  • Release : 2011
  • ISBN : 9988647905
  • Pages : 982 pages

Download or read book Ewe St mme written by Jakob Spieth and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2011 with total page 982 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ewe of Ghana, Togo and Benin have been one of the most documented ethnic groups in West Africa, given their encounters with the German, French and British colonial administrations. In 1906, Jakob Spieth, a German Bremen Missionary, published Die Ewe-Stamme. Die Ewe-Stamme is one of the most comprehensive treatises on the history, religion, economic life, traditional social structure, and, indeed, the entire spectrum of everyday life of the Ewe. Published over 100 years ago the book had limited circulation and became increasingly rare to the extent that it almost became a deified piece of work and source of classified knowledge. Additionally, Die Ewe-Stamme was published in German and old non-standard and colloquial Ewe languages. It is hoped this translation of Die Ewe-Stamme into English and contemporary Ewe might create a revival of interest amongst researchers, enhance the understanding for the traditional Ewe culture and become reading material in schools and universities.

Book No Magic Bullet

    Book Details:
  • Author : Allan M. Brandt
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA
  • Release : 1985
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 278 pages

Download or read book No Magic Bullet written by Allan M. Brandt and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1985 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Victorian anxieties about syphilis to the current hysteria over herpes and AIDS, the history of venereal disease in America requires us to examine social attitudes as well as purely medical concerns. This brilliant study is the first book to chronicle the range and direction of American reactions to the VD problem over the last hundred years. As the author makes clear, the medical promise of "magic bullets"--Drugs that would rid us of disease- is, in the case of VD, a promise unfulfilled. Despite dramatic advances, these diseases continue to exist in epidemic proportions. Focusing on this paradox of effective medicine and persistent disease, the author recounts the assorted medical, military, and public health responses to the problems that have arisen over the years; these have ranged from the widespread incarceration of prostitutes during World War I to the legal requirements for premarital blood tests. In the author's view, American concerns about venereal disease have been inextricably tied to a set of social and cultural values relating to sexuality, gender, ethnicity, and class. He shows how plans to combat sexually transmitted infections have typically emphasized the regulation of individual conduct. At the heart of such efforts, Brandt argues, is an ongoing tendency to see venereal disease as both a punishment for sexual misbehavior and an index of social decay. The tension between medical and moral approaches to VD has significantly impeded efforts to control these infections, for it has been too often assumed that merely controlling behavior is the answer. In tracing the social history of VD, this book offers a lucid, perceptive commentary on the relationship between medical science and cultural values, between sexuality and disease. -- from Book Jacket.

Book Clouds above the Hill

Download or read book Clouds above the Hill written by Shiba Ryōtarō and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-05 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clouds above the Hill is one of the best-selling novels ever in Japan, and is now translated into English for the first time. An epic portrait of Japan in crisis, it combines graphic military history and highly readable fiction to depict an aspiring nation modernizing at breakneck speed. Best-selling author Shiba Ryōtarō devoted an entire decade of his life to this extraordinary blockbuster, which features Japan's emerging onto the world stage by the early years of the twentieth century. In Volume II, Meiji Japan is on a collision course with Russia, as Russian troops stationed in Manchuria ignore repeated calls to withdraw. Admiral Tōgō leads a blockade and subsequent skirmish at the strategically vital and heavily fortified Port Arthur, whilst Yoshifuru’s cavalry in Manchuria maneuvers for position as it approaches the Russian Army lines. The two armies clash at the battle of Liaoyang, where Japan seals a victory which shocks the world. Anyone curious as to how the "tiny, rising nation of Japan" was able to fight so fiercely for its survival should look no further. Clouds above the Hill is an exciting, human portrait of a modernizing nation that goes to war and thereby stakes its very existence on a desperate bid for glory in East Asia.
