New energy deposition, transmission, and reflection coefficients for electrons incident on plane slabs for angles of 0, 30, 60,7 5, and 89.9 deg and energies of 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0,4 .0, 5.0, 6.0, and 10.0 MeV are presented, and methods for their use in electron dose calculations are developed. A method for electron dose calculations using the "straight-ahead" approximation is also developed and the various methods are compared and found to be in good agreement. Accurate and approximate methods of calculating bremsstrahlung dose are also derived and compared.

Book excerpt: Bremsstrahlung production by energetic electrons stopping in a typical thick space vehicle wall has been calculated. Two incident electron energies were considered, 6 Mev and 4 Mev. The spectrum of emergent X-rays from behind the shield attenuation factor was calculated and compared with an experimental determination of the attenuation with essentially the same shield. The calculation and experiment agree to within a factor of about two or three. These results indicate that bremsstrahlung production could represent a radiation hazard to manned flight of some consequence. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written by a group of authors and provides a systematic dis cussion of questions related to bremsstrahlung in many-particle systems. A number of new results have recently been obtained in this area which require a fundamental revision of the previously existing traditional concepts of bremsstrahlung. This ap plies both to complicated atoms containing a large number of electrons and to the additional bremsstrahlung in a system of many particles forming a medium. In fact, the traditional approach was rigorously applicable only either to isolated "structureless" particles (e. g. , to the emission of an electron on a proton) or to par ticles radiating in the limit of extremely high frequencies. Polarization effects (either polarization of an atom itself by an incident particle or polarization of the medium surrounding an atomic particle) have a significant effect in the practically important optical and x-ray frequency ranges and sometimes even predominate. The first effect has come to be known as polarization atomic (or dynamic) bremsstrahlung and the second, as polarization transition bremsstrahlung. The au thors of this book use a single term: polarization bremsstrahlung. It seems that, in contrast to earlier ideas on the subject, bremsstrahlung during collisions of heavy incident particles with atoms is by no means small and is entirely caused by polar ization effects.

Book excerpt: Differential cross sections for emission of bremsstrahlung x-rays by relativistic electrons of energy from 10 keV to 10 MeV are calculated and tabulated as a function of incident electron energy, ratio of x-ray energy to electron energy, and angle of x-ray emission to incident electron direction, for nuclei of Z=1 and Z=22. The differential cross-sections integrated over angle and x-ray energy are also presented. From these x-ray spectra, ratios of x-ray transmission through various metal attenuators of several thicknesses and absorption in 1 inch Pilot B scintillators are calculated as a function of electron energy and angle between electron and detector.

Book excerpt: Since the discovery of the corpuscular nature of radiation by Planck more than fifty years ago the quantum theory of radiation has gone through many stages of development which seemed to alternate between spectacular success and hopeless frustration. The most recent phase started in 1947 with the discovery of the electromagnetic level shifts and the realization that the exist ing theory, when properly interpreted, was perfectly adequate to explain these effects to an apparently unlimited degree of accuracy. This phase has now reached a certain conclusion: for the first time in the checkered history of this field of research it has become possible to give a unified and consistent presen tation of radiation theory in full conformity with the principles of relativity and quantum mechanics. To this task the present book is devoted. The plan for a book of this type was conceived during the year 1951 while the first-named author (J. M. J. ) held a Fulbright research scholarship at Cambridge University. During this year of freedom from teaching and other duties he had the opportunity of conferring with physicists in many different countries on the recent developments in radiation theory. The comments seemed to be almost unanimous that a book on quantum electrodynamics at the present time would be of inestimable value to physicists in many parts of the world. However, it was not until the spring of 1952 that work on the book began in earnest.

Book excerpt: For ten days at the end of September, 1987, a group of about 75 scientists from 21 different countries gathered in a restored monastery on a 750 meter high piece of rock jutting out of the Mediterranean Sea to discuss the simulation of the transport of electrons and photons using Monte Carlo techniques. When we first had the idea for this meeting, Ralph Nelson, who had organized a previous course at the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for Scientific Culture, suggested that Erice would be the ideal place for such a meeting. Nahum, Nelson and Rogers became Co-Directors of the Course, with the help of Alessandro Rindi, the Director of the School of Radiation Damage and Protection, and Professor Antonino Zichichi, Director of the "Ettore Majorana" Centre. The course was an outstanding success, both scientifically and socially, and those at the meeting will carry the marks of having attended, both intellectually and on a personal level where many friendships were made. The scientific content of the course was at a very high caliber, both because of the hard work done by all the lecturers in preparing their lectures (e. g. , complete copies of each lecture were available at the beginning of the course) and because of the high quality of the "students", many of whom were accomplished experts in the field. The outstanding facilities of the Centre contributed greatly to the success. This volume contains the formal record of the course lectures.
