Book Risk Analysis and Decision Processes

Download or read book Risk Analysis and Decision Processes written by H.C. Kunreuther and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For old and new studies in decision making and risk analysis, this book should stand at tlle watershed. Studies of conflict resolution and public policy will surely now have to take account of the model investigation provided by the IIASA team, and many things will not be the same again. This is a report of inquiries into the siting of liquefied energy gas (LEG) facilities in the Federal Republic of Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The risks of transporting this highly combustible stuff, and the economic benefits of being able to bring a natural energy source from one side of the globe to the other, holding it, and piping it out as needed, make LEG a model case for studying the public response to dangerous technology. The dangers of LEG are differ ent from those of nuclear power, for instance, where the response too often becomes entangled with the fear of nuclear war. The dangers of LEG include unco~trollable explosions, rather than insidious contami nation. But the degree of dangerousness is very much of the same order as that of nuclear power, and is at least as difficult to assess. In four different countries the constitutional procedures involved in obtaining approval of nuclear or LEG facilities are on record. The four case histories here are a model for comparative study of conflict resolu tion. The period over which the negotiations developed is much the same.

Book East Coast of Scotland

Download or read book East Coast of Scotland written by Andy Carnduff and published by Imray, Laurie, Norie and Wilson Ltd. This book was released on 2023-05-30 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This relatively remote cruising area at the edge of the North Sea has much to offer small and shoal-draught boats that will take the ground, but skippers of larger, deeper keeled yachts will also find a good selection of harbours and anchorages to choose from, particularly during settled conditions or in periods of offshore winds. Ashore, there is a long and rich history of Scottish culture and innovation to discover, as well as superlative landscapes to explore. Popular as a landfall destination for yachts sailing across the North Sea from the approaches to the Baltic, the east coast of Scotland is well worth exploring as part of any circumnavigation of Great Britain. This new Imray title benefits from the extensive local knowledge of Andy Carnduff and the members of the Forth Yacht Clubs Association, and incorporates Martin Lawrence’s earlier work. Sailing directions and pilotage details are accompanied by listings of harbours and anchorages, including facilities. The book is illustrated throughout with Imray cartography and a good selection of informative photographs, including several aerials shots.

Book Norie s Nautical Tables

Download or read book Norie s Nautical Tables written by George Blance and published by Imray, Laurie, Norie and Wilson Ltd. This book was released on 2022-07-19 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Norie’s Nautical Tables is the essential requirement for anyone learning and practicing astronavigation. Since J W Norie published the first edition of his Complete Set of Nautical Tables and Epitome of Practical Navigation in 1803, many changes to the tables have been necessary in both content and presentation. New tables have been included, obsolete ones deleted to conform with changing techniques of navigation, with the aim of improving the accuracy of the calculated position and reducing the tedium of the calculation. Since the commissioning of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), its proven accuracy and reliability in all weather conditions have resulted in confidence and almost unquestioning dependence on its ability to provide a vessel’s position, course and speed. Its use is widespread but the marine environment is a hostile one and failure of electronic equipment or of the system itself is a possibility. No prudent seafarer would proceed on an ocean passage without a reliable navigational back-up. The Explanation is in the form of a detailed step-by-step description, by means of worked examples, of the different methods of performing navigational calculations using a scientific calculator and/or the tables. A number of esteemed editors have worked on Nories’ Nautical Tables over the years and this edition includes new contributions from François Hugo. This edition now presents formulae in an appropriate format for direct entry to a scientific calculator. Because the possibility of navigation without even an appropriate calculator exists, the logarithms have been retained. • All the tables required for coastal and deep sea navigation are included • A simple uniform method of interpolation for all the trigonometrical tables is used • Certain tables and data are also included which are not readily available on board ship or are only used in the examination room.

Book Birds in North East Scotland Then and Now

Download or read book Birds in North East Scotland Then and Now written by Adam Watson and published by Paragon Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Field observations mainly in the 1940s and comparison with recent records. Adam Watson as a schoolboy made field observations on birds in north-east Scotland during the 1940s and early 1950s. These are of special interest because hardly any local ornithologists lived there, and his main set of observations is published here for the first time. As well as accounts for all species seen, there is detailed information on several species whose status has changed greatly since: declines of breeding greenshanks and ring ouzels, and rapid increases in the proportions of feral doves and carrion crows. These and other observations form a useful baseline for comparison with what is now being seen and recorded by hundreds of ornithologists living in and visiting the area. Ian Francis came to north-east Scotland in the early 1990s and has taken part in many aspects of local ornithology. He was first editor of a major book: The Breeding Birds of North-East Scotland, published in 2011, which documents the current breeding distributions of birds and assesses changes over 40 years, allowing a modern perspective on Adam Watson's observations from the mid-1900s. The current book by Adam Watson and Ian Francis, Birds in north-east Scotland then and now, also includes a previously unpublished account of long-term research by Adam Watson, Rik Smith and Mick Marquiss on summering snow buntings, one of the UK's rarest regularly breeding birds.
