Book excerpt: The epic story of the Boer War and Harry 'Breaker' Morant: drover, horseman, bush poet - murderer or hero? Most Australians have heard of the Boer War and of Harry 'Breaker' Morant, a figure who rivals Ned Kelly as an archetypal Australian folk hero. But Morant was a complicated man. Born in England and immigrating to Queensland in 1883, he established a reputation as a rider, polo player and poet who submitted ballads to The Bulletin and counted Banjo Paterson as a friend. Travelling on his wits and the goodwill of others, Morant was quick to act when appeals were made for horsemen to serve in the war in South Africa. He joined up, first with the South Australian Mounted Rifles and then with a South African irregular unit, the Bushveldt Carbineers. The adventure would not go as Breaker planned. In October 1901 Lieutenant Harry Morant and two other Australians, Lieutenants Peter Handcock and George Witton, were arrested for the murder of Boer prisoners. Morant and Handcock were court-martialled and executed in February 1902 as the Boer War was in its closing stages, but the debate over their convictions continues to this day. With his masterful command of story, Peter FitzSimons takes us to the harsh landscape of southern Africa and into the bloody action of war against an unpredictable force using modern commando tactics. The truths FitzSimons uncovers about 'the Breaker' and the part he played in the Boer War are astonishing - and finally we will know if the Breaker was a hero, a cad, a scapegoat or a criminal.

Book Scapegoats of the Empire

Download or read book Scapegoats of the Empire written by George Witton and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-11-20 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scapegoats of the Empire is an autobiography by George Witton. Witton was a lieutenant in the Bushveldt Carbineers in the Boer War in South Africa during the early 20th century. Excerpt: "Life in camp at Beira was almost a repetition of Langwarrin, being principally occupied in attending to and exercising the horses. On my arrival in camp I was instructed by Captain Dallimore to act as squadron-quartermaster-sergeant; my duties were to see that rations and forage were drawn daily and all camp equipment kept in order. Occasionally I went out on the veldt when exercising the horses; there appeared to be plenty of game about, and whenever a small buck rose up close to us there would be a hue-and-cry after it. Sometimes we would succeed in running it down in the long grass."

Book Shoot Straight You Bastards

Download or read book Shoot Straight You Bastards written by Nick Bleszynski and published by Random House Australia. This book was released on 2011-11-30 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating insight into Breaker Morant and the question of morality and human life. The question of "The Breaker's" innocence is still being fiercely debated more than a century after Lieutenant Harry Morant and Lieutenant Peter Handcock were shot on a lonely veldt outside Pretoria at dawn on 27 February, 1902, by a British military firing squad. Shoot Straight, You Bastards! is a universal account of greed, ambition and the power of the political machine that crushes anyone who gets in the way. In much the same way that Bruce Beresford's award-winning feature film Breaker Morant captured the popular imagination, Shoot Straight, You Bastards! is an explosive read, as controversial an event today as it was 101 years ago. In every war there is a character like Morant - a rebellious spirit who ends up on the wrong side of the "great cause". This updated edition includes an appendix containing dramatic new evidence that Kitchener gave orders to "take no prisoners". Expert legal opinion supporting the Breaker's innocence and a strong campaign to secure a proper judicial review combine here in a story Australians have waited more than a century to read!

Book Bushveldt Carbineers

Download or read book Bushveldt Carbineers written by George Witton and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A war without pity on the South African veldt George Witton was a member of the Bushveldt Carbineers-a mounted, highly mobile unit trained to hunt down its Boer counterparts of the Commandos during the Boer War at the turn of the 20th century. Theirs was no 'gentleman's war' which took account of for fair play and the rules of war-it was a 'kill or be killed' existence of ambushes, night attacks and summary executions in which neither side could claim non-participation. War became a personal business for Witton and his fellow Carbineers-Morant and Handcock-as brother officers were found murdered and brutalised and prisoners were caught bearing their personal effects. Matters came to a head with the infamous courts-marshal of some of the Bushveldt Carbineers and the execution of some and imprisonment of others in a scandal that rocked the British Empire and struck to the core of the relationship between the mother country and one of its most loyal colonies.

Book excerpt: The incredible true story of one of the most extraordinary and inspirational prison breaks in Australian history. New York, 1874. Members of the Clan-na-Gael - agitators for Irish freedom from the English yoke - hatch a daring plan to free six Irish political prisoners from the most remote prison in the British Empire, Fremantle Prison in Western Australia. Under the guise of a whale hunt, Captain Anthony sets sail on the Catalpa to rescue the men from the stone walls of this hell on Earth known to the inmates as a 'living tomb'. What follows is one of history's most stirring sagas that splices Irish, American, British and Australian history together in its climactic moment. For Ireland, who had suffered English occupation for 700 years, a successful escape was an inspirational call to arms. For America, it was a chance to slap back at Britain for their support of the South in the Civil War; for England, a humiliation. And for a young Australia, still not sure if it was Great Britain in the South Seas or worthy of being an independent country in its own right, it was proof that Great Britain was not unbeatable. Told with FitzSimons' trademark combination of arresting history and storytelling verve, The Catalpa Rescue is a tale of courage and cunning, the fight for independence and the triumph of good men, against all odds.

Book excerpt: Outback Survival is a timeless, practical run down on everything you need to know to survive in the outback. Bob Cooper's incredible bushcraft skills have been developed through more than 25 years of experience in Australia's harsh outback. He has picked up tools of survival from the experiences of living with traditional Aboriginal communities, instructing with Special Forces Units, lecturing with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Service on desert survival in the Mexican Desert, delivering wilderness lessons in the UK and learning the skills of the bushmen of the Kalahari Desert in Botswana. Bob has put his own lessons to the test, dropping himself off in the 42C heat of the Australian desert with only a map and soap box sized survival kit, no food, water or sleeping gear, and a 10 day walk across 160km of rough terrain back to safety. He did this alone and showed that with the right knowledge of the land, you can survive in even the harshest of conditions. The outback of Australia is one of the most unforgiving regions of the world, but Bob is committed to protecting and enhancing the experience people have when venturing out into the bush.

Book Carry a Big Stick

Download or read book Carry a Big Stick written by Tim Ferguson and published by Hachette Australia. This book was released on 2013-09-24 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A funny, poignant and inspirational story of widely acclaimed comedian, writer and producer, Tim Ferguson. Tim Ferguson was a star of the international comedy circuit. Along with Paul McDermott and Richard Fidler he was part of the edgy, provocative and very funny Doug Anthony Allstars (DAAS). In 1994 they were at the height of their powers, performing in a season at the Criterion Theatre on Piccadilly Circus. The three mates, who began busking on the streets of Canberra a decade earlier, had achieved their ambition to become the self-styled rock stars of comedy. Then, all of a sudden, Tim woke up one morning and his whole left side wouldn't work. He'd had a lurking suspicion that something was wrong and after more episodes he went to a doctor thinking he'd be told to change his diet and get more sleep. It wasn't so simple. An eventual diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) meant an end to the frenetic, high-energy life he was living. Carry a Big Stick is a chance for Tim to tell his story. He wants to make people laugh but also give inspiration to all the people doing it hard. A lot of people keep MS to themselves because it's invisible. In Tim's case, he has the stick. 'It's such a visible sign that something's happened; it's just easier if people know.' Carry a Big Stick meanders through Tim's life, and explains how the boy who went to nine schools in 13 years got used to saying, 'Hi, I'm the new kid'. It will detail his ambitions to become an actor and how the Doug Anthony Allstars were born and went on to become what Rolling Stone called 'The 3 amigos from hell'. Diagnosis changed a lot of things but Tim's quick wit and sense of humour weren't affected. This inspiring memoir shows us that you can laugh in the face of adversity.

  • Pages : 184 pages

Download or read book Breaker Morant written by Frederic Morley Cutlack and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australian horse-breaker and balladist Harry Morant was executed in South Africa in 1902 after service in the Boer War. Breaker Morant shows that Morant 's shooting of Boer prisoners was probably the result of a command inciting his patrol to vengeance. Lord Kitcherner, who signed Morant's death warrant, was possibly appeasing the German Emperor, since a German missionary also died ... but Morant had advised this missionary to defend himself from the dangerous Boers. Undoubtedly the brave Morant suffered questionable British justice. This book contains a selection of his ballads.

Book Myths and Fictions

Download or read book Myths and Fictions written by Biderman and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-22 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Myths and Fictions — the third in a series of books on comparative philosophy and religion — is a collection of original essays, none previously published, on the theory and the actuality of myths and fictions in the different cultures of the world. Through all the essays there runs the question of the relation of literal truth to truth conceived in other ways or dimensions. Taken as a whole, the book makes a serious attempt to get beyond the confines of any single culture and enter into the mythical imagination of the ancient Hindus, Chinese, Hebrews and Christians, and by this act of imagination to escape (in Italo Calvino's words) "the limited perspective of the individual ego, not only to enter into selves like our own but to give speech to that which has no language..."
