Book excerpt: Sieges are a military tactic as old as time but all too often they are lost within the study of a whole war or campaign when the skill, judgment, tactical awareness and weapon deployment required in such warfare is as essential as any other form of battle. This is recognized in this extensive study of seventeen examples selected for their diversity and their place in the evolution of siege warfare. The author skillfully interweaves the dramas and human interest elements into his account of the event. William Seymour served in the Scots Guards and Special Forces in the Second World War. He is the author of several books on military history, the British monarchy, and the exploration of the East Indies.

Book The Encyclopedia of Nineteenth century Land Warfare

Download or read book The Encyclopedia of Nineteenth century Land Warfare written by Byron Farwell and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2001 with total page 936 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late Byron Farwell served as an engineer in the British forces of World War II and was an author of at least seven books on various aspects of military history. In this encyclopedia, a labor of love intended for both scholars and general readers, entries include information on wars, revolutions, battles, sieges, spies, soldiers, technical military terms, weapons, and other aspects of 19th-centruy wars and military life. The length of an entry does not necessarily correspond to its importance. Some lesser conflicts and minor personalities are given more space, because information is not readily available elsewhere; and conversely, if information on a topic is widely available, the entry is short. Small bandw images enhance the text. A selected bibliography is included at the end of the volume. Indexing, at least by country or general topic would have improved this otherwise carefully prepared reference. Annotation copyrighted by Book News Inc., Portland, OR

Book Historical Dictionary of Afghan Wars Revolutions and Insurgencies

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Afghan Wars Revolutions and Insurgencies written by Ludwig W. Adamec and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its foundation in 1747, Afghanistan has seen seemingly limitless wars waged by the central government to consolidate its control over the country as well as rampant tribal warfare. There have been three Anglo-Afghan Wars (1839-42, 1878-79 and 1919); a Russian-backed Marxist government in Kabul battled a coalition of tribal armies, which was soon followed by the Taliban takeover. Now, in the midst of a war against terrorism, the United States is backing another central government in yet another sporadic struggle. All the information currently available on the endless chain of wars stretching over two and a half centuries is traced in this book. It consists of the American involvement in Afghanistan since October 2001 as well as individual campaigns, including tactics and logistics of skirmishes, the weapons used, and biographical entries on the significant leaders involved in the battles. Extensive analysis of regional and ideological divisions within the country and the external forces that have brought around conflict in this remote, mountainous region, in addition to a chronology of the encounters, an extensive bibliography, and numerous maps and illustrations make this crucial volume indispensable.

Book excerpt: "It is a book that will prove invaluable not only to the student of the history of ancient and modern times but also to the ordinary newspaper reader."--Dundee Courier. Zurakow (Ottoman War). In 1676, John Sobieski, with 10,000 Poles, was besieged by 200,000 Turks and Tartars, under Ibrahim Pasha (Shaitan). Having 63 guns, Sobieski made a sturdy defence, and by constant sorties inflicted enormous loss on the besiegers. At last, being unable to make any impression on the defence, and finding his army wasting away, Ibrahim consented to treat, and withdrew his forces from Polish territory. The Turks lost enormous numbers during the siege; the Poles lost 3,000.
