Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistical extrapolation is required to predict extreme loads, associated with a target return period, for offshore wind turbines. In statistical extrapolation, "short-term" distributions of the load random variable(s) conditional on the environment are integrated with the joint probability distribution of environmental random variables (from wind, waves, current etc.) to obtain the so-called "long-term" distribution, from which long-term loads may be obtained for any return period. The accurate prediction of long-term extreme loads for offshore wind turbines, using efficient extrapolation procedures, is our main goal. While loads data, needed for extrapolation, are obtained by simulations in a design scenario, field data can be valuable for understanding the offshore environment and the resulting turbine response. We use limited field data from a 2MW turbine at the Blyth site in the United Kingdom, and study the influence of contrasting environmental (wind) regimes and associated waves at this site on long-term loads, derived using extrapolation. This study also highlights the need for efficient extrapolation procedures and for modeling nonlinear waves at sites with shallow water depths. An important first step in extrapolation is to establish robust short-term distributions of load extremes. Using data from simulations of a 5MW onshore turbine model, we compare empirical short-term load distributions when two alternative models for extremes--global and block maxima--are used. We develop a convergence criterion, based on controlling the uncertainty in rare load fractiles, which serves to assess whether or not an adequate number of simulations has been performed. To establish long-term loads for a 5MW offshore wind turbine, we employ an inverse reliability approach, which is shown to predict reasonably accurate long-term loads, compared to a more expensive direct integration approach. We show that blade pitching control actions can be a major source of response variability, due to which a large number of simulations may be required to obtain stable tails of short-term load distributions, and to predict accurate ultimate loads. We address model uncertainty as it pertains to wave models. We investigate the effect of using irregular nonlinear (second-order) waves, compared to irregular linear waves, on loads for an offshore wind turbine. We incorporate this nonlinear irregular wave model into a procedure for integrated wind-wave-response analysis of offshore wind turbines. We show that computed loads are generally somewhat larger with nonlinear waves and, hence, that modeling nonlinear waves is important is response simulations of offshore wind turbines and prediction of long-term loads.

Book excerpt: Civil structures located in the coastal or offshore regions are subjected to continuous wind and wave loads. Structural reliability and survivability could be significantly reduced, especially during extreme weather events. Detailed analyses of wind and wave characteristics, interactions between wind and wave loads and structures, and structural performances under such loads are essential to be carried out. Depending on the locations of the structures, both environmental conditions and structural designs can vary with each other significantly. Structures located in the coastal region could experience combined wind and wave events during hurricanes, and coastal structural assessment is usually performed under extreme weather events with a high return period to inspect the structural survivability. Meanwhile, waves usually get dissipated while arriving at the shorelines by some resilience options. However, offshore structures located in deep seas are subjected to higher wind and more violent waves with strong correlations. The complicated and harsh environmental conditions at deep seas could inevitably result in more significant structural dynamic responses. With years of service, fatigue damages could be critical and affect structural safety and serviceability. A general numerical framework in structural performance assessment for both coastal and offshore structures under wind and wave loads is developed in this dissertation. Two typical coastal and offshore structures are discussed. For coastal residential buildings, a combination of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation and finite element modeling (FEM) is implemented to evaluate the building vulnerability during extreme weather events. Furthermore, the effect of breakwaters serving as the coastal protective measure on building safety is also investigated. For floating offshore wind turbines, both statistical models and machine learning models are applied to evaluate fatigue damage accumulations considering uncertainties from realistic environmental conditions. The canonical vine (C-vine) copula model is established to model the multivariate dependency structure for on-site wind and wave-related environmental parameters. Two surrogate models, including the Kriging model and the artificial neural network (ANN), are used to efficiently predict short-term fatigue damages at critical locations. A novel physics-informed deep learning model is also established to efficiently obtain structural dynamic responses under different disturbances.

As these wind farms are typically located in water depths less than 30 meters, the effect of breaking waves on these structures is of great concern to design engineers. This research investigation examines many of the practical considerations and alternative ways of estimating breaking wave forces. A survey of existing European wind farms is used to establish a realistic range of basic design parameters. Based upon this information a parametric study was pursued and a series of realistic design scenarios were evaluated. Comparisons include the sensitivity to the wave force model as well as to analytical and numerical wave theories used to evaluate the wave kinematics. In addition, the effect of different kinematics stretching techniques for linear waves is addressed. Establishing whether the bathymetry will induce spilling or plunging wave breaking is critical. Spilling wave breaking can be addressed using existing wave and wave force theories; however for plunging wave breaking an additional impact force must be introduced. Dimensionless design curves are used to display pertinent trends across the full range of design cases considered. This research study provides insight into the evaluation of the maximum breaking wave forces and overturning moment for both spilling and plunging breaking waves as a function of bottom slope.
