Book excerpt: The International Year of Pulses celebrated in 2016 magnified the public focus and consumer perception on human health, environmental aspects, crop production and novel product development benefits of pulses. The gluten-free and plant protein movements have also increased interest in pulse utilization. The common dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) among pulses is the most economically and widest ecologically adapted crop species used for food by large populations. Nowadays, dry beans top the list of pulse crops accounting on average for ~38 and 32% of global pulse growing area and production, respectively. Protein production from kidney beans requires about 18, 12, 10, 10 and 9 times less land, fertilizer, pesticide, water and fuel, respectively compared to producing the same amount of protein from beef.This book focuses on breeding aspects including new cultivars, production and post-harvest practices, and investigations that can lead to the development of high quality grain and functional foods, and nutraceutical products from beans. It also provides an overview of the crop management practices, technology progress and impacts favoring the best possible clean and sustainable crop production. Bean breeding is highlighted form the European perspective including the preservation/conservation of local gene pools. Bean production and quality improvement is a continuous process, particularly in major bean producing and consuming countries. The socioeconomic impact is considerable in countries where beans are traditionally part of the staple daily diet. However, application of novel technologies in improving nitrogen fixation, integrated disease management, and post-harvest storage ensures sustainable bean production and quality. The quality of bean types close to the site of its original domestication provides an outlook on their resilience and potential as a genetic resource and future food products. Current knowledge of bean health benefits, bioactive compounds, bioactive peptides and phenolics are important for development of novel functional foods. Beans can be used in many forms; as a natural coagulant, in metabolic disease prevention and other common bean-based food products, where their current market availability is explored. The multiple attributes of beans including cost, sustainability, commercial availability in varied forms and types ensure its extensive and expanding use in the development of healthy eating habits that can reduce healthcare and societal costs. This book should give plant scientists, nutritionists, health professionals, chemists and industry professionals interested in beans useful and up-to-date information to advance the field.

However, the diversity of neglected plant species provides a large genetic resource that could significantly contribute to broadening the biodiversity of trait-desired crops for novel value chains, sustainable development and food security. The uptake of new plant breeding techniques, notably genome editing, as well as ‘omic’ tools, are now accelerating translation of basic research and facilitating the exploration of orphan crops. These advancements also give rise to public and politic engagement discussions to maximize socio-economic impact. Given that the greatest need for food and nutritional security is in growing economies, issues of food sovereignty and sustainability of their food systems become front-and-centre. There is now an exceptional opportunity to tackle some of the major current challenges in agriculture, including climate change, sustainable cropping systems, food quality, and nutritional security through broadening research in wild relatives of crops and on orphan species. This Research Topic seeks to showcase research on neglected plants using advanced molecular technologies (e.g. genome sequencing, 'omics', etc) and new plant breeding approaches, methods, and tools. This Research Topic will also discuss the challenges and opportunities arising when modern breeding techniques are applied for translational research.

Lastly, it analyzes the successes, limitations and prospects for the development of insect-resistant cultivars of rice, maize, sorghum and millet, cotton, rapeseed, legumes and fruit crops, and highlights strategies for management of insect biotypes that limit the success and durability of insect-resistant cultivators in the field. Arthropod pests act as major constraints in the agro-ecosystem. It has been estimated that arthropod pests may be destroying around one-fifth of the global agricultural production/potential production every year. Further, the losses are considerably higher in the developing tropics of Asia and Africa, which are already battling severe food shortage. Integrated pest management (IPM) has emerged as the dominant paradigm for minimizing damage by the insects and non-insect pests over the last 50 years. Pest resistant cultivars represent one of the most environmentally benign, economically viable and ecologically sustainable options for utilization in IPM programs. Hundreds of insect-resistant cultivars of rice, wheat, maize, sorghum, cotton, sugarcane and other crops have been developed worldwide and are extensively grown for increasing and/or stabilizing crop productivity. The annual economic value of arthropod resistance genes developed in global agriculture has been estimated to be greater than US$ 2 billion Despite the impressive achievements and even greater potential in minimizing pest- related losses, only a handful of books have been published on the topic of host-plant resistance to insects. This book fills this wide gap in the literature on breeding insect- resistant crops. It is aimed at plant breeders, entomologists, plant biotechnologists and IPM experts, as well as those working on sustainable agriculture and food security.

Book excerpt: Grain legumes, together with quinoa and amaranth (pseudocereals) and other crops are attractive candidates to satisfy the growing demand for plant protein production worldwide for food and feed. Despite their high value, many protein crops have not been adequately assessed and numerous species are underutilized. Special attention has to be paid to genetic diversity and landraces, and to the key limiting factors affecting yield, including water deficiency and other abiotic and biotic stresses, in order to obtain stable, reliable and sustainable crop production through the introduction and local adaptation of genetically improved varieties. Legumes, the main protein crops worldwide, contribute to the sustainable improvement of the environment due to their ability to fix nitrogen and their beneficial effects on the soil. They play a key role in the crop diversification and sustainable intensification of agriculture, particularly in light of new and urgent challenges, such as climate change and food security. In addition, the role of legumes in nutrition has been recognized as a relevant source of plant protein, together with other benefits for health. Chapters dealing with common bean, lupine, soybean, lentil, cowpea and Medicago are included in this book. Most contributions deal with legumes, but the significant number of papers on different aspects of quinoa gives an idea of the increasing importance of this protein crop. Pseudocereals, such as quinoa and amaranth, are good sources of proteins. Quinoa and amaranth seeds contain lysine, an essential amino acid that is limited in other grains. Nutritional evaluations of quinoa indicate that it constitutes a source of complete protein with a good balance among all of the amino acids needed for human diet, and also important minerals, vitamins, high quality oils and flavonoids. Other protein crops also included in this book are hemp, cotton and cereals (maize, wheat and rice). Although cereals protein content is not high, their seeds are largely used for human consumption. In this book are included articles dealing with all different aspects of protein crops, including nutritional value, breeding, genetic diversity, biotic and abiotic stress, cropping systems or omics, which may be considered crucial to help provide the plant proteins of the future. Overall, the participation of 169 authors in 29 chapters in this book indicates an active scientific community in the field, which appears to be an encouraging reflect of the global awareness of the need for sustainability and the promising future of proteins crops as a source of food and feed.
