Book excerpt: In anticipation of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, this celebration of Brazil's football obsession captures every angle of the game, the players, and the fans of the most beautiful game on earth. Having photographed football in Brazil for two decades, no one understands the country's passion for the sport better than Christopher Pillitz. From Brazil's sun-kissed beaches to its densely populated favelas, Pillitz reveals the sport as Brazil's religion. His bold and brightly colored photographs show players of every age and walk of life. They take readers from enormous stadiums and prison yards to the tops of tall buildings and a deep-sea oil platform; across countless streets, alleys, and highways; even inside a local seminary where longrobed monks display incredible agility playing in their cassocks. While he captures stylish kicks, athletic headers, swaying dribbles and passes, and the samba and capoeira behind the incredible moves, Pillitz also shows us the wild excitement of the colorful, eccentric fans, and, of course, he reveals the gentle side of the beautiful game--the many women footballers and fans who enjoy the sport as much as their male counterparts. Timed to coincide with Brazil's hosting of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, this absorbing and thrilling collection will help new and seasoned fans understand what football truly represents to the country's people and its culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Head back to paradise with another tantalizing collection of images from Brazilian photographer Joaquim Nabuco. In more than 150 color and black and white images, the stunning women of Brazil grace equally beautiful tropical landscapes, including locations with mountains, jungles, beaches, and historical sites. There are even photographs that couple models with Brazil's indigenous wildlife like jaguars and macaws. By eliciting rich and radiant responses from these "Braziliangels," Nabuco is able to introduce the diverse characteristics of women from different regions of Brazil. From the mysterious beauties of the south to the spicy women of the north, this collection makes it very clear why Brazil is known as the home of supermodels. Quotes from Brazilian artists and poets about the beauty of their nation's fairer sex confirm this. But Nabuco's models come from all walks of life, some are actresses, TV personalities, journalists, biologists, and fashion designers, and all celebrate the paradise that is Brazil.

Book Marcados

Download or read book Marcados written by Claudia Andujar and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Claudia Andujar (1931) was born in Switzerland and has lived in Brazil since 1955. In contact with the Yanomami Indians of Roraima, she spent extended periods in their company of making photographic essays that make up a chapter in the history of Brazilian photography. The series consists of 85 pictures of Yanomami made between 1981 and 1983, during a trip to survey the situation. As the Yanomami do not respond to name, a 19th century method was chosen for the identification of indigenous peoples: a photograph of the individual with a number attached to the body. These records, now transformed into a book, being published in Portuguese and English, include, in addition to photos, an itinerary of visits and portions of the report of the photographer on the communities studied. Claudia Andujar this beautiful work confirms the intrinsic relationship between photographic art and reality.

Book Media and the Image of the Nation during Brazil s 2013 Protests

Download or read book Media and the Image of the Nation during Brazil s 2013 Protests written by César Jiménez-Martínez and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-04-30 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the struggles over the mediated construction and projection of the image of the nation at times of social unrest. Focussing on the June 2013 protests in Brazil, it examines how different actors –authorities, activists, the national media, foreign correspondents– disseminated competing versions of ‘what Brazil was’ during that pivotal episode. The book offers a fresh conceptual approach, supported by media coverage analysis and original interviews, that demonstrates the potential of digital media to challenge power structures and establish new ways of representing the nation. It also highlights the vulnerability of both ‘old’ and ‘new’ media to forms of inequality and disruption due to political interferences, technological constraints, and continuing commercial pressures. Contributing to the study of media and the nation as well as media and social movements, the author throws into sharp relief the profound transformation of mediated nationhood in a digital and global media environment.
