Book excerpt: Bramwell, "the pride of West Virginia's southern tip," sprang up almost overnight as a result of the 1800s coal-mining boom. It boasted more millionaires per capita than any other town in this country. These vintage photographs tell of devastation by the 1890 flood and the 1910 fire. In 1957, a warm January caused the Bluestone River to cover Main Street and limited transportation to rowboats. Herein, stories unfold of the early days when coal was king and cash flowed as freely as the river. A few old-timers remember watching the bank janitor as he pushed a cart full of money down Main Street to the train station every week. The bank financed Washington's Burning Tree Country Club and the University Women's Club. By the start of World War II, Bramwell's "millionaires" were the students attending Bramwell School. This volume includes photo memories showing how the school and community were joined at heart.

Book Bramwell s Golden Years

Download or read book Bramwell s Golden Years written by and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cradled quaintly in the arms of a horseshoe bend of the beautiful Bluestone River is the famous millionaires' town of Bramwell, W.Va., once recognized as having the largest number of millionaires per capita in the United States. This small town grew quickly with the discovery of the Pocahontas coal field, employing 100,000 miners in the early 1880's. Fourteen passenger trains were bound for Bramwell daily. Much like the gold rush of California, the explosion of growth from coal brought hordes of immigrants from Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Italy, Germany and England, along with miners, businessmen and entrepreneurs from within the United States. Bramwell was the hub, as it was surrounded by coalfields, extending over 40 miles. Coal became America's energy source and the Bank of Bramwell became the wealthiest bank per capita in the country. Its influence extended far beyond West Virginia with extensive financing in Washington, D.C. Today ATV enthusiasts access the Hatfield-McCoy trails via the Pocahontas Trail #10. Bramwell provides a beautiful and historic community, and with the surrounding area, offers all the amenities for families wanting to enjoy one of America's most beautiful states, Wild and Wonderful West Virginia.

Download or read book Welsh Americans written by Ronald L. Lewis and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2009-06-01 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1890, more than 100,000 Welsh-born immigrants resided in the United States. A majority of them were skilled laborers from the coal mines of Wales who had been recruited by American mining companies. Readily accepted by American society, Welsh immigrants experienced a unique process of acculturation. In the first history of this exceptional community, Ronald Lewis explores how Welsh immigrants made a significant contribution to the development of the American coal industry and how their rapid and successful assimilation affected Welsh American culture. Lewis describes how Welsh immigrants brought their national churches, fraternal orders and societies, love of literature and music, and, most important, their own language. Yet unlike eastern and southern Europeans and the Irish, the Welsh--even with their "foreign" ways--encountered no apparent hostility from the Americans. Often within a single generation, Welsh cultural institutions would begin to fade and a new "Welsh American" identity developed. True to the perspective of the Welsh themselves, Lewis's analysis adopts a transnational view of immigration, examining the maintenance of Welsh coal-mining culture in the United States and in Wales. By focusing on Welsh coal miners, Welsh Americans illuminates how Americanization occurred among a distinct group of skilled immigrants and demonstrates the diversity of the labor migrations to a rapidly industrializing America.

Book U S Steel and Gary West Virginia

Download or read book U S Steel and Gary West Virginia written by Ronald G. Garay and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 2011-02-28 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This book is well written and meticulously documented; it will add significantly to the available literature on West Virginia’s industrial and community history. It should find a receptive audience among college and post- graduate scholars of industrial and labor history, West Virginia history, and Appalachian studies.” —John Lilly, editor, Goldenseal The company owned the houses. It owned the stores. It provided medical and governmental services. It provided practically all the jobs. Gary, West Virginia, a coal mining town in the southern part of the state, was a creation of U.S. Steel. And while the workers were not formally bound to the company, their fortunes—like that of their community—were inextricably tied to the success of U.S. Steel. Gary developed in the early twentieth century as U.S. Steel sought a new supply of raw material for its industrial operations. The rich Pocahontas coal field in remote southern West Virginia provided the carbon-rich, low-sulfur coal the company required. To house the thousands of workers it would import to mine that coal bed, U.S. Steel carved a town out of the mountain wilderness. The company was the sole reason for its existence. In this fascinating book, Ronald Garay tells the story of how industry-altering decisions made by U.S. Steel executives reverberated in the hollows of Appalachia. From the area’s industrial revolution in the early twentieth century to the peak of steel-making activity in the 1940s to the industry’s decline in the 1970s, U.S. Steel and Gary, West Virginia offers an illuminating example of how coal and steel paternalism shaped the eastern mountain region and the limited ways communities and their economies evolve. In telling the story of Gary, this volume freshly illuminates the stories of other mining towns throughout Appalachia. At once a work of passionate journalism and a cogent analysis of economic development in Appalachia, this work is a significant contribution to the scholarship on U.S. business history, labor history, and Appalachian studies. Ronald Garay, a professor emeritus of mass communication at Louisiana State University, is the author of Gordon McLendon: The Maverick of Radio and The Manship School: A History of Journalism Education at LSU.
