Book Coffee Production and Trade in Latin America

Download or read book Coffee Production and Trade in Latin America written by Peter J. Buzzanell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coffee Production and Trade in Latin America: May 1979 Latin America is the primary source of the world's coffee production and exports. Two countries - Brazil and Colombia - have been the world's leading exporters. Their production and exportable supply levels traditionally have had a significant influence on the world market, and this situation remains true today. However, in recent years within these and other coffee producing and exporting countries of the region certain trends have emerged that deserve review and analysis. These include the economic dependency on coffee as the primary source of foreign exchange, the stress on technological innovations in production, shifts in export markets, and the role of interregional coffee policies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coffee: From Plantation to Cup; A Brief History of Coffee Production and Consumption I have endeavored to tell the story of coffee in a practical way, so as to make the information valuable alike to consumers and dealers. I have been induced to add to the innumerable com pany Of books from the fact that there seemed to be a want for a work which, besides furnishing statistical and historical matter relative to the coffee-plant, should give the reader a thorough knowledge of the characteristics of the world's coffee supply, and the mode of preserving and preparing the coffee-bean so as to best secure all those qualities which make coffee the favorite beverage with most Of the civilized nations of the earth. My reliance has been chiefly upon twenty years' experience as a dealer, and such in formation as was to be gathered from a trip around the world. I have to acknowledge my indebtedness to many books for facts re garding coffee culture, and historical matter relating thereto, and also to a large circle of business acquaintances for valuable statis tical information. To mention them specifically is hardly pos sible, and would be of little interest to the general reader. It is, however, but just that I should here recognize the many courtesies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Valorisation of Coffee in Brazil: A Lecture Delivered on 29th January 1907 Before the Members of the Antwerp Society for the Study of Colonial Questions When I arrived at San Paulo, the beautiful capital of the Brazilian State of the same name, about seventeen years ago, to take charge of a group of factories situated about an hour's railway journey from the city, the latter had approximately inhabitants. The landlord of the hotel at which I stayed, who had attained the age of fifty, spent the whole of the day working in his office. Leaving the hotel sometimes at about five o'clock in the morning and returning about ten o'clock at night, I always found to my great astonishment mine host still at work. Book Production Consumption and Price Trends of Coffee Classic Reprint

Download or read book Production Consumption and Price Trends of Coffee Classic Reprint written by Kathryn Hulen Wylie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Production, Consumption and Price Trends of Coffee The soil considered best for coffee growing is volcanic ash that is rich, deep, moist, friable, and well-drained. Ideal temperatures range from 60° to 80° F., and rainfall should average about 70 inches annually, distributed throughout the year. The plants will grow at all altitudes up to the frost zone, but the better flavored coffees are said to thrive best in regions from to feet above sea level. The most famous coffee soil in Brazil is a red clay, 3 or 4 feet thick, called terra roxa. As the coffee plantations have been recently extended, plants have been set out on progressively thinner soils until some observers believe the economically profitable limit has been almost reached. A contrary opinion, however, is that, as far as natural con ditions are concerned, coffee production can be expanded enormously. The principal areas are now located on plateaus to feet in elevation, with a mean annual temperature of 70° F. And yearly rainfall of from 40 to 60 inches. The rains come in late August and continue through February, and dry weather prevails during the harvesting season from May to August. Colombia's coffee soils are partly of volcanic origin and almost always dark, or black, in color, those of Antioquia being noted partie ularly for their flavor-giving qualities. The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, one of the best growing regions, has steep slopes for drainage and deep fertile soils; the top layer is a dark-brown clay with much humus, and the subsoil is heavy red clay with a high potash and iron content. Most of the coffee is planted between and feet above sea level. Mists and clouds, rising from the lowlands during the rainy season, drench the trees and also protect them from the noon sun. Most of the rain comes at midday, or in the afternoon, with no heavy downpours. There is a long dry period for ripening and harvesting.
