Book Nighttime Breastfeeding

Download or read book Nighttime Breastfeeding written by Cecília Tomori and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nighttime for many new parents in the United States is fraught with the intense challenges of learning to breastfeed and helping their babies sleep so they can get rest themselves. Through careful ethnographic study of the dilemmas raised by nighttime breastfeeding, and their examination in the context of anthropological, historical, and feminist studies, this volume unravels the cultural tensions that underlie these difficulties. As parents negotiate these dilemmas, they not only confront conflicting medical guidelines about breastfeeding and solitary infant sleep, but also larger questions about cultural and moral expectations for children and parents, and their relationship with one another.

Book Development and Evaluation of the Breastfeeding and Sexuality Impact Scale BASIS

Download or read book Development and Evaluation of the Breastfeeding and Sexuality Impact Scale BASIS written by Emily A. Sevick and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: Currently, the research that is available on the impact of breastfeeding and sexuality has targeted White pregnant or postpartum women with little emphasis on non-White and non-pregnant women. The majority of women make infant feeding decisions based on preconceptions established before they even become pregnant. Some women may choose not to breastfeed because of the potential impact on sexuality. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a scale to assess non-pregnant Black women's perceptions of how breastfeeding might impact their sex lives. Methods: The study utilized a two-phase mixed methods approach. Phase 1 responses were collected using a semi-structured interview guide based on the Theory of Planned Behavior. Phase 2 utilized a cross-sectional online survey that was driven by the Theory of Planned Behavior and informed by phase 1 themes. Results: A total of 12 participants completed phase 1 protocols and a total of 135 participants completed phase 2 protocols. Participants articulated a variety of themes regarding their thoughts, feelings, and beliefs about breastfeeding and the impact that breastfeeding may have on a woman's sex life. The mean score on the BASIS was 2.13 ± .38. An exploratory Factor Analysis, face validity, and predictive capacity together demonstrated that the BASIS did not yield a Cronbach's Alpha level above .80 to represent adequate reliability. Conclusion: Future researchers should collect data regarding the impact of breastfeeding on sex life with the validated BASIS. Doing so will provide researchers a better understanding of what educational materials and interventions should be created in order to assist non-pregnant Black woman who want to breastfeed in the future overcome impacts on their sex lives that are perceived to be bothersome.

Book Mothers Sex And Sexuality

Download or read book Mothers Sex And Sexuality written by Michelle Walks and published by Demeter Press. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mothers, Sex, and Sexuality talks about things not normally dared spoken out loud—the interconnectedness and conflict between our parental and sexual selves, the taboo of the sexual mother, and why it matters so much to shatter it. What is it about the sexual mother that is incompatible, and at times even disturbing? Why are we threatened by maternal sexuality? And what does this tell us about the structures of gender and power that govern our bodies? Mothers, Sex, and Sexuality presents a rigorous academic analysis of the myriad ways in which the sexual/maternal divide affects women, birthing people, and those of us who assume or are ascribed the title "mother". We examine the way we as mothers talk to our daughters about sex, the way we talk about sex in a cultural context, and the deafening silence around sex in a medical system that overlooks maternal sexuality. We return repeatedly to the impact of both Christianity and Hinduism on the mother as someone to be revered but tightly controlled. We embrace the lost eroticism of mothering and hail breastfeeding as a sexual maternal practice, arguing for a new, broader, feminist understanding of sexuality. We discuss the way fat mothers destabalise the heteronormative maternal model, the way kinky queers are reconfiguring the sexual/maternal divide through erotic role-play, and we explore the strange, intense, and romantic domestic relationship that springs up between mothers and nannies—two heterosexual women trapped together in a homoerotic triangulation of need and desire. In a titillating climax we revel in the sexual maternal as embodied through performance art, poetry, installations, and comedy, disrupting queer readings of bodies as we are invited to both fuck, and fuck with, the maternal. This book boldly provides both a challenge to the patriarchal constraints of motherhood and a racy road-map escape route out of the sexual-maternal dichotomy.

Book The Surgeon General s Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding

Download or read book The Surgeon General s Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For nearly all infants, breastfeeding is the best source of infant nutrition and immunologic protection, and it provides remarkable health benefits to mothers as well. Babies who are breastfed are less likely to become overweight and obese. Many mothers in the United States want to breastfeed, and most try. And yet within only three months after giving birth, more than two-thirds of breastfeeding mothers have already begun using formula. By six months postpartum, more than half of mothers have given up on breastfeeding, and mothers who breastfeed one-yearolds or toddlers are a rarity in our society. October 2010 marked the 10th anniversary of the release of the HHS Blueprint for Action on Breastfeeding, in which former Surgeon General David Satcher, M.D., Ph. D., reiterated the commitment of previous Surgeons General to support breastfeeding as a public health goal. This was the first comprehensive framework for national action on breastfeeding. It was created through collaboration among representatives from medical, business, women's health, and advocacy groups as well as academic communities. The Blueprint provided specific action steps for the health care system, researchers, employers, and communities to better protect, promote, and support breastfeeding. I have issued this Call to Action because the time has come to set forth the important roles and responsibilities of clinicians, employers, communities, researchers, and government leaders and to urge us all to take on a commitment to enable mothers to meet their personal goals for breastfeeding. Mothers are acutely aware of and devoted to their responsibilities when it comes to feeding their children, but the responsibilities of others must be identified so that all mothers can obtain the information, help, and support they deserve when they breastfeed their infants. Identifying the support systems that are needed to help mothers meet their personal breastfeeding goals will allow them to stop feeling guilty and alone when problems with breastfeeding arise. All too often, mothers who wish to breastfeed encounter daunting challenges in moving through the health care system. Furthermore, there is often an incompatibility between employment and breastfeeding, but with help this is not impossible to overcome. Even so, because the barriers can seem insurmountable at times, many mothers stop breastfeeding. In addition, families are often unable to find the support they need in their communities to make breastfeeding work for them. From a societal perspective, many research questions related to breastfeeding remain unanswered, and for too long, breastfeeding has received insufficient national attention as a public health issue. This Call to Action describes in detail how different people and organizations can contribute to the health of mothers and their children. Rarely are we given the chance to make such a profound and lasting difference in the lives of so many. I am confident that this Call to Action will spark countless imaginative, effective, and mutually supportive endeavors that improve support for breastfeeding mothers and children in our nation."--Page v.

Book At the Breast

Download or read book At the Breast written by Linda M. Blum and published by Beacon Press (MA). This book was released on 1999 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the Breast is a fascinating look at how women in different economic and ethnic groups respond to the 1990s version of idealized motherhood, particularly breastfeeding. Discouraged by the medical community from the 1950s to the 1970s, breast-feeding regained esteem in the 1980s. and now most doctors take the line that "breast is best, " In fact, as Linda Blum demonstrates, popular magazines and the news media frequently report the health benefits of breast milk for infants, so that breastfeeding is now considered the sine qua non of good mothering, and often the "bond" that cements the mother/child relationship. As she explores the history and reasons for this shift, Blum reveals that a discussion about the seemingly private and individual practice of breastfeeding is really a larger conversation about motherhood, sexuality, class, and race. She interviews three groups of women -- the white, middle-class mothers of La Leche League and black and white working-class mothers -- to discover that breastfeeding can be, by turns, a deeply gratifying experience of embodiment, an anxiety-evoking reminder of uncertain respectability and diminished expectations, and an undesirable practice mat carries reminders of the painful history of relations between blacks and whites in the U.S.For mothers considering their roles and for readers interested in questions of feminism. class, and race. At the Breast offers a penetrating view of our society from a unique angle.
