Book The Social Life of Greylag Geese

Download or read book The Social Life of Greylag Geese written by Isabella B. R. Scheiber and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-08-29 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The flock of greylag geese established by Konrad Lorenz in Austria in 1973 has become an influential model animal system and one of the few worldwide with complete life-history data spanning several decades. Based on the unique records of nearly 1000 free-living greylag geese, this is a synthesis of more than twenty years of behavioural research. It provides a comprehensive overview of a complex bird society, placing it in an evolutionary framework and drawing on a range of approaches, including behavioural (personality, aggression, pair bonding and clan formation), physiological, cognitive and genetic. With contributions from leading researchers, the chapters provide valuable insight into historic and recent research on the social behaviour of geese. All aspects of goose and bird sociality are discussed in the context of parallels with mammalian social organisation, making this a fascinating resource for anyone interested in integrative approaches to vertebrate social systems.

Download or read book Restoring America s Wildlife 1937 1987 written by Harmon Kallman and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fittingly, the Act's chief sponsors were a Senator from Nevada, Key Pittman, and a Representative from Virginia, A. Willis Robertson. The Pittman-Robertson Act, as it came to be called, sped through Congress and was signed into law by President Franklin Roosevelt on September 2, 1937. From a modest beginning, the Pittman-Robertson program has grown with the economy and the human population of our country. By now it has channeled nearly $1.7 billion in Federal excise tax receipts, augmented by some $600 million from the States, into activities to restore wildlife. The projects include State acquisition of acreage needed to bring wildlife back, research into wildlife requirements and problems, active management of habitats, and development of scientific ways to enable wildlife and people to share our land in harmony. The program has strengthened State governments and built wildlife management into a respected profession.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giant Canada geese (Branta canadensis maxima) are year-around residents in the Huron River Valley of southeastern Lower Michigan. The flock originated from maxima stock that were either released or escaped from private waterfowl collections during the mid-1920's. A study was made during the spring and summer of 1974 to determine the flock's breeding range, to quantitatively describe the nesting habitat, to estimate the size of the breeding population, its productivity, and survival of goslings to fledging.
