Book Brazil Today and Tomorrow Classic Reprint

Download or read book Brazil Today and Tomorrow Classic Reprint written by L. E. Elliott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brazil Today and Tomorrow Everything that has been done to bring Brazil into the race of nations is the work of the last hundred years; the most intense period of rapid building since the establishment of the republic has lasted less than thirty years, for in that time has taken place the great acquisition of private fortunes in the industrial regions of Brazil. Much of the civic building, creation of pub lic utilities, establishment of transportation lines, has been due to foreign capital and technical skill, but Brazil herself has contributed no small share of enter prise during the last fifty years; descendants of Portu guese fidalgo: have taken up engineering, agriculture, commerce and city-making with energy and intelligence which is not always given a due share of recognition by those onlookers who think that all development of Latin America must come from without. In Brazil much progress, much creation, has come from within, and will come to an even larger degree in the future with improvement in technical education; but the country is enormous, the centres of population have always lain on or near the sea border, and interior Brazil, the virgin heart of South America, remains practically untouched. The two great interior states of Matto Grosso and Goyaz cover an area of more than two million square kilometres; they make up one-fourth of the whole Brazilian territory, and Brazil covers half of South America: but this huge heart-shaped wedge in the cen tre of the continent has no more than half a million population. This is not because the country is tropical or worthless, but because it is unopened and unknown. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Brazil and the River Plate 1870 76 Classic Reprint written by William Hadfield and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brazil and the River Plate, 1870-76 The publication of another volume relating to "Brazil and the River Plate" may appear almost superfluous, after the previous one issued in 1868, with only two years' interval occurring between that and the date of the present narrative, which is indeed more or less supplementary. Events, however, in those countries follow each other in such rapid succession as to yield every year a record of public interest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brazil and the River Plate in 1868: Showing the Progress of Those Countries Since His Former Visit in 1853 The commercial tendencies of Brazil and the Platine States are most liberal, and their policy is the very Opposite Of that pursued under the exclusive domination Of Portugal and Spain. The Empire, not long Since, received the approval Of all civilised nations for its decree Opening up the waters Of the noble Amazon to free commerce, and the unrestricted navigation Of the upper riverine streams will be one of the chief advan tages the victory Of the allies in the present war will confer upon mankind. Book The Brazilians and Their Country Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Brazilians and Their Country Classic Reprint written by Clayton Sedgwick Cooper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Brazilians and Their Country It goes almost without saying that a book record ing impressions, with some attempt at interpretation, written by a North American of any people in South America, lacks what Mr. Clemons would call the uncon scious absorption that a lifetime of residence in a coun try affords. Nevertheless in a period when territorial barriers are being so rapidly dissolved and when national and social conditions are being so deeply stirred by the greatest human conflict of all the ages, isolation and localism are no longer possible for any thoughtful or patriotic citizen. To-day truly, the whole world is a stage and all men are players, and any attempt to make any part of this world citizenship more clear or meaningful finds a new audience of interested beholders. It is my hope that this book may add something to the knowledge and understanding of a people who share with us a large and very important portion of the Western Continent, but of whose existence we, as a nation, have been in the past strangely unfamiliar. My indebtedness to Brazilians, to foreigners resident in Brazil, and to a wide circle of men and women who have helped me in many ways in connection with this book, is gratefully acknowledged. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In a Changing Brazil This mutual lack of knowledge and, it must be admitted, mutual apathy toward such knowledge, resulted from factors I try to make plain in this book. If the Brazilians, certain of the superiority of their achievements, found it unnecessary to investigate and comprehend ours and the motivations for them, no less were we indifferent to theirs, and for the same reason. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brazil and the Monroe Doctrine The proclamation of the Republic found the writer in the very flower of his twenty years of age. And he here confesses that he did not escape the malign influence of this fascina ting reading. The author of the Its'usdo Americana had shown himself in this work so deeply inspired in patriotism, had had so many apprehensions aroused as to the destinies of Brazil, which he considered to be about to fall into dismemberment, and he had so convinced himself as to the complete loss of that national unity which had been the great foundation of all the political greatness of the Continent, that not a few of his readers forgot that he himself was a monarchist, while they themselves were being led to believe that, fully as much as the German peril, in view of the concentration of colonists in the south, a new American peril now reared its head over the fertile regions of the Amazon.
