Alterations in DNA such as mutations and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have been correlated with outcomes and provide for novel therapeutic approaches. These NGS analyses have also revealed the extensive contributions of epigenetic mechanisms such as histone modifications, non-coding RNA and alternative splicing. All of these changes together contribute to alterations in proteome. Newer assays that allow greater stability and analytical consistency are emerging. The occasion was marked by the bringing together in Warsaw of a broad spectrum of cell and molecular biologists from around the world under the auspices of the Global MCBN UNESCO. At the conclusion of that week-long celebration it became clear that Polish cell and molecular biology had come of age in terms of its depth, vigor and impact on the global scene. At the suggestion of Professor Angelo Azzi, chairman of Global MCBN UNESCO, we considered the challenge of compiling a volume in the Molecular and Cell Biology Updates tMCBU) Series that would address the molecular basis of cancer and its therapy, but one that would additionally serve to highlight Polish contributions to this field of research. We accepted the challenge presented to us by Professor Azzi and are grateful to all contributors of the present volume for making this a pleasant and stimulating project. We requested each contributor to present his personal perspective of respective topics. As a consequence, we hope that each contribution has a distinctive individual flavor which reflects the role played by individual research groups in advancing science.

Understanding the genetic information for the expression of these antigens has been recently advanced leading to preparation of molecularly engineered reagents for use in vaccination, serum assays, and immunizations for novel antibody production. In the anti-breast cancer antibody field the availability of molecular engineering approaches to humanize murine antibodies has induced intense interest in the creation of less immunogenic antibody forms that are now available for clinical testing. Clinical studies using anti-breast murine antibody continue to be carried out and are presented at this meeting establishing a base line for safety and efficaciousness in imaging and immunotherapy that it is hoped will be superseded by the humanized forms. Basic immunology and immunochemistry studies in breast cancer are also included in this workshop that demonstrate the fast pace at which this research is advancing in many laboratories worldwide.
