Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about violence in the Brazilian city of Sao Luis. It describes how people think about and negotiate dangerous encounters - vital and disturbing experiences that, when they go wrong, yield moral failure, humiliation, and death. Brazilians, like people elsewhere, worry about the perils of coming face-to-face with the wrong person, at the wrong time, under the wrong circumstances. The book discusses two conceptually linked forms of perilous face-to-face encounters: Carnival, a bacchanalian festival, and briga, a potentially lethal street confrontation. When playing becomes fighting, Carnival's samba, fueled by the controlled venting of dangerous passions, gives way to the explosive pas de deux of the street fight. Sao-luisenses tell vivid, sometimes terrifying, stories of verbal and physical confrontations. Their narratives, based on cultural models of Carnivals and brigas, highlight the vulnerability of the self to humiliation by others and the vulnerability of moral controls to one's own hostile emotions. The book argues that this double sense of social and psychological vulnerability is a product of Brazilian interpersonal relations, which are profoundly marked by the arbitrary exercise of power and the stifling of resentment in subordinates. Culture here consists not of shared symbols but of shared quandaries. The author suggests that Brazilian street fighting is an alarm bell - an inarticulate representation of pressing but poorly understood social and psychological dilemmas. Violence in Sao Luis may therefore be a desperate attempt to understand and come to grips with the very resentment, rooted in the city's harsh social transactions, that engenders it.

Download or read book Afro Paradise written by Christen A Smith and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2016-03-15 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tourists exult in Bahia, Brazil, as a tropical paradise infused with the black population's one-of-a-kind vitality. But the alluring images of smiling black faces and dancing black bodies masks an ugly reality of anti-black authoritarian violence. Christen A. Smith argues that the dialectic of glorified representations of black bodies and subsequent state repression reinforces Brazil's racially hierarchal society. Interpreting the violence as both institutional and performative, Smith follows a grassroots movement and social protest theater troupe in their campaigns against racial violence. As Smith reveals, economies of black pain and suffering form the backdrop for the staged, scripted, and choreographed afro-paradise that dazzles visitors. The work of grassroots organizers exposes this relationship, exploding illusions and asking unwelcome questions about the impact of state violence performed against the still-marginalized mass of Afro-Brazilians. Based on years of field work, Afro-Paradise is a passionate account of a long-overlooked struggle for life and dignity in contemporary Brazil.

Book The Anti Black City

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important new ethnographic study of São Paulo’s favelas revealing the widespread use of race-based police repression in Brazil While Black Lives Matter still resonates in the United States, the movement has also become a potent rallying call worldwide, with harsh police tactics and repressive state policies often breaking racial lines. In The Anti-Black City, Jaime Amparo Alves delves into the dynamics of racial violence in Brazil, where poverty, unemployment, residential segregation, and a biased criminal justice system create urban conditions of racial precarity. The Anti-Black City provocatively offers race as a vital new lens through which to view violence and marginalization in the supposedly “raceless” São Paulo. Ironically, in a context in which racial ambiguity makes it difficult to identify who is black and who is white, racialized access to opportunities and violent police tactics establish hard racial boundaries through subjugation and death. Drawing on two years of ethnographic research in prisons and neighborhoods on the periphery of this mega-city, Alves documents the brutality of police tactics and the complexity of responses deployed by black residents, including self-help initiatives, public campaigns against police violence, ruthless gangs, and self-policing of communities. The Anti-Black City reveals the violent and racist ideologies that underlie state fantasies of order and urban peace in modern Brazil. Illustrating how “governing through death” has become the dominant means for managing and controlling ethnic populations in the neoliberal state, Alves shows that these tactics only lead to more marginalization, criminality, and violence. Ultimately, Alves’s work points to a need for a new approach to an intractable problem: how to govern populations and territories historically seen as “ungovernable.”

Book Peace and Violence in Brazil

Download or read book Peace and Violence in Brazil written by Marcos Alan Ferreira and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This a very welcome and long awaited book that helps us put in perspective the state of peace and violence in Brazil. This book is relevant to anyone engaged with Brazil and its social dynamics, as well as peace researchers interested in Southern perspectives of peace and violence." -Roberta Holanda Maschietto, Post-Doctoral Researcher, Centre for Social Studies, University of Coimbra, Portugal "This book seeks to bring an interesting discussion on security issues with a special debate on violence in Brazil. It is a new and significant contribution that offers to the audience an overview focused on violent actors, organized crime, and its dynamics regarding the Brazilian context." -Marcial A. G. Suarez, Professor of Political Science at Universidade Federal Fluminense, Brazil This edited volume examines how the multiple manifestations of social violence in Brazil impacts the building of a peaceful society. The chapters reflect on the role of state, organized crime and civil society. They provide a unique analysis of how the Brazilian state deals with criminal violence, but also finds challenges to comply with Sustainable Development Goal 16, to interdict police violence, and to provide an efficient gun policy. The book shows the agency of civil society in a violent society, in which NGOs and communities engage in key peace formation action, including advocacy for human rights and promoting arts. The overall aim of this book is to advance the research agenda regarding the intersections between peace, public security, and violence, under the lens of peace studies. In Brazil, the challenges to peace differ markedly from areas in regular conflict. Marcos Alan Ferreira is an Associate Professor at Universidade Federal da Paraíba (UFPB), Brazil, Visiting Professor at Universidad Núr, Bolivia, and Research Fellow at Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq).

Book Feminicide in the state of Roraima

Download or read book Feminicide in the state of Roraima written by Mónica Montana Martínez Ribas and published by EdUFRR. This book was released on 2020-04-02 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was developed on the subject of gender violence. Its goal is to analyze the historically violent social context for women in the State of Roraima, as well as the expressive exponential increase on the rates of violence against women and several forms, as to verify the invisibility of the female gender before public institutions. Its methodological approach is descriptive and qualitative. The first chapter approaches the tolerance displayed by society when it comes to domestic violence and sexism, as well as the connivance of the State to its occurrence. The lack of effectiveness of Human Rights dictated in legal milestones as well as the lack of accountability of the National States on the subject is also discussed. The second chapter discusses the legal devices for the protection of women in Brazil, with special attention to the Bill of Law 11.340, commonly known as the Maria da Penha Law, and its impact on how Brazil deals with domestic and familial violence. It also analyzes the forms of gender, domestic, and familial violence. The third chapter analyzes the history of violence against women, through an analysis of the historical terminology used to describe it, as well as demonstrating the growing rates of feminicide and violence against women which have been previously mentioned.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When lives are dominated by hunger, what becomes of love? When assaulted by daily acts of violence and untimely death, what happens to trust? Set in the lands of Northeast Brazil, this is an account of the everyday experience of scarcity, sickness and death that centres on the lives of the women and children of a hillside "favela". Bringing her readers to the impoverished slopes above the modern plantation town of Bom Jesus de Mata, where she has worked on and off for 25 years, Nancy Scheper-Hughes follows three generations of shantytown women as they struggle to survive through hard work, cunning and triage. It is a story of class relations told at the most basic level of bodies, emotions, desires and needs. Most disturbing - and controversial - is her finding that mother love, as conventionally understood, is something of a bourgeois myth, a luxury for those who can reasonably expect, as these women cannot, that their infants will live.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book examines the political economy of violence in the Rio de Janeiro favela of Rocinha. Based on over two years of research and residence in the community, it offers an ethnographic account of how entangled forms of violence become essential forces shaping everyday social relations in the favela. The first part of the book shows how armed actors--drug traffickers and police--use spectacle to perform power. Yet despite the prevalence of physical violence, the favela has itself become a valuable global brand, consumed in disembodied fashion through media and in embodied fashion through tourism. Exploring media and favela tourism, the second part of the book demonstrates how the social relationships that arise from ongoing favela violence have a direct relationship to the market economy"--Provided by publisher.
