection Alan has written a few words to accompany the photos from his visit. Again there are some grounds that are sadly no longer with us, and some grounds that he just happened to discover whilst on his travels, and like any self-respecting 'groundhopper' no matter that there wasn't a game on, he took photos anyway. In this book there is an added bonus as Alan has grasped new technology with both hands and invested in a 'drone' which sees his photography moving to a new level.

Book The Play of Character in Plato s Dialogues

Download or read book The Play of Character in Plato s Dialogues written by Ruby Blondell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-06-27 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book attempts to bridge the gulf that still exists between 'literary' and 'philosophical' interpreters of Plato by looking at his use of characterization. Characterization is intrinsic to dramatic form and a concern with human character in an ethical sense pervades the dialogues on the discursive level. Form and content are further reciprocally related through Plato's discursive preoccupation with literary characterization. Two opening chapters examine the methodological issues involved in reading Plato 'as drama' and a set of questions surrounding Greek 'character' words (especially ethos), including ancient Greek views about the influence of dramatic character on an audience. The figure of Sokrates qua Platonic 'hero' also receives preliminary discussion. The remaining chapters offer close readings of select dialogues, chosen to show the wide range of ways in which Plato uses his characters, with special emphasis on the kaleidoscopic figure of Sokrates and on Plato's own relationship to his 'dramatic' hero.
