Book The Gamer s Brain

    Book Details:
  • Author : Celia Hodent
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2017-08-10
  • ISBN : 1498775527
  • Pages : 267 pages

Download or read book The Gamer s Brain written by Celia Hodent and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-08-10 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making a successful video game is hard. Even games that are well-received at launch may fail to engage players in the long term due to issues with the user experience (UX) that they are delivering. That’s why makers of successful video games like Fortnite and Assassin’s Creed invest both time and money perfecting their UX strategy. These top video game creators know that a bad user experience can ruin the prospects for any game, regardless of its budget, scope, or ambition. The game UX accounts for the whole experience players have with a video game, from first hearing about it to navigating menus and progressing in the game. UX as a discipline offers guidelines to assist developers in creating the optimal experience they want to deliver, including shipping higher quality games (whether indie, triple-A or "serious" games) and meeting business goals -- all while staying true to design vision and artistic intent. At its core, UX is about understanding the gamer’s brain: understanding human capabilities and limitations to anticipate how a game will be perceived, the emotions it will elicit, how players will interact with it, and how engaging the experience will be. This book is designed to equip readers of all levels, from student to professional, with cognitive science knowledge and user experience guidelines and methodologies. These insights will help readers identify the ingredients for successful and engaging video games, empowering them to develop their own unique game recipe more efficiently, while providing a better experience for their audience. "The Gamer's Brain: How Neuroscience and UX Can Impact Video Game Design" Is written by Celia Hodent -- a UX expert with a PhD in psychology who has been working in the entertainment industry for over 10 years, including at prominent companies such as Epic Games (Fortnite), Ubisoft, and LucasArts. Major themes explored in this book: Provides an overview of how the brain learns and processes information by distilling research findings from cognitive science and psychology research in a very accessible way. Topics covered include: "neuromyths", perception, memory, attention, motivation, emotion, and learning. Includes numerous examples from released games of how scientific knowledge translates into game design, and how to use a UX framework in game development. Describes how UX can guide developers to improve the usability and the level of engagement a game provides to its target audience by using cognitive psychology knowledge, implementing human-computer interaction principles, and applying the scientific method (user research). Provides a practical definition of UX specifically applied to games, with a unique framework. Defines the most relevant pillars for good usability (ease of use) and good "engage-ability" (the ability of the game to be fun and engaging), translated into a practical checklist. Covers design thinking, game user research, game analytics, and UX strategy at both a project and studio level. This book is a practical tool that any professional game developer or student can use right away and includes the most complete overview of UX in games existing today.

Book From Computer to Brain

    Book Details:
  • Author : William W. Lytton
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2007-05-08
  • ISBN : 0387227334
  • Pages : 369 pages

Download or read book From Computer to Brain written by William W. Lytton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biology undergraduates, medical students and life-science graduate students often have limited mathematical skills. Similarly, physics, math and engineering students have little patience for the detailed facts that make up much of biological knowledge. Teaching computational neuroscience as an integrated discipline requires that both groups be brought forward onto common ground. This book does this by making ancillary material available in an appendix and providing basic explanations without becoming bogged down in unnecessary details. The book will be suitable for undergraduates and beginning graduate students taking a computational neuroscience course and also to anyone with an interest in the uses of the computer in modeling the nervous system.

Book Projective Processes and Neuroscience in Art and Design

Download or read book Projective Processes and Neuroscience in Art and Design written by Zuanon, Rachel and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2016-07-13 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent advances in neuroscience suggest that the human brain is particularly well-suited to design things: concepts, tools, languages and places. Current research even indicates that the human brain may indeed have evolved to be creative, to imagine new ideas, to put them into practice, and to critically analyze their results. Projective Processes and Neuroscience in Art and Design provides a forum for discussion relating to the intersection of projective processes and cognitive neuroscience. This innovative publication offers a neuroscientific perspective on the roles and responsibilities of designers, artists, and architects, with relation to the products they design. Expanding on current research in the areas of sensor-perception, cognition, creativity, and behavioral processes, this publication is designed for use by researchers, professionals, and graduate-level students working and studying the fields of design, art, architecture, neuroscience, and computer science.

Book Targeting the Broadly Pathogenic Kynurenine Pathway

Download or read book Targeting the Broadly Pathogenic Kynurenine Pathway written by Sandeep Mittal and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-11-18 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tryptophan metabolism via kynurenine pathway plays a critical role in both health and a variety of human diseases. This book highlights the known associations between kynurenine pathway and various disease states, as well as examines the current status of drug development and clinical trials of compounds known to alter tryptophan metabolism. The research plays a critical role in molecular targeted therapies directed at altering the kynurenine pathway of tryptophan metabolism. The initial and rate-limiting step of tryptophan metabolism is mediated by one of two enzymes, tryptophan-2,3-dioxygenase (TDO; predominantly in the liver, but also in the brain) and indoleamine-2,3-dioxygenase (IDO; in a host of tissues in response to immune activation). Targeting the enzymes IDO and TDO, as well as other downstream effectors would therefore be likely to generate novel treatment options that would be helpful in a wide variety of clinical settings. This book provides a unique bridge between basic mechanistic understanding of the role of the kynurenine pathway with translational applications and clinical relevance. It will explore the indications that tryptophan metabolism is a potential biomarker of disease activity, can contribute to local and possibly systemic immune suppression in cancer, and is an attractive target for which a variety of inhibitors are readily available.
