Form is good and there is a rich Damask fragrance. With only 25 petals this summer, it opened nicely and was a splendid rose to cut. Edith 'willkie will apparently have about the same average ht. Growth and bore pointed apricot buds, opening reddish apricot, with 40 petals and a delightful fragrance. This year's bloom averaged inches across. We also want to say a good word for marigold, orange sunset, a selection from the Sunset Giants. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Breeze Hill News, Vol. 3: March 1938 Of a clearer color, Wayside's new patented Augusta was checked as deep carmine-pink, with a slight orange flush around a purplish eye. The introducers call it cherry-red and say there is considerable orange at first; either description would do. The plan t-growth was much like that of Columbia, with many stems branching freely from the base, barely 2 feet tall, and blooming right through from mid-july into October. Notes made September 20 showed the plants covered with bloom, and the fall color was real cherry-red. The foliage was healthy. We are fond of the older Camillo Schneider, for while the florets are barely an inch in diameter and the heads are of only fair size, the color is brilliant scarlet-crimson, with an eye so faint that it is not noticeable. A newcomer to the garden last year was General Chanzy, whose medium-sized florets made 2% feet of height with clean foliage. It seems worth watching another year at least. The last of our red family was the reliable Leo Schlageter, whose medium-sized florets of bright brick-red were really brilliant, and while the old plants were of only medium height, the foliage was better than average, and the color was real. Rosea and Eva Rathke, and from the resultant seedlings selected one which promised to carry on with the rich darkness Of bloom Of Eva Rathke on a much better plant, and, in addition, it bloomed a second time, something very few Weigelas do. Plants were propagated and one Of them sent to Breeze Hill in 1937. This plant is now a 6-foot Shrub, as much through at the base, and well clothed with attractive foliage, much smaller than most hybrid Weigelas. It comes into bloom here about June I nearly two weeks later than the early hybrids. Slender buds Of deep garnet open to trumpet-like flowers Of the same rich color, changing in a few days to Soft Silvery rose. This coloring combines nicely with the large white anthers and stigmas topping pinkish filaments and style. A peculiar scent adds to its desirability in the small garden. Bloom is carried in generous clusters Of a dozen or more. Flowers are much larger than those Of the somewhat similarly colored Eva Rathke. Important to Breeze Hill is the fact that the plants pro duce a cheering crop Of autumn bloom, at its best during late September and early October. Our color description will probably not agree with the originator's description, as Mr. Cumming talks Of ruby carmine buds and Soft carmine - crimson flowers. However, hardly any two plantsmen see flower colors alike. We ran through a pile Of catalogues for a description Of W., Eva Rathke (one Of the parents Of Bristol Ruby). In New Jersey it was ruby; in Pennsylvania, crimson; in Maryland, carmine; and in Massachusetts, brownish red. So, garnet or carmine crimson, it's a lovely flower on a splendid plant - and it repeats! A patent is pending. Bristol Ruby will be available to the public next spring.
