Book excerpt: When I was a little boy, I allowed my thoughts to carry me away from the extreme poverty in which I lived to a place where I knew things would be better. My seven sisters and I were orphaned and left on the streets of Detroit. We were determined to stay together at any cost! The price we paid was extreme poverty for many years. We were constantly on the run, living wherever we could find a place to sleep. Although the times were hard, we made it. I went into business for myself selling candy at the age of eight, and we soon had enough money to buy a house. It was in an inner-city neighborhood, but it was home. I worked hard and had little time to play. It was during those lean times that I made up my mind to do something great with my life. I decided someday to become wealthy and help others do the same. In my early years, I always had a job and several businesses. Even at lunchtime during school I would sneak away and cut a customer's lawn or sweep out a basement. I learned how to make a dollar at a very young age, but I didn't learn how to manage it for many years. I would become wealthy and then lose it all.

Book excerpt: "With job opportunities in decline for youth with no postsecondary degree, and college completion rates especially for students of color stagnating, a high school diploma is no longer enough. To solve this large-scale global problem. High school must be completely redesigned and reinvented providing all students real opportunity with both equity and excellence. P-TECH (Pathways in Technology Early College High School) has done just that by combining public high schools and community colleges in partnership with employers, providing both opportunity and support for all students, regardless of income, race or any screen for admission. Unlike many school models, this innovative and effective approach has spread across the US and around the world, eliminating barriers to replication by engaging all stakeholders. The first P-TECH, opened in a low-income Brooklyn neighborhood, across from a public housing project, and served 100% students of color. It has become the model for school reform across over a dozen US states and nearly twenty countries. Praised by President Obama, governors in red and blue states, and heads of nations, its story is told in this book through the personal stories of students who have destroyed the myths about which students can succeed. Their stories demonstrate that all students, if given the opportunity and support, can reach great heights in high school, college, and career"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Citing recent studies that point to a breakdown of community in modern American life, Prof. Vander Broek turns to the advice Paul gave to the ancient Christian community in Corinth that was undergoing remarkably similar problems. Writing principally for pastors and educated lay persons, the author demonstrates how careful attention to a biblical book can yield rich resources for modern church life. Written in a clear and readable style, the book will prove useful to congregations seeking to restore and strengthen the bonds of Christian community." --Paul J. Achtemeier, Union Theological Seminary (Virginia) "Vander Broek draws upon his knowledge of both the Corinthian church of the first century and the mainline Protestant churches of the twenty-first century and finds a common thread. Vander Broek recognizes that both Paul and artists of today have a vision of an intimate community beyond the barriers that humans create for themselves. In this book, he brings the work of a first-century Paul and twenty-first-century poets, painters, and writers together and shows us how they attempted to realize their vision of community. It is fresh and though provoking." --Thomas A. Boogaart, Western Theological Seminary

Book excerpt: For some unknown reason, Peter Altschul was born totally blind. He grew up in a working-class town where, with the help of his persistent mother, he broke through barrier after barrier, determined to live a full life. After attending a private school that initially turned him away-simply because he was blind-Peter details how he discovered his gift for music, eventually playing percussion in the orchestra, marching band, and jazz ensemble at Princeton University. But it was only after Peter graduated from college that it became evident he would need a guide dog. Heidi, a Weimaraner with a large repertoire of barks, howls, and grunts, would assist Peter for the next eight years through the halls of New England Conservatory, where he eventually obtained a masters degree in music composition. Peter relays how he blazed a unique professional trail while simultaneously overcoming obstacles; managed his uneasy relationship with music; and embraced his unexpected entrance into an unfamiliar and romantic world. He also provides an unforgettable glimpse into the wonderful ways his five guide dogs supported him on his journey from urban bachelorhood to the light of love. Breaking Barriers shares a compelling account of one mans journey through life as he and each of his specially trained dogs learned to trust each other, ultimately melding into a smooth working team that tackled the worldtogether.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, it is nearly impossible to talk about the best basketball players in America without acknowledging the accomplishments of incredibly talented black athletes like Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, and Kobe Bryant. A little more than a century ago, however, the game was completely dominated by white players playing on segregated courts and teams. In Breaking Barriers: A History of Integration in Professional Basketball, Douglas Stark details the major moments that led to the sport opening its doors to black players. He charts the progress of integration from Bucky Lew—the first black professional basketball player in 1902—to the modern game played by athletes like Stephen Curry and LeBron James. Although Stark focuses on the official integration of basketball in the late 1940s, the story does not end there. Over the past 60-plus years, black athletes have continued to change the game of basketball in terms of style, social progress, and marketability. Spanning the early 1900s to the present day, no other book features such a comprehensive examination of the key events and figures that led to the integration of professional basketball. In Breaking Barriers, these crucial steps in the history of the sport are placed within the larger context of American history, making this book an essential addition to the literature on sports and race in America.

Book The Habits And Thinking Of The Rich

Download or read book The Habits And Thinking Of The Rich written by Betty Johnson and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-05-14 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered why some people seem to get rich easily, while others are destined for a life of financial struggle? Is the difference found in their education, intelligence, skills, timing, work habits, contacts, luck, or their choice of jobs, businesses, or investments? The shocking answer is: None of the above! The advice is based on the belief that we are so emotionally attached to our beliefs on all four subjects that discussing them in mixed company could easily lead to confrontation.Fair enough, most of us would probably agree with that. The real question though, is "when and how did we become so emotional about money?" The Habits And Thinking Of The Rich suggests our financial success is predetermined from birth and shows us what to do to break through mental barriers and acquire the habits and thinking of the rich. The premise of the book is simple: you can learn all the tips to invest, save or build wealth in the world, but if you're not mentally prepared to own and maintain that wealth. - unless your "finisher" is set above the amount - the money will go as soon as it arrives. Although even that description may sound a bit "warm and fuzzy" to some, I find this book full of practical and easy-to-implement concepts, all aimed at establishing mental report.

Download or read book Breaking Boundaries written by Johan Rockstrom and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2021-05-11 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An accessible summary of the planetary emergency and how to turn things around, from authors whose work is the focus of a new Netflix documentary narrated by David Attenborough. On the brink of a critical moment in human history, this book presents a vision of “planetary stewardship” – a rethinking of our relationship with our planet – and plots a new course for our future. The authors, whose work is the subject of a new documentary due to air on Netflix summer 2021, reveal the full scale of the planetary emergency we face – but also how we can stabilize Earth’s life support system. The necessary change is within our power, if we act now. In 2009, scientists identified nine planetary boundaries that keep Earth stable, ranging from biodiversity to ozone. Beyond these boundaries lurk tipping points. In order to stop short of these tipping points, the 2020s must see the fastest economic transition in history. This book demonstrates how societies are reaching positive tipping points that make this transition possible: groups such as the schoolchildren led by Greta Thunberg demand political action; countries are committing to eliminating greenhouse gas emissions; and one tipping point has even already passed – the price of clean energy has dropped below that of fossil fuels. The story is accompanied by unique images of Earth produced by Globaïa, the world’s leading visualizers of human impact.
