Book Breadfruit Or Chestnut

Download or read book Breadfruit Or Chestnut written by Bonnie Thomas and published by After the Empire: The Francophone World and Postcolonial France. This book was released on 2006 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breadfruit or Chestnut? examines gender construction comparatively across the fiction of contemporary writers of Guadeloupe and Martinique. In particular, it explores the construction of gender identity by six authors--three male and three female--who have never been brought together in a study of this issue. Rather than following the trend of studying theory and cultural identity in the central male writers and of studying "women's writing" in the works of the female writers, Thomas expertly blurs these traditional boundaries in order to present an unexplored aspect of identity. In addition to illuminating women's conception of gender, this work examines the male equivalent and how each gender observes and perceives the other. Breadfruit or Chestnut? not only contextualizes the primary literature, but also draws on contemporary theoretical debates surrounding feminism, subjectivity, and postcolonialism. The combination of literary and historical tools of analysis allows for a deeper probing into gender relations in the French Caribbean.

Book excerpt: Leonara is a first in francophone Caribbean literature: neither fiction nor biography, this book by sociologist and Creole-culture advocate Dany Bebel-Gisler has elements of both novelistic and documentary style. It has been likened to the Latin-American testimonio genre (testimony novel). The real-life Leonara- model for and subject of this book- told Bebel-Gisler that "in this book made up of my words, it is my very self that is present. You have written the story just as I have told it" In the course of her life, Leonara has witnessed, from her perspective as the mother of a large family, the passage of Guadeloupe from colony to departement of France; from the hard-scrabble subsistence agriculture of the rural poor to the subsudized consumer economy of France's overseas departements today. Along the way she offers witty and pungent observations on language, politics, sex, and religion.

Book Reimagining Resistance in Gis le Pineau s Works

Download or read book Reimagining Resistance in Gis le Pineau s Works written by Lisa Connell and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-10-20 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As one of the most prominent voices from and about the French Caribbean, Gisèle Pineau has garnered significant scholarly attention; however, this interest has culminated in precious few volumes devoted entirely to the author and her work. In response to this lack of in-depth critical attention, Reimagining Resistance in Gisèle Pineau’s Works brings together a range of perspectives from both sides of the Atlantic and across the Pacific to explore the unique ways in which Gisèle Pineau’s works redefine the concept of resistance, particularly as it relates to gender, race, history, and Antillean identity. As this volume ultimately demonstrates, resistance holds up a mirror to the political, economic, and cultural forces that have shaped the past, construct the present, and build the future. It argues that Pineau’s characters open the narrative frame for reading them and move us beyond the categories of the wholly defiant or the inherently complicit. Above all, as they invite us to reimagine resistance, they expose our expectations and hopefully shift our understanding about what it means to rise and to fall in a world we seek to call our own.
