Book excerpt: The invariance of physical laws under the combination of exchange of particles with antiparticles (charge conjugation, C) and reversal of coordinates (parity, P) is called CP symmetry. The violation of CP symmetry was first discovered in 1964 in the neutral kaon system, and is in general one of the great puzzles of particle physics. The recent observation of CP violation in the B meson system has been a simultaneous success for model predictions and experiment. The opportunity now exists to probe details of the underlying mechanisms. This thesis presents measurements of the branching fraction and time-dependent CP-violating asymmetry in neutral B decays to J/[psi][pi]°. The decay amplitude for this channel features both tree and penguin diagram contributions, the interference of which can yield a result for the asymmetry differing from that found in the ''golden mode'' B° 2!J/[psi] K{sub s}°. Using the measured branching fraction and CP asymmetry, constraints are placed on the ratio of penguin to tree amplitudes in B° 2!J/[psi][pi]°. In addition, the impact on the CP asymmetry measurement in B° 2!J/[psi] K{sub s}° is discussed. The results are presented for ee− annihilation data collected with the BABAR detector on the [Upsilon](4S) resonance at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at SLAC. The measurement of the branching fraction, based on about 23 million B{bar B} pairs collected between October 1999 and October 2000, yields BF(B° 2!J/[psi][pi]°) = (2.0 ± 0.6 (stat) ± 0.2(syst)) x 10−5. With about 88 million B{bar B} pairs collected during the years 1999-2002, our results for the coefficients of the cosine and sine terms of the CP asymmetry are C{sub J/{psi}[pi]°} = 0.38 ± 0.41 (stat) ± 0.09 (syst) and S{sub J/{psi}[pi]°} = 0.05 ± 0.49 (stat) ± 0.16 (syst).

Book excerpt: We present a measurement of the branching fraction for the decay of the neutral B meson into the final state J/[psi][pi][sup+][pi][sup -]. The data set contains approximately 56 million B[bar B] pairs produced at the[Upsilon](4S) resonance and recorded with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e[sup+]e[sup -] storage ring. The result of this analysis is[Beta](B[sup 0][yields] J/[psi][pi][sup+][pi][sup -])= (4.6[+-] 0.7[+-] 0.6) x 10[sup -5], where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. In addition we measure[Beta](B[sup 0][yields] J?[psi][rho][sup 0])= (1.6[+-] 0.6[+-] 0.4) x 10[sup -5].

Book excerpt: The authors analyze the decay B{sup 0} {yields} K{sub S}{sup 0}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} using a sample of 232 million {Upsilon}(4S) {yields} B{bar B} decays collected with the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric-energy B factory. A maximum likelihood fit finds the following branching fractions: {Beta}(B{sup 0} {yields} K{sup 0}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}) = (43.0 {+-} 2.3 {+-} 2.3) x 10{sup -6}, {Beta}(B{sup 0} {yields} f{sub 0}({yields} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -})K{sup 0}) = (5.5 {+-} 0.7 {+-} 0.5 {+-} 0.3) x 10{sup -6} and {Beta}(B{sup 0} {yields} K*{sup +}{pi}{sup -}) = (11.0 {+-} 1.5 {+-} 0.5 {+-} 0.5) x 10{sup -6}. For these results, the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third (if present) is due to the effect of interference from other resonances. They also measure the CP-violating charge asymmetry in the decay B{sup 0} {yields} K*{sup +}{pi}{sup -}, {Alpha}{sub K*{pi}} = -0.11 {+-} 0.14 {+-} 0.05.

The B° →?°?° signal has a significance of 5.0?. We also measure?(B →?+?°) = (5.8 ± 0.6 ± 0.4) x 10−6,?(B+ → K+?°) = (12.0 ± 0.7 ± 0.6) x 10−6, and the charge asymmetries?{sub?+{pi}°} = -0.01 ± 0.10 ± 0.02 and?{sub K{sup +}{pi}°} = 0.06 ± 0.06 ± 0.01. Using isospin relations we find an upper bound on the angle difference.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Standard Model, CP violation in weak interactions involving quarks is parameterized by an irreducible complex phase in the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) quark-mixing-matrix. The precise determination of the CKM elements is a necessary ingredient for a stringent test of the Standard Model predictions, and is a crucial input for reducing the theoretical error in many New Physics searches with flavor, e.g., in the kaon sector. The unitarity of the CKM matrix is typically expressed as a triangle relationship among its parameters, where the area of the so-called Unitarity Triangle visually depicts the amount of asymmetry between the decays of B particles and their antimatter counterparts. In the past few years, the BABAR and Belle experiments have been able to measure all three angles of the triangle from CP asymmetry measurements. The first asymmetry measurements in B particle decays, about ten years ago, allowed to determine [beta], which is now known to better than 5% precision. The angles [alpha] and [gamma], measured in much rarer processes, required several years of data taking before analyses could yield reliable answers. A remarkable feature is that the direct measurement of the angles of the Unitarity Triangle generates an area that is consistent with the area predicted by measurement of the sides. In this thesis we have presented the branching fraction measurements of charged and neutral B meson decays to K1(1270)[pi] and K1(1400)[pi], obtained from a data sample of 454 million [Upsilon](4S) → B{bar B} events. This analysis is particularly challenging from the experimental side since the branching fractions involved are very low, at the level of 10−6 - 10−7, and the signal is characterized by the simultaneous presence of two overlapping resonances, which exhibit sizeable interference effects. The combined K1(1270)[pi] and K1(1400)[pi] signal is therefore modeled with a K-matrix formalism, which accounts for the effects of interference between the K1(1270) and K1(1400) mesons by introducing two effective parameters. The model is derived from the analysis, performed by the ACCMOR Collaboration, of the diffractive production of strange mesons.

This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this analysis is the simultaneous measurement of the branching fraction, the longitudinal-polarization component, and the direct-CP-violating charge asymmetry for the B --> vector-vector decay mode B[sup +] --> K*[sup 0][rho][sup +], which has previously not been seen experimentally. The measurement of the polarization of the penguin decay is of special interest. There is no tree contribution to the decay amplitude and only a very small annihilation process. The polarization of the B[sup +] --> K*[sup 0][rho][sup +] decay mode can be compared to that already measured for the similar penguin decay B --> K*[phi].

Book excerpt: The authors present measurements of branching fractions and charge asymmetries for the decays B 2![eta]K*, where K8 indicates a spin 0, 1, or 2 K [pi] system. The data sample corresponds to 344 x 106 B{bar B} pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy ee− collider at SLAC. They measure the branching fractions (in units of 10−6): [Beta](B° 2![eta]K*°(892)) = 16.5 ± 1.1 ± 0.8, [Beta](B 2![eta]K*+(892)) = 18.9 ± 1.8 ± 1.3, [Beta](B° 2![eta](K[pi])*0°) = 11.0 ± 1.6 ± 1.5, [Beta](B+ 2![eta](K[pi])0*+) = 18.2 ± 2.6 ± 2.6, [Beta](B° 2![eta]K*2°(1430)) = 9.6 ± 1.8 ± 1.1, and [Beta](B+ 2![eta]K*2+(1430)) = 9.1 ± 2.7 ± 1.4. They also determine the charge asymmetries for all decay modes.
